Cel-shaded realism???? (a twist on the old debate)

Well, i just bought the june Nintendo power, and had a quick read through. I noticed, however, the game Red steel 2 (which i think we all know about by now) looks amazing. It was Cel-shaded, with a touch of realism:

I think the game look great, its has both a touch the realism and cel-shaded effects. So i think that the next console zelda, if in the windwaker timeline, could possibly have this type of visual style. What do you guys think?

Re: Cel-shaded realism???? (a twist on the old debate)

I've been wanting them to try something besides Wind Waker/PH style with cel-shading.
It annoys me how many people don't realize it's an option.

Well...it's nice and all...but if something is realistic I think it looks better realistic. Cel shading looks better with something original/artistic like TWW or Okami. I played Prince of Persia on the PS3 and I'm not that impressed with Realistic + Cel shading.

Re: Cel-shaded realism???? (a twist on the old debate)

I'm 50/50 on it really.

I think it could work and if done correctly it could even look amazing. But there's a good amount of games out there by now that have done this already that it also loses it's touch and originality a bit . That's 1 thing that always stood out with the Zelda series. Every kind of style that Zelda has had has been original imo, there's little to compare with other games graphically.

So in that sense if they did that, they really still need to give it their own touch and I'm affraid it would turn out looking like the latest Prince of Persia, which looks great, but, then it would just feel akward.

I only have one thing to say: Yes.

The WW style was awesome and smooth, yet slightly too "kiddy" for some, while I felt TP tried too hard with the realism and sort of fell short here and there.
"Realistic cel-shading" is the way to go, I believe.

Yeah, cel-shading and realism really fits together. Everything looks much cooler if you ask me. It gives both the realistic feeling, yet also it makes sense to make humans and characters do stuff that is practically impossible in the real world.

Re: Cel-shaded realism???? (a twist on the old debate)

Personally I'm more on just plain realism (y'know, as long as it looks good, wouldn't want to sacrifice quality for something like that), but I do believe that mature cel-shading is a definite option. If done well, it looks really good, so I wouldn't really have anything to complain about.

no more heroes looked awesome, btw

Re: Cel-shaded realism???? (a twist on the old debate)

I think nintendo would be silly not to use these graphics sometime in the future. If they dare put wii-mtion plus with zelda, then the graphics should come along as well.

Toon style is a must for Windwaker and Phantom Hourglass, its not the cell shading (which merely helps the toon style dramatically)

Try imagine many of the scenes in WW and PH but with realistic graphical style instead. Does it look right when Link gets launched into Forsaken Fortress?

TP is an updated OoT/MM style though and it clearly did not look like crap.

I mean its pretty obvious they are pretty much the same thing

Re: Cel-shaded realism???? (a twist on the old debate)

Realistic Cell Shading is awesome. It would look fantastic for a Zelda game featuring adult Link. Its possible because Red Steel 2 is capable of using the same graphics on Wii.

I think is would be awesome. I just hated in TP how the landscape graphics were horrible, but if you added cel-shaded realism it would look great!
