Re: what order to play?

For storyline I recommend getting OoT first. It comes on this collectors edition thing for the gamecube. That comes with the original, adventure of Link, Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask. I'd get that. Play OoT first. Then play MM. Then get Wind waker. Then the rest is your choice really.

And remember, you can always play GameCube games on the Wii, in case you didn't know.
But yeah, get the Collectors Edition, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess if you are looking for story.
Get the oldies for gameplay.

Re: what order to play?

Well first of all, let me explain to you.

OoT is the greatest game ever created. However to appreciate it properly you need to have played it back in the day it was made... which is like a decade ago almost? But yeah start with OoT.. if you can.

If you can't get a hold of a N64 and OoT, then you'll have to somehow find the GC collectors edition or you'll have to hook your Wii up to the internet and download it for Wii. Otherwise if you can't do any of those options, you could look at ROMs/emulation on your PC.

Majora's Mask should be second as its the direct sequel to OoT. Be warned though, it might not be for you. Some people can barely get through it and some people love it more than any other Zelda... its the strange nature of the game.

If you cant get your hands on the N64 Zeldas and just want to get right into it, buy The Wind Waker for GC (which works on your Wii), complete that and then buy Twilight Princess for Wii and complete that. That should get you hooked onto the series. Thats all you really need to play though. You've got some of the GB, NES and SNES games to look at too. But the really important ones are the ones I've already mentioned. ALttP is also worth a try after you've finished the other four.

Re: what order to play?

I think the best game to begin with is Wind Waker. When my first Zelda game would have been OoT then i would not be a fan because OoT, my second game, gave me a really hard time.

I suggest playing OOT before playing MM, WW, or TP, or else you will be missing a few plot elements (especially in MM). With the other games it really doen't matter what order you play them in.

Ocarina Of Time should be played first. And that's not a biased opinion. It's just an opinion. It is the most original 3D Zelda game, and so that's why I think it's good for the first Zelda game to play.

Majora's Mask is the follow-up of Ocarina Of Time, and so that could come next, then Wind Waker or Twilight Princess. Either would be fine. Phantom Hourglass be sure to play AFTER Wind Waker.

After you play most of those, be sure to play the oldies. (The 2D games.)

However, if you're just wondering what to play first, so you understand the story, then no, there really isn't one you should start with. You will see what I mean when you start playing them. Zelda isn't like The Lord Of The Rings, and so the story is pretty scattered. There is a supposed timeline/storyline, but it's very tedious and not even important, in my opinion. It's all about the experience, so play at will. However, there are follow-ups, such as Ocarina Of Time and then Majora's Mask, but it's hardly to be considered a sequel, because Majora's Mask, like every other Zelda follow-up, has it's own COMPLETELY DIFFERENT story.

I still recommend playing them in THIS order:

1. Ocarina Of Time

2. Majora's Mask

3. Twilight Princess

After that, just pick any game you like.

No, actually its a 3D version of Alttp with time travel. The most orginal 3D slot is a tie between WW and MM.

By the way, I suggest playing the 2Ds first. I had already spent my life playing 3D zeldas, and when I started the 2Ds I found them to just not be as fun of an expirience. Its like going back to CDs after having an Ipod. If you play the 2Ds before the 3Ds, then you will enjoy them more than you would vise versa.

Maybe original wasn't the word I was looking for. Perhaps... Basic, is what I meant. Ocarina Of Time is your basic Zelda kinda game. Others, such as WW, MM, TP, and so on, do not give you the same Zelda feel,as that of the original ones, such as ALttP.

I'm pretty sure that this person is not looking to play the 2D games, as for he was originally searching to play the more modern ones of which that has made the Zelda world quite phenomenal. Though, I love the 2D Zelda games, they're rarely enjoyed today by your average gamer unless they played them in the past. Sure, there are many gamers that have played the 2D games, but I'm referring to the ones that have never ever played any Zelda game in their life, but are still considered a, "gamer". So if that's the case, I'm pretty sure they will go for the 3D Zelda games first. Only when they become a fan of the franchise, might they check out the 2D games.
