What I learned from Twilight Princess
This isn't about the content of the upcoming Zelda games but rather how we will handle with the releases starting with Spirit Tracks coming probably this holiday season.
I wasn't a member of this site when Twilight Princess was realeased so I don't know about people here. But every other gaming site around was abuzz with Zelda excitement. Many were saying that the gaming world would change after its release. Once I finally got the game (a month later because I did not have a wii in '06) I found it a very good game. However it simply didn't live up to the hype. So my question is does hyping a game too much ultimately lead to disappointment? I know it did for me, and that isn't fair to TP because it really is a good game. I'm pretty irregular here, so I was planning on just leaving prior to the releases of the two upcoming games, what are your plans? Or am I just wrong?

Re: What I learned from Twilight Princess
yes it can. I know plenty of games I avoided because everyone was like "it's going to be the best evar" or saying the same after it came out. I avoided Half Life because everyone raved about it and I felt it would let me down. boy was a wrong <.< still amazing ten years later.
Really I'm avoiding the hype of Zelda Wii. In fact I'm not watching any trailers past the first one. I don't want the plot ruined (CoD4 trailers did that, and the ones for TP kinda did too). If you want the game to be awesome do the same. Then you won't have any high hopes for the game.

(He's pretty cool, and can walk on water and ****, but he can't blow up cities on command like God can, so he's not quite as cool, and yet EVERYONE THINKS HES THE BEST. WTF?)" ~8bit |

Re: What I learned from Twilight Princess
They just have to be careful about the hype they inspire.
Twilight Princess had guys saying "This is definitely the best Zelda we've ever made." during E3 presentations. Not to mention that the trailers were incredibly deceptive by Nintendo standards. EDIT: How weird that we have the phrase "not to mention that..." as a way of segueing into mentioning something. I'll leave this instance, but I'm going to try and stop doing that. |

Re: What I learned from Twilight Princess
Well i had no internet access during TP's Hype Train so i was fortunate not to get caught up in it and be let down. I enjoyed the game for what it was. And that is exactly what im going to do with the new one. Ignore the hype, judge for yourself.

Re: What I learned from Twilight Princess
To be fair. It wasn't just hype that ruined TP.
TP IS a good game. But it really isn't anything special. Wind Waker took the series in a drastic new direction, spicing things up with oceans and boats and cel shading. Like it or not, it made a bigger impact. OOT made a big impact by being the first 3D zelda. And ALTTP made a big impact by getting so much right that every zelda copies much of it's formula to this day. Anyway. My point is just that TP really didn't do anything to change the series up or draw attention from a video gaming, technological standpoint. It was just another adventure game with sub-par (for the time) graphics... although good for the GC, but it was pretty much already a dead system by that point. The game didn't really, from a gameplay standpoint, give you anything new to do really. It was a bigger Zelda, but it wasn't necessarily anything special. A good game. But not a great one. And that's why I think it failed for the most part. The next one, I don't expect much from either. I expect similar results. I hope for something better though. With this Spirit Tracks direction they're going in and the current state of Nintendo in general... and considering the Wii hardware and gimmicky motion controls. I don't really know if the next Zelda will truly be... innovative. Or not.

Re: What I learned from Twilight Princess
The only disappointing thing about TP for me is the trailers. The trailers had so much awesome stuff that they later took out in the game, like the bulblin army, cool new Gohma, Armos Titan, Goron Golem, beta forest, and the list goes on. Luckily, I found out all this stuff about a year after I finished TP.

Re: What I learned from Twilight Princess
Nearly every game since OoT has been over-hyped. OoT is the only one that lived up to the hype IMO.
But seriously, you can't blame other people/the hype if a game disappoints you. It's up to you to use common sense and be down to earth about it. Relying too much on reviews and the general fanboy hype is just plain stupid.

Sadly this game was so hyped up that most people were disappointed with it. Even more sadly for myself was that I was so disappointed with it on certain aspects yet at the same time it blew me away not just in awesome cutscenes, but in the whole world and characters, storyline etc. But no, when the head guys at Nintendo said they were trying to make it better than OoT that is all they meant. They weren't trying to make the ultimate game that makes all other games look bad... or the ultimate experience... none of that sort. Just a really really good Zelda game. Nintendo over the years has surprised us with many things... I suppose with releases like OoT. So we always expect more and more... Is it possible to get more? I know it is... because I've dreamed about it. Has Nintendo? Obviously not. Depending on how the next Zelda turns out I'm seeing is quite possible that Nintendo don't even know what is good for their own games. They also seem to be a lot more interested in dominating the market than making their best gaming series even better. Like I said, as Zelda fans we always expect more and more as well as better and better and Nintendo don't seem to think this is the necessary approach. I know if they got some real good story writers, focused on making an awesome mythology and world and then develop the game from there they would create a game that would transcend history (sounds fanboyish but its true) and we all know it. Miyamoto is a ****head and seems to be concentrating on the "gameplay" aspects of the next Zelda. Is this the right approach? I don't think so. What is going to happen (just like with the Wolf Link in TP) is that they will spend 3-4 years developing their so-called gameplay innovation and it will get them as far as what Wolf Link did (I loved wolf link and thought it suited Zelda series beautifully but they failed on the innovation aspect). Now I have low hopes for the next Zelda, literally. Though if they really can do something innovative like making a weapon that Link fights with that can transform etc etc... then that would be something.
