Re: next zelda game's signature trait
That's the big question. Actually the signature trait defines everything in a modern Zelda game, including the title, the story and most of the main gameplay mechanics. And Nintendo normally starts with thinking about, what the next big trait will be.
I guess, the next main feature will focus around the Wii Controls, maybe even WiiMotion Plus. Maybe a special magic sword, that creates different effects (like ice or fire) by swinging it in different ways. But I don't know and I have faith, that Nintendo will create something unique again.

Re: next zelda game's signature trait
Well, the Wii Remote works in 3D. It can be used to point and click ala Phantom Hourglass, but it can also detect 3-axis spacial movement, 3-axis rotation and directional speed, and with the Motionplus it'll only improve.
Therefore I think the next Zelda game should have the whole touchy-clicky style control scheme of PH (but translated onto the Wii Remote, like with AC:CF), and the gimmick should be some sort of magical macguffin that can manipulate and shift objects and environmental factors in 3D space. So for example, you could pick up a box from afar and move it in 3D space (like HL2's Gravity Gun), but you could also, say, use the Wii Remote to shape the environment - imagine being able to grab a point in the terrain, and then raise it's contours, detach that piece of terrain entirely, rotate it around, and place it elsewhere using just the Wii Remote and the A button. Obviously they'd have to put in boundaries so it doesn't get ridiculous, but hey, we've got a game about time manipulation, and the Wii is the perfect console to make a game about spacial manipulation. ![]() |

Re: next zelda game's signature trait
I don't think the 'theme' should be a wii remote gimic, certainly it should take advantage of the wii remote, but it should not be something that seems out of place with the rest of the games control. For me it is not necessary for the theme to center around the wii remote since the overall gameplay will use the wii remote as best it can.
My favorite 'theme' from the previous games was the masks in MM, I liked how every mask had a meaningful back story and how they connected you to the characters in Termina. I can only hope that the future of zelda will create ways to connect characters to theme in a similar way. The theme, whatever it is shouldn't feel forced, since it is the essence of any game.
