Link needs a pet, not a sidekick.

That is because cats are useless.

They say they want every Zelda to be unique. Now we have had, magic masks, magic instrument, magic wands, medallions, mirrors, stones, beans... But never magic pets. The reason might be that Pokémon was first though.

That's a good point a magic pet would be useful.

I've played Fable II and I really did feel attached to my dog. But how would the dog - or whatever pet Link would have - help him in the game? The purpose of Navi, Midna, et cetera, when you come right down to it, is to let Link know how to defeat enemies, where to go, and things like that. In Fable II Theresa (an old and apparently magical human woman ) tells you where to go and what to do, not your dog. Still, it would be nice for Nintendo to mix it up a bit with a new, unique sidekick and/or pet.

If Link does get a pet, then I think it should either be a large dog or a dragon no bigger than a horse.

From all the suggestions I've heard, I'm liking the sound of a hawk. TP's hawk was pretty cool on the two occasions we got to use it.

I remember before we knew a lot about Twilight Princess, some people thought that the Boar seen in the trailers was a transformed form of Epona. That would be a cool idea; a pet that changed into different animals, and you could use it in different forms for different puzzles.

I like the Kaepora Gaebora idea, although he'd be more of a companion than a pet, since he's so intelligent, especially in OoT, when he's actually Rauru.

There is not one shred of evidence to support that. There's no reason to suspect that Kaepora Gaebora is anybody other than Kaepora Gaebora.

Actually, there is a shred or two of evidence, but it's definitely not confirmed.

Though kaebora gaebora is still wise, whether he's Rauru or not.

One of the truth stones in OoT says that he might be Rauru, and, although this is just my opinion, I don't think they'd put it in the game if wasn't true.

It says he's the reincarnation of an ancient sage. Not specifically Rauru.

Reincarnation. This means that whoever it was before is dead now.
Having seen no sages before Kaepora Gaebora, we can safely assume that this sage is not part of the game. And, furthermore, the game was written as the first chronologically so it's nobody we've ever seen before, either.
