Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

Tis a dark day for Zelda....
Oh well, he's not that bad, he just lacks Miyamoto's magic.
DS news is good. I was hoping for something like that.

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

If Aonuma's getting Miyamoto's position, what is Miyamoto's part going to be from now on?

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

It's not as if Miyamoto's leaving the company or anything. He's just taking on a position as a general overseer to several Nintendo games. And how could anyone not like Aonuma? He's done great things for the Zelda title. Before him, very little had been done to drastically change the games; they've all basically been the same thing. But when he did Majora's Mask, he had the guts to try something different, and in my opinion, it really paid off. I eagerly look forward to what else he has in mind for the series, and you all should too!

Zelda takes a new stop towards new possibilities and ways, we must learn to adapt with the present and try not to hang on to nostalgia and the past too much.

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

I'd love to see another game where Miyamoto is really in control, but as far as I'm concerned this is still great.

Majora's mask was his first game as director, and my own absolute favourite game ever. Even with Wind waker, unanimously a disappointment, Aonuma has been doing more with the franchise to really push boundries as far as gameplay elements are concerned. Frankly, Ocarina of time didn't do much that was new to the series.

Except, you know, making the series...3D...

I sort of see what you mean though. I prefer fresh ideas to stale ones. If I want classic-style, I'll play the classic games.

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

Let's stop kidding ourselves here. Ocarina of Time was just a 3D re-imagining of A Link to the Past. It carried over many of the same gameplay elements, including the dual-world concept (Light World/Dark World on SNES, Present/Future on N64). And very little of the game makes full use of the 3D arena; you're still locked to the ground like in ALttP.

But OoT did give us is the Z-targeting mechanism, without which the game would have been nigh-unplayable.

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

Well I believe that Aonuma will do a very good job (Since I loved Majora's Mask). I believe he will create a sucessful zelda game. Although I do not want to buy the DS thing (Low on funds) I suppose I must if I want to play it.

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

How could you possibly claim that OoT broiught nothing new to the table? Storyline/world/concept wise, maybe not, but gameplay wise, it is by far the most revolutionary game in the series. With the possible exception of LoZ.

O_o...

It is almost exactly the same gameplay, from a different perspective.

The only thing that plays drastically differently is the fighting.

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

If the fighting is drastically different, then... the gameplay's different. The puzzles are vasly different, because of the whole new dimension.

So. The puzzles, gameplay, and area layouts are vastly different. What else is left? Of course the game's very different then.

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

I'm sorry, but it's true. If you could position your camera directly above Link and point it downward, it would be exactly the same game as A Link to the Past, only with 3D graphics. And the puzzles still mostly involve pushing blocks into specific configurations, or standing on top of a switch, or blowing up something with a bomb. These actions make absolutely no use of the third dimension, I'm afraid. I'm not saying I don't still enjoy Zelda games, I'm just pointing out the fact that they could use a little variety and innovation, before it gets old.

Need proof? Check this out.

Hey look, Link's pushing a block to solve a simple puzzle!

I think I've made my point. I will contend, however, that Ocarina of Time had the cool ocarina game mechanic... even though that was already in both A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening... and of course there was the flute in The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link... *cough*

The puzzles may use many of the same mechanics, but the basic gameplay is still completely different.

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

The only time I've ever seen gameplay in a 3D Zelda game that wouldn't be the same in 2D would be in The Wind Waker while using the Deku Leaf. While you were still steering on the x- and y-axes like normal, you were also falling and rising (via air plumes), thus making use of the z-axis. Otherwise, Link has always been adhered to the ground.

Oh wait, what's this?

Never mind, I can't think of any puzzle that you can't do in 2D.

Re: Aonuma permanent director, Zelda for DS.

Those puzzled have become somewhat more complex with the third dimension, but are still done in the 2D games, though to a lesser extent.

Mario, I concede the point. I cannot think of any worth-while counter arguments. I suppose you're right
