1st vs 3rd Person

Alright, I have a simple question:

Do you think Zelda should remain in 3rd person -behind the Link looking down-

Or

Could Zelda use a transition into the 1st person -you see out of Link's eyes-

Now, there are pros and cons to either side such as:

3rd:
Pros-
We're used to it
It's tried and true
It gives a good sense of control and a good view of the field
Easier to see various things like ledges you can jump to and such

Cons-
Doesn't allow for as much innovation
It's just like what we've been doing
Motion sensative (ie 1:1 or so combat) wouldn't really work IMO

1st
Pros-
Allows for new combat styles with the wiimote
Adds to the challenge of looking for a solution
Makes the game more immersive if done right

Cons-
New territory for the series, could flop
Could make some things overly complicated due to limited camera

And so on

So, would you like to see Zelda go to first person, stay in third, don't really care, or just have the option to do either?

3rd person! I also think 1:1 sword control could work in 3rd person.

Re: 1st vs 3rd Person

I think that the mix it currently delivers provides a nice mix in regards to the gameplay. It pretty much uses 1st person only when you need to use it -- namely, when using projectile weapons.

One thing to remain aware of is that Link doesn't talk or has any sort of dialogue, he expresses his emotions mainly through facial gestures. If the game was solely 1st person, he wouldn't be able to convey those emotions (obviously). So, Link would consequently need dialogue. This would bring in another major change to the series.

This doesn't really seem well thought out lol. It basically boils down to "do you think we should have 1:1 or not?", which has been said over and over again. Also, it would be challenging looking for terrain in FP for all of the wrong reasons.

There have been lots of medieval-esque first-person games.

Re: 1st vs 3rd Person

1st person view could help to expierence Zelda in a whole new way, much like Ocarina of Time let you experience Zelda the first time in 3D. Think about it, lots of common Zelda gameplay elements would work different in 1st person, for example opening a locked door. Instead of just pushing A, you insert and twist the key with your Wiimote in the keyhole to open the door. Or opening a treasure chest could be done by pushing both Wiimote and Nunchuk forward. The dungeon map menu could be actually a real map and you look at it by holding the Lantern, so you can read it in the dark. This could take Zelda into a whole new level of atmosphere, not talking about the sword fighting, which could be much more fun too.

Of course, 3rd person perspective would remain as a help, much like the 1st person view was used in previous Zelda games as a supporting view. Could work like in the Metroid Prime games, so for example if you ride your horse, it would switch back to 3rd person, much like transforming into the Morphball does.

Link's basically an avatar for the player, and he doesn't speak. It would work fine in FP too, look at Half Life for example. I mean, you can't even see Freeman once! He doesn't exist! But the game still feels really real, because AI responds and acts so well.

And all these things can't be done in third person? I mean, when you go near the said door, your camera would just jump near your shoulder and you'd do all the wiimote-twisting there.

I don't think, that Nintendo would bother with details like that in 3rd person. See, in 3rd person you always have Link in front of your eyes, you always got something to look at, to be entertained from. While in 1st person you have to come up with some more ideas, to make the game look more interactive. Especially when your standing in front of things like treasure chests, in 1st person it would feel somehow lacking if you just had to push a button and it opens up, in 3rd person it doesn't, because you can look at Link doing it.

That's why I would prefer 1st person, because it would force Nintendo to come up with some new ideas.

God of War's have the "best" of both worlds; when you do something physical (open chests, doors etc.) there's a mini-game of button smashing and you can watch (sexy) Kratos doing the action.
The same could easily be done with Link and wiimote-waggling.

New ideas are always good, but I think FP is pushing it too far. It's a total change in the basic game mechanics.

Re: 1st vs 3rd Person

Zelda would be horrible in 1st person. It would just destroy the whole feeling of being on an adventure, and I can somewhat see it turn out like The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Definitely a big no, Zelda should stay the way it is.

Re: 1st vs 3rd Person

If the game wouldn't change too much because of it, I wouldn't mind if there was an option to play in first person, like when you go to first person to look around, you could also move and swing the sword, but even then, every time there's an option to play a game in either first person of third person, I always choose third, so it wouldn't really matter to me, but if you HAVE to play in first person, I would not loke it.

As opinionated and elitist as you may sound, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is probably better than most Zelda games in existence.

I'm just not a fan of 1st person rpg or adventure type games is all. Oblivion is definetly a very good game, but not exactly my cup of tea, therfore I would not be too happy if Zelda went first person.

I'll pass on first-person. It's not like one-on-one isn't possible in third-person.

Re: 1st vs 3rd Person

I wouldn't care either way. I liked 3rd peson, but if they managed 1st person well enough, I could like that too. The only thing that may make me err towards to 3rd person is that I wouldn't trust Miyamoto with something like that. It'd have to be Eiji.

1st person would be to strange for me, and I don't know why. I would stay with 3rd. It would be a nice experience though.
