Lyrical music

Koji Kondo said back in 2005 that he wondered how Zelda fans would react to a lyrical Zelda song. (Specifically Zelda's Lullaby) I think that would be awesome. I know voice acting is one thing, but lyrical music is whole other...are fans too conservative to hear a single song that has actual words and meanings? To me, it doesn't matter what language it's spoken in, but good vocals are good vocals...and I think that'd be cool and unique to the series.

Came across this, and I really liked it...though I have no clue what language this is. It's Forest Temple remix called Ocarina of Time Prayer.

Re: Lyrical music

One thing I've learned over time: never doubt the Koji. Never, EVER, doubt the Koji.

The series needs some change here and there, I would be up for some lyrical music to see how it goes, could be interesting if they ever decide to make music one of the big themes again.

Re: Lyrical music

In TP, the Hyrule Field at Night music has the sound of what is believed to be Malon's voice singing. So, lyrical music with actual words rather than sounds would be good, but I just thought you would want to know that TP did have that (if you didn't know already).

Re: Lyrical music

I would certainly be curious to see it.

I imagine Zelda's Lullaby would sound like something Scandinavian.

Personally I would like to see a version of Ganondorf's theme with some ominous Gerudo chanting.

Well, whatever Koji does, it's good.

Re: Lyrical music

That piece is in Japanese, created by Jillian Goldin. She's actually veeeeeeeeery talented (also did a GREAT version of One Winged Angel) at singing AND composition.

In any case, I do so wish that a couple of lyrical tracks would be added to the games. Anybody hear the vocal version of Epona's Song? Very pretty piece. I'd love to hear something like Ballad of the Windfish with vocals, even if they hadn't any lyrics. But still... I'm sure that a song with lyrics could do some good to the series, especially if it's a song that is of great importance to the story.

Re: Lyrical music

I think it'd be pretty sweet, but I couldn't stand to listen to a song in English for some reason... I feel it would come off very cheesey. And really, any other language wouldn't make any other sense, unless languages were made up for the different races, you know? A song with Latin or Italian vocals wouldn't make any sense in a Zelda world... but "live" vocals would be cool, very powerful

Re: Lyrical music

Latin and Italian would make sense, as we have some precedent for it, with the Gregorian-esque chanting in the Temple of Time. Or at the very least, use Latin as inspiration.

Re: Lyrical music

I would have a hard time listening to a song in "Midna gibberish". However, I wouldn't mind a song with.. singing.

Phantom_exe makes sense with Latin but it wouldn't bother me if they used other languages such as English, Japanese or Esperanto.

Re: Lyrical music

I like the chanting style songs (Temple of Time) or those that seem to be sung (TP's Hyrule Field at Night), but I think lyrics would take away from the mystical ambience that many of Koji Kondo's pieces seem to have. Though his songs are incredible and often are the highlights of certain areas in the game, they're ultimately supposed to be background music. I'm not saying that lyrics would be bad, I'm just saying it would overcomplicate things. I can also imagine them being overly corny like those dubs you see on Youtube.

Re: Lyrical music

I think lyrical music could sound good if they did it right (and you know Koji would do it right). I'm not sure about English, but SSBB has proven that Latin video game lyrics sound cool.

Re: Lyrical music

Really, Mouse? Smash proved it? Not, you know, Final Fantasy VII? Whatever. Lyrical music used in the right story-related spots could be really cool, but too much of it would just be annoying.

The problem with lyrical music in video games is usually that video game music needs to loop and looped lyrics tend to be grating. But if it's used at times where we aren't likely to hear it loop a billion times it should be okay.

Re: Lyrical music

I would love some lyrical music. :3

As long as the voices in the songs are good, I'll be happy.

Re: Lyrical music

xD When I say lyrical music I would assume it wouldn't loop...I could see it more as a credit song or an intro song...Or they could have a character like Marin who sang ballads...Ballads are suppose to have words.

Re: Lyrical music

Absolutely. Imagine the cinematic appeal that would add to the game, having a lyrical song thrown in--yes.

And really, I wouldn't mind even any genre--just as long as it isn't any sort of Country/Bluegrass.

Now that I think about it...Zelda with Hip Hop? Haha! Could be interesting. Like that one Samurai Champloo show did (and it worked, I think).

Re: Lyrical music

...Geez. Country music has been in Zelda since Ocarina of Time. Wouldn't you say Lon Lon Ranch has country music? xD

More genres would be sweet. I myself love every type and form of music. Sometimes I wonder how a hardcore metal rock song would feel in the Zelda universe. Some of them remixes are awesome. =D and this...

Or...Baroque Metal Rock. That would be great. But I think if they were to add any sort of metal/hardcore rock, lyrics might ruin it. Can you imagine some intensely epic scene with Link doing some random epic thing, and then M Shadows (pre-singing era) starts screaming his lounges (sp?) off in the background? Haha, that might not work out so well. But I'm pretty open to just about everything, so you never know.

EDIT: And I just remembered one hip hop song done to the background of the Fairy Fountain/save song, called "Save Me". Forgot the artist, though...
Pretty good stuff.

Re: Lyrical music

It all depends on the context.

Since Hyrule is such a diverse and bizarre world a lot of different types of music (with lyrics) would be perfectly acceptable if in the right place.

E.g. loud Rock and Roll music with lyrics in Hyrule Castle would be out of place, but among the Zoras (with their rock bands and guitars), it would be fine.
