The Legend of Zelda, The iPhone

Anticipate the iPhone app that will be created. I am going to try my hardest to build a 2d adventure of link with the functionality of an iPhone. It will be released sometime in April of next year. I will be recruiting anyone who knows how to build an app, or has a successful app. I'm going to see if I can't attend a, I guess, convention on the iPhone control scheme and see how it can be done. I do have a secondary thought of doing an iPod game instead if the controls are easier or easier to program in. Since I can add in 4 buttons on the iPod (center, left, right, play/pause) to the control scheme and have the menu a start menu, while incorperate the ability to exit the game (have to be able to do that). I would love to hear ideas, feedback, and possible plots. I'm not sure if this thread should be in the Future Zelda thread since it will be playable, or in technology. If anyone thinks it should be moved, feel free to do it.

Re: The Legend of Zelda, The iPhone

How will you release it? I doubt apple will let you use thier site. Not to mention both Nintendo and Apple would probably sue you for copyright violation.

However, this would be cool. I suppose these would also work for itouch, since they are practically the same thing?

Well if you put it that way, that means all modders would be in court since theyre changing and displaying copyrighted material.

Re: The Legend of Zelda, The iPhone

I have my own site that I made to upload it on. As for the copyright, I will probably have to ask Nintendo to use our green clad hero. Other than that, it should be easy.

Edit: The beta will be free (a lite version basically) then the full version will be around $3-4. it will cost me $99 to register as a iPhone developer, and to register the app. If goes against the copyright, how do we have Zelda Universe or the sprite comics? Techically that would be doing the same thing. I will talk to Jason if he will let me host it onZU in case my webmaster says no for my website (he hosts it for free and regulates it in exchange that I work for him).

I admire your passion, making fangames is great fun. However, I doubt that you'll be able to sell a Zelda game as people hardly pay for software as it is and much less a fangame.

Apple would probably get sued by Nintendo for hosting Zelda-related material and Nintendo would probably force you to shut down because you tried to sell something that belongs to them (even though you made the game yourself). There are rumors floating around the internet about Nintendo shutting down free fangames in the past, but I don't know if they are true.

You can easily get away with free fangames since they are free, and usually not many people know about about them but if the game would hit it big and you try to start charging for it, Nintendo would most likely hunt you down.

Good luck! (no sarcasm)

An I-phone app? Hmmm...?? hahahahahahaha! This is Impossible since apple and Nintendo aren't going to let some person, whom they do not know make an app for Zelda on an I-phone.

Nintendo will not let some random person use one of their most well-known characters for some ****ty iphone game.

No one will pay for a fangame. Plus, that's basically begging for a lawsuit.

Zelda Universe is a fan site, and it doesn't charge for any of it's Zelda content. Sprite comic artists also do not charge for their work. Since you plan on charging people for this, that would be a clear breach of copyright and Nintendo would have your arse in court.

Jason will not host copyright violating material on his site. I highly doubt he wants to deal with a lawsuit.

Re: The Legend of Zelda, The iPhone

As far as I know, its okay to use copright material as long as you don't sell it or claim its yours, thats why zelda fangames can exist. This means you could make a zelda iphone app if you want, as long as you give credit to nintendo for making the zelda series and you offer it for free.

By the way, this will also work for I pod touch right (I don't have an iphone, just a touch)?

Yeah but he is selling it. He will not succeed and will be sued for copy right. Who is going to pay for some stupid fan made Zelda I-phone app? hahaha

Re: The Legend of Zelda, The iPhone

Hey, wow, I'm not going to be stupid about this. I'm asking Nintendo for temporary rights for this so that I can use our green-clad character. I don't need a lawsuit, and I'm hoping they'll give me permission. If not, it will be a free game. Simple as that. Oh, and how is 4 full dungeons not a large enough game. Remember, it's for the iPhone, it can't be immensly huge. If apple says **** you, then I'm going to register as a Nintendo developer (you can do that, I know you can) and re-arrange the controls around for the VC. Explain the guy who isn't working for Nintendo and is releasing the 3-d version of LA? Easy, he got permission from Nintendo and they said yes. I'm going to try to do the same thing.

I imagine that guy releasing the 3D version of LA isn't trying to CHARGE for it. You can't charge people for something that isn't totally owned by you. And even if you did get permission, you'd probably still have to give up most of your earnings to them.

You might want to recheck your definition of "lawsuit", because I don't think it means what you think it means.

The iPhone is a pretty poor platform for gaming in general.

Re: The Legend of Zelda, The iPhone

This will never fly. Not for a second. Its best to just abandon the idea right now than to go through it and waste $99 and potentially an even greater amount in a lawsuit. You have to realize that Nintendo doesn't want anyone releasing -any- Zelda game, especially for a fee. Its basically screaming "ITS MY GAME FOLKS". When Nintendo holds the copyrights to Legend Of Zelda.

So yeah, I'd just let this die if I were you. It could be good for a fangame online WITHOUT CHARGING, but as an actual app? No.

Re: The Legend of Zelda, The iPhone

I strongly suggest that you make it a free game on the PC. With the proper research and a lot of skill, you could actually make a NES, gameboy or SNES game and run it with an emulator.

For the VC? Virtual Console? Are you saying that you'd try to develop for WiiWare? If you are, then you should know that Nintendo doesn't sell devkits to individuals, you can only get your hands on a devkit if you own a company. This company must also have proper offices (a company based in your basement won't do). I am sure there are other requirements as well. I don't know how much money you have but the devkits cost around $2000-$10000
http://www.warioworld.com/apply/

Still, I doubt they would give you the rights to produce an official Zelda game. In the history of games, only Phillips has gotten the rights to produce Zelda games, and look how that turned out . Nintendo is very careful with their intellectual property.
