Fable 2 better than Zelda?
Now that I've got the attention of a thousand angry fanboys (and girls
), I was just going to say that Fable 2 or any other reincarnation will not be better than Zelda overall. The bit I think is better though, is the combat system concerning weapons (for now). In a video preview of the sword combat for Fable 2, a player is able to block attacks, string together combos, fight multiple enemies, and even charge stronger attacks called fluries WITH ONE BUTTON! Now before you say that this is boring, it's not! It's intuitive and simple (exactly what nintendo wants), but can yield exciting and complex fighting systems. Just watch the video for yourself. I can see this as the basis for a Zelda combat system that extends the use to other weapons and string together multiple combos involving one or more weapons. For example, say Link is faced off against Three Lizafols and a horde of flying keese? Let's say A is assigned to attack and B his bow and arrow. You start by holding the A button and link will charge a spin attack. You release it as the Lizafols close in, pushing them pack. You then hit and B to draw an arrow(already equipped with a fire arrow) and take out the keese flying at you. By this time the lizafols have recovered and swing at you. You hit the A button at the right time and parry behind one, slicing him from behind . As he falls, you charge at one of the other Lizafols as you press A to take a slice at him. It connects, and you continue the combo by pressing A again at the right time to slash him again. Before the second Lizafol falls, however, the third enemy has already swung at you. If you time it right, you could press B to have Link roll away from the Lizafol and while rolling draw an arrow to your bow. As the Lizafol recovers from his missed jab, you are already standing away with an arrow drawn taunt. All the Lizafol can do is watch as you let loose the arrow and it impales the dinosaur for a head shot. Epic, I know.

Re: Fable 2 better than Zelda?
Its not whether or not the game is better, but whether or not you enjoy the game.
but yeah, the Zelda really needs a better combat system. I mean i love hacking and slashing my way threw mobs like the next guy, but it really does need a better combat system. A system where we can actually engage enemies in sword fights. Where we can block, parry, and counter attack. Giving Zelda a bunch of combos, so we could get a more interesting fight. Maybe have two combat styles. The Classic chop and slash and the new one. Just so that if people prefer the old, they can stick with it. I love options, they are the perfect solution to most things. ![]() |

Re: Fable 2 better than Zelda?
I'm not going to lie when I say that Molyneux manages to excite more with Fable 2 than Miyamoto did with Twilight Princess or any Zelda game. Maybe that's because Molyneux sometimes goes a little over the top in interviews and stuff, but so far I've enjoyed his games more than Zelda.

Oh well. Maybe it won't be that bad. I'm not interested, that might be because I've gotten a bit sick of elves and orcs.

Re: Fable 2 better than Zelda?
Fable 2 better than Zelda? Hmm, I don't think that comparing those two games is even possible. Fable 2 is a game that, as far as I've observed from watching trailers about it, is about side-questing for money and marrying people. Of course, there are main quests as well, but I doubt they'll resemble Zelda's dungeons.
For side-questing I think taking Fable 2's example for a bit wouldn't be bad. Also, the whole overworld looks amazing, and if Zelda's ever going to return to the 'realistic' style, they better make it resemble Fable 2 a bit. But to say that Fable 2 is a better alternative for Zelda is nonsense. The whole battle system-thing you pictured should be possible with just a little fine-tuning. I'm currently replaying The Wind Waker, and the combat is awesome of you're a little good at it. I can do things that come close to the epic battle with your new battle system, plus things that are hella funny. I'll refer to the battle in Hyrule Castle, when you just got the Master Sword: I was fighting a couple of Moblins and Darknuts, and almost all I did was use my shield and A-counters. The battle was full of awesome, those guys ate dirt. I can't exactly describe how the battle went, but it was fast-paced and full of adrenaline. I bounced between the enemies and all they could do was stand there, or, in the Moblins' cases, swing there sticks at me mawing down their allies. The funny part came some time later: I went upstairs to deal with the last of the enemies, and saw three Moblins walking with their backs facing me. So I snuck up to them, got a bomb, waited until it almost blew, threw.... BOOM! Three Moblins flew all over the place! Once I started fighting them after this surprise attack, one of them swung with his spear, hitting down the others! I blocked that attack, but one of the following blows did hit me... though it was no problem, as it was really funny: I was bashed down one floor, and stopped because I hit the Hero of Time statue. That battle was by far one of the best experiences I've had with Zelda's combat, and it just shows how good it is at the core. With the next Zelda on the Wii it's going to be even better, as there's going to be 1:1 sword-combat... no, with the 1:1 innovation and some extra context-sensitive moves, the system is far from old... One last thing about Fable 2: I think it'll be a sweet game, but my cousin's going to buy it, so I'll just borrow his version.

Re: Fable 2 better than Zelda?
But see, that's the point. You don't have to have this supper complicated control scheme that gives you 1 : 1 control over Zelda. All that would do is still keep it a wild hack 'n slash game.
What Fable 2 has done is implemented a system that has a variety of attacks, great combos, able to engage multiple enemies, AND is simple yet rewarding at the same time. It's all about timing, pressing the button at the right moments will perform various acts in given situations. As an enemy attacks you, you can press the button to parry or counter attack. After you've attacked, you can continue your attack with a combo attack by pressing the button again at the right time. Would you rather have the same kinda fighting style only instead of pressing A, A, A at the right time press A, then B, then C? Really, what's the difference between one being over complicated?

Re: Fable 2 better than Zelda?
Personally, I enjoyed Fable a lot more than any of the Zelda games. Not sure why, but hey, I did. Anyway, I definitely agree with the opening post: Zelda's combat is getting incredibly stale. I would love to see a much more in-depth combat system. Imagine Link encountering, say, an Iron Knuckle. Obviously, Link is fighting a physically superior opponent, so his attacks should be quick and precise, allowing him to use his superior agility and smaller stature to his advantage. The same thing could apply to any other enemy. Basically, a reactive combat system that depends on the player's input as well as the enemy being fought.

Re: Fable 2 better than Zelda?
Indeed, the extra moves are a start, but we could have had those on the N64. (perhaps even SNES, and technically did for both). We need a system of unlocking new things that doesn't depend on monetary issues, how far you are in the game, or grinding. You should just be able to experiment and find out something new. Perhaps have a way for Link to learn an enemy's move here and there. Those sorts of things.

Re: Fable 2 better than Zelda?
Fable 2 > than what Zelda has provided us with so far.
As far as depth of gameplay is concerned, graphics and otherwise are givens. Zelda only has its story which well, doesn't really play a big part.

The way you describe the battle system of Fable 2, it sounds very comparable to Zelda's battle system, but the games as a whole aren't comparable I think. Fable is like an unorthodox WRPG, while Zelda is action-adventuring in the most old-school way you'll get(hopefully that'll change with the next game, the franchise HAS to modernise).

Re: Fable 2 better than Zelda?
But whats gameplay without a story? It's like an empty shell. Without story, there's no reason for gamplay. Games without story is like music with only drums.
