A talking sword.
You can easily travel with it and it will be useful for giving hints.

Re: Link's new companion

Well I think I would like a fairy comanion. Like Navi in her helpful way but less annoying, and maybe kinda funny. The meeting could be like, Link goes to Kokiri Forrest to meet with the Great Deku tree to learn about his heritage and the original Hero of time and he goes back to Oot links old house and this new fairy get sent and shows up and starts talking a bout his heritage and how he was related to the fairy who helped the hero of time the first time. That would be sweet in my opinion.

Re: Link's new companion

I remember a cartoon where someone had a singing sword, so this is where I got the idea about a talking sword. I don't think the sword will mind being swung around. One of the sword's specialties could be to know an enemies weak spot.
It could be like navi where when it needs to talk to you it flashes the button. However it does not shout "Hey" and "Hey Listen", noo, it should stay quiet until your ready to talk to it.

Kinda like the goron in PH that helped you through the second fire temple. That would be pretty original and cool. OH YAAAAA!

Re: Link's new companion

Don't.

Do not ever again add a companion into a Zelda game, who tends to ruin everything. It's one of the many problems, why the difficulty in Zelda games is a joke by now. Nintendo is totally afraid, that someone could possible not solve a puzzle, so they add an ingame guide in form of those companions. If there are hints, they should be hidden like in A Link to the Past or Link's Awakening. Those games were fine without having a fairy or a gnome princess spoiling everything.

I don't really see them using a parrot or hawk instead of an already-established owl.

From just game-play perspective this is absolutely true for me. If I enter an interesting room, the feeling of figuring it out yourself is kind of lost when your companion just pops an all-too-obious hint for you. Man it's annoying, no more of that, please! Of course, the newbies need their minutely dose of advice, so there could be a hint system for them, maybe something akin to the owl from Ocarina of Time. Just not a compulsory one.

From plot perspective, Midna was super. She was a good character and really added depth to the story. So I'm kind of torn between the two functions, but the simple solution could be to have a companion, that doesn't give hints on harder levels. This way you'd have a character for the pros and hints for the newbs.

Oh, and a parrot wouldn't be my number one choice. An eagle or a hawk maybe, a parrot just seems too comical/annoying/pie.

Re: Link's new companion

I've always liked Kaepora Gaebora from LA, OoT, and FSA. He was informative, and just this huge talking owl. I honestly think he (or another talking owl) could be a nice partner for Link. No he won't travel on your shoulder 24/7 or anything, he'll just most likely fly around until you call upon him (and I honestly think he'd be really helpful).

-In dungeons he could talk to you telepathically
-In a few outdoor situations, he could help you glide downwards (not fly, glide because you're too big) to another ledge. Maybe if there's a Roc's Feather in the game, it would make you feel as light as a feather, so he would be able to pick you up and fly (and therefore, make a cool boss fight companion...but only outside).
-He could also be your personal "carrier owl", to send and recieve letters. If there's online capatability, then he could sent a message to another player. If no online cap., then imagine getting a tragic letter from Zelda to come save her at the castle (heck, that would be a great way for Link to be introduced to the owl, and Zelda asking for help from whomever reads this letter).

They need a cooler fairy. One that's laid back and helps you out but doesn't go, "Hey Hey Hey!" It could even look the same as Navi or Ciela.

I like that idea, actually. I never liked Kaepora Gaebora because he like, practically stalked you in OoT, but that's a neat idea.

That's where Midna comes in. Midna hardly talked, she was super essential to the story, and she helped a lot with pretty hidden things like in the castle courtyard where you have to do the thing with the boomerang and the pillar-fans

That is awesome. I would LOOOOOVE the Wi-Fi message idea! But if there's a Roc's Feather-like item, there'd be not much use for the gliding. You could just fly...no, wait that was the Roc's Cape that allowed you to do that

Oh thanks, I got the idea from Final Fantasy III DS remake. And instead of a Moogle sending your letter, it would be your Owl. And even if the owl wasn't incorperated into the game, the Wi-fi message idea still can be considering we have the running mailman. Plus, wouldn't it be cool to recieve a letter with a few hundred ruppees attached to it I know ruppees are easy to come by, but it would make it more fun if you could send ruppees to a newbie player (especially if you've already beaten the game).

Eh, I still considered the Roc's Cape as just gliding (you know, just like a flying squirrel -just because it's called a "flying squirrel" doesn't mean that's what it does - it glides) but you wouldn't have a need for it if theres a Cuckoo, Deku Leaf, or your Owl laying about.

The Roc's Feather makes the user as light as a feather so they are able to jump even higher off the ground...at least that's the deffinition I'd give for the 2D games it's been in. For a 3D game, the deffinition may change to just be "as light as a feather", which could also be seen as a disadvantage if you're up against enemies (joking...Nintendo wouldn't do that). The reason why Link doesn't jump on his enemies is because it's not his fighting style.
