No magic meter :(
Was anyone disappointed in the absence of the magic meter in Twilight Princess? I know it was originally going to be in the game but it had been removed. I've thought about the reasons for this.
1. All the other meters used in the game. Like the lantern meter and the air meter for when Link is underwater without the Zora tunic. Maybe there wasn't enough room on the screen for all those meters. It might've just looked too busy and distracting. 2. Lack of magical items perhaps. While some believe that fire arrows were going to be apart of his arsenal of weapons, it was removed too. My guess was, you would combine the lantern with the arrows like you would with bombs or the hawk's eye. But I have no idea what you'd combine for ice arrows. Which might've possibly left only the dominion rod. That's the only real magical item that Link actually uses. Unless the lamp was originally going to be powered by magic like in A Link to the Past. So that, plus fire arrows, plus dominion rod, plus (possibly) great spin attack, much later in the game, might've combined all the possible magical weapons Link would have used in the game. Which leads us to... 3. Not enough room in his inventory for more magical weapons to make up for lack of magical weapons, thus over-complicating the game. So I imagined that the staff got together and asked themselves, "What are we going to do about this? Link doesn't have room for a magic meter and doesn't own enough magical weapons to make it useful. We should just lose it, I guess." It makes sense when you think about it. But to me, Link just isn't Link without his magic meter. And he's a Hylian, and all Hylians are embued with magical abilities. Therefore, I was disappointed and looked at the screenshot behind the wii game box with a bit of longing over what might've been. |

Re: No magic meter :(
I don't don't mind having to keep up the magic meter. It might've been a way to allow Twilight Princess to be more of a challenge. The attack boost from fairies tears and rare chu jelly doesn't seem worth the trouble you go through to get it. And I don't know if I like red potion only filling Link up part of the way. That's never how red potion has been. hahaha

Re: No magic meter :(
I was disappointed by it, especially because red potions become utterly useless later in the game because of the existence of the blue potions as healing items only and the fact that the red potions only heal 8 hearts.
If they kept the red potions as full heal items and included the magic meter, blue potion could serve to refill both your hearts AND the magic meter, just like in ALTTP. It also would have made a lot more sense for the Great Spin, Jump Strike, Magic Armor, and Wolf sense to have used up magic instead of rupees or nothing at all.

Re: No magic meter :(
I didn't mind the absence of it, since it was my first Zelda game, and I really didn't know much about it other than what I've seen of it. But, now having played passed games, I think it was a nice change up.

Re: No magic meter :(
Yeah, funny thing is that I didn't notice there wasn't a magic meter until AFTER I beat the game. And then I was confused because on the back of the boxart it shows a green meter underneath Link's health...
Really Nintendo? They probably cut it out not even a month before release.

Re: No magic meter :(
I never even noticed that there wasn't a magic meter until after I beat the game. Truth is, the magic meter is of no relevance to me. In the games that have them, I never run out of it so I almost forget that its even there. So, naturally, it didn't bother me that it wasn't in TP.

Re: No magic meter :(
Exactly. There was no need for the items to have a meter in TP. In fact, there is no need to have a magic meter in any Zelda game, becasue it hardly affects the gameplay besides having to break pots once in a while.

Re: No magic meter :(
...The past seven Zelda games didn't have a magic meter. The majority of Zelda games don't have magic meters.
It started in AoL anyways, which is a game that held the magic as more important or equal to Link's health meter. It was such a pain in the butt, sometimes I had to kill Link just so I could get new magic with my next life.

Re: No magic meter :(
With items like the Bomb Arrows, something by and large more useful than all but WW's Light Arrows, I really didn't miss it. That, and the sheer majority of the skills you get for swordsmanship kind of got rid of the need for one. That's probably one of the reasons they dropped it.

Re: No magic meter :(
...But I played FS after TWW.
![]() I was under the impression that TP's magic meter was going to be used for hidden skills, but then they didn't see the point.
