I want someone to die.
Seriously, I think having a main character die would be a way for Nintendo to prove to fans that they would do whatever it takes to tell a great story. There has been death in Zelda, however the only death that I think affected players was probably the death of the King of Hyrule in WW. Of course there are deaths of characters in MM, however we only actually see one (Miaku), the others happened before hand or are implied (Darmani and the Deku Butler's son).
Ganondorf has died... or been petrified... or sealed away or whatever but the villain should always be defeated. I'm not sadistic in wanting a character to die, I just want the story to be strong enough that if a character died I would actually care. As a matter of fact I want to care so much that on a second playthrough I'd try to prevent said death. Well anyway, that's what I hope for in a future Zelda game. Whether it be Spirit Tracks, Zelda Wii or The Legend of Zelda: Forgotten Waffle King. Thoughts?

Re: I want someone to die.
It's probably not gonna happen. Miyamoto's policy is to treat storylines as just one of many equal (or even less than equal) elements of a game. Not to mention, Link is supposed to be representative of the player, so I doubt Miyamoto will let him die.
Maybe Zelda...or Tingle ![]()

Re: I want someone to die.
Just go play MM and let the moon fall.
Though, if you're not talking about wiping out an entire town, you could settle for shooting Sakon, damned theif.

Re: I want someone to die.
Well MM seemed to be the game that had the most death... Butlers son, Deku scrub that Skull Kid kills, Mikau, the goron... except you don't see them get killed but you do see Mikau die. In TP there was Rutela who died, but you don't see her execution. So at least death itself = isn't absent from Zelda games thankfully. But yes I would like to see a main character die... More emotion please. Actually imagine if Ganondorf had killed Midna at the end of TP... that would have made me literally cry and I actually did feel like crying already.
I think Nintendo should grow up when it comes to the console Zeldas. Why? Because their fanbase has grown up. They can support the little 8 year olds with the handheld Zeldas... all the kids seem to play handhelds anyway. Well most of them...

Re: I want someone to die.
Dude, death is all over the Zelda games... there were several deaths that to me were sad...
For example, the sage in the sanctuary in ALttP, complete with sad music and everything, had me shedding a tear. It was sad when the Deku Tree of OoT died... I actually felt sorry for Ganondorf in TWW... hundreds of years of trying to get the triforce and then just as he's about to touch it, some mysterious quasi-ghost who should be dead by that time appears out of nowhere and makes a stupid wish... and then to top it off, he gets stabbed in the head with a sword and dies. And like it was already mentioned, the moon in MM, was sad and a bit scary... What I propose is a better cutscene in case the player dies... perhaps showing Link, Zelda or the King's execution at the hands of his enemy... |

Re: I want someone to die.
I think Saria, Darunia, and the other sages you meet in OoT die before they are awakened. Midna likely dies in TP, though she's brought back to life. As has been stated, there's also the GDT and the guy in ALttP who couldn't protect Zelda.

Re: I want someone to die.
Don't forget the Guard in OOT, the poor fellow found in the back alley after Zelda's flight from Hyrule Castle.

Re: I want someone to die.
Well...Link's Uncle, the Santuary priest, everyone in Koholint (and Marin if you didn't get the good ending >_< ), the Great Deku Tree, The back alley guard, The little girl in yellow, Richard the dog, The lady in the blue dress, The lady who's back itches, the old lady in the market, Dampe, The cucco lady's brother, all the rest of Hyrule's guards, all the other dogs, The Butler's son, Darmani, Mikua, the King of Hyrule, the four Knights of Hyrule, The little girl in the Graveyard/swamp (creepy), All the people who got lost and died in the Temple of Darkness, Rutela, The water sage, Zant, a LOT of castle soldiers, all the people who went to the Temple of the Ocean King, Astrid's friend...and more have all been killed during a Zelda game...xD
Optional ones: Link, Zelda, Ilia (yeah, I killed her), Ralis, Telma, Sakon and everyone in Termina...um. Yeah. Strangely enough the more light-hearted Zelda games are the ones with tons of dead people...(FSA and PH) I could definitely see an important character die in the next Zelda. I always fear for Link's partner...since they always "seperate" at the end of each game, whether by dying or leaving.

Revived at the ending. Not sure about the priest, but the uncle is.

As for characters dying, it should only happen if it tells a lesson or helps another character grow in some way. Majora's Mask did this very well. Termina was filled with death, but it never felt melodramatic, nor did it feel like it was the developers were trying to make everything more mature. The deaths in Majora's Mask tie deeply into the story that the game revolves around. Healing the dead so they can rest in peace--that made for some very powerful scenes.

Re: I want someone to die.
I think the reason ZeldaBlue had Link be optionally dead is when you get the Gem Over screen. Of course, he always comes back.

Link shouldn't die, since he is supposed to be you. He can die a horrible death at the game over screen when you lose all your hearts though.

Re: I want someone to die.
I think a main character should die and not come back, it doesn't really matter who. This is important because it would make the endings less predictable. I think one of the Zelda games should have an ending where Link either loses or doesn't win the way he wanted to. As a comparison, the movie "the Empire Strikes Back" is supposed to be the best movie of the Star Wars franchise, because you can't just have every element in a series have a happy ending, it gets old fast.

Re: I want someone to die.
Well, that's because at the end of the game Link wishes on the Triforce...and I doubt he wished for a gameboy or something stupid. xD I assume he wished for things to be right again...meaning that his uncle, the priest dude and the flute boy live again...(And the King?) Just because they're alive at the end of the game doesn't change the fact that they were either stabbed to death or turned into a dead tree.
