Nintendo's self parody in Wind Waker?
After playing Wind Waker again I noticed something funny (hope this wasn't brought up before). The guy at the Nintendo gallery says, when you visit it the first time, something like:
"We have less visitors here because we don't have a lot of the new gimmical features, but true fans know that we are the coolest" After thinking about this sentence for a while I now think that this is a little metaphoric hint at Nintendo's situation today, but I may completely wrong. At least it was a good laugh... what do you think? |

Yeah, I love that. I wouldn't say it's Nintendo making fun of itself though... rather, Nintendo jabbing at it's competitors.

Re: Nintendo's self parody in Wind Waker?
Not to mention Nintendo is probably making fun of video game fans that are taken so easily with gimmicks. Sure, Nintendo doesn't use an online network so people can play endless deathmatches in flashy First Person Shooters that all play the same. Nintendo has what I truly want: innovative gaming experiences and take more than a rental to fully complete. Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, Super Smash Brothers Melee, and Metroid Prime are the four out of five games that I felt were worthy for ownership, and I was correct.
You know what proves that video gamers today do not appreciate greatness? Check out the GameFAQ Metroid Prime reviews with low scores. These people wanted another lame-ass First Person Shooter, and got an excellent adventure game instead. These people whined that there was no dual analog control scheme like in all their other crappy shooters, even though it takes a really long time for a new gamer to learn dual analog. The "simple to learn, tough to master" ideology behind Metroid Prime made it so awesome because I still found the combat hard without it being control related, yet most people were just looking for more of the same. Kudos, Nintendo!

Re: Nintendo's self parody in Wind Waker?
It seems as though Nintendo is doing both things:poking fun at itself and just adding something in there to see how smart there players are to see who can figure it out. About the whole making fun of itself thing, its always good to laugh at yourself in hard times.

Re: Nintendo's self parody in Wind Waker?
It was a funny little comment they put in when I first found the place.
And to be perfectly honest, they are right. Though I think X-Box is really a legit system (they have some pretty good games coming out, and Microsoft DID make some pretty good games in the past), the PS2 is... well... a piece of garbage, but that's just me. I mean, think about it. If you want more PC-type games you'd get an X-Box. If you want more innovative games, you'd get a Gamecube. If you want just a lot of games and don't care about quality, or you just want a bunch of crappy FF games, you'd get a PS2. Both Gamecube and X-Box have some really good flagship games, and the exception is PS2. But it's still the "best system" out there admist it's tons of technical and gaming problems (even though it has the most games, it also has a VERY FEW even decent games on its own, most of the stuff being ported better on GC or X-Box anyway, the thing breaks down easier than a rusty tricycle, and it's still more than $150, and why on earth would anyone pay $100 for FF11?). The answer, sadly, is that people will go for stupid little gimmicks. People buy name brand stuff, granted Zelda is one such franchise. HOWEVER, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that basically every Zelda game that has come out by Nintendo has been at LEAST very good. Even if you don't like some of the games, quality-wise people should admit the polish put down on these games (i.e. you might not LIKE WW, but you SHOULD acknowledge that it's a pretty dang well-done game). On the other hand, look at the popular games for the PS2. Metal Gear Solid 2 had basically such little playing time that it's basically counted as a movie rather than a game in itself. The last 4 or 5 FF's have been FAR less than stellar, with the Square sequels of several of it's older SNES titles being forgotten on the wayside. Games like Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City, and even MGS2, have moved onto X-Box and PC ports. The hardware itself is a piece of crap; all of the PS2's I know of are starting to break down or are broken down. I've heard of one, ONE, GC breaking down, and that's after 2 years of intense Smash Bros. playing (intense as in basically 2 years straight, 4 hours a day at LEAST of Smash playing). I really don't know why the PS2 is the most popular system, but basically the only thing I can see is the gimmickery. The idea of "more mature" supposedly is supposed to make a game better (yeah, right, since when?), and anything with a long story is considered a good story (FFVII has a crappy story that many consider even good, and honestly it has a REALLY BAD story, no matter how much you like it). We can sorta see this though through the PC gaming world, in which even with nice graphics, people will be willing to buy a good game over anything else. Why do you think the FF ports do so poorly on PC? Even FF11 I think hasn't had very good reviews from most people I've talked to who have played other MMORPG's like Everquest, and most people that seem to even enjoy the game remotely are those who love the FF series. Let's be honest, people have been buying and liking crap. Maybe GC isn't your cup of tea, but honestly it's sure a lot better than the PS2. |

Re: Nintendo's self parody in Wind Waker?
I think that it is nintendo getting a good laugh at their selves. It may be far away from the other people, but didn't they say that they used to be really popular, but they have died out. If they did say that, then it would sum up nintendos life in a couple of sentences. Nintendo used to be the best gaming syatem out there. When new compaines started coming out, and gave out their crappy action games that you could beat in a couple of days, people couldn't appreciate the classics. People got lazy, and didn't want to think, so gaming compaines, make it easy on them by giving them easy shooting games. They're easy for me anyway.

Re: Nintendo's self parody in Wind Waker?
Yes, I noticed that. ^^ Pokin` fun at themselves. But I am one of those "true fans" who knows Nintendo is the best. I'd never pick up a game system made by another company.
Or maybe their poking fun at the people who don't play Nintendo. Perhaps their saying that those non-true fans don't know what's good in a game. Hmm... |
