Forge Quest?

I'd like to see some sort of forge quest in the next Zelda, you could collect items from dead enemies and keep them in a bag (like the spoils bag in TWW), and use them to make different weapons and items. Not only would this add a little bit of customization, it's also give you more stuff to do. (kinda like the merchants quest in TWW except WAY better and with a TON of extra stuff)

That's one of the best ideas I've heard all day. The same weapons are getting annoying.

Re: Forge Quest?

You mean like in Fallout 3?

I'm gonna say no.

Maybe have a guy who will make items for you from the various random oddities you pick up that can be used to access other areas of the game or perhaps a few dwarven smiths (ALttP cameos) to upgrade your sword however you like, but the idea of having customized weapons and items doesn't work in a typical Zelda layout because specific items are needed in specific areas. If you wanted to upgrade items for aesthetic value, then perhaps, but it would be totally optional.

I can easily see a Zelda game doing that...(again) Phantom Hourglass has costomizable boat parts...perhaps they carry on costomizing items and equipment.

People always say stuff is "not Zelda", but I really don't get it. I mean, you want Zelda to evolve, right?

I had this idea before you did and dominated it.

You should be able to make your own swords out of things you find like any other item. In changing the sword's abilities you would also change its appearance. I figured this whole system out with another game in mind, but it could work great for Zelda.

Base:
This option would change the size and shape of your sword, from daggers to scimitars to bastards swords, etc. It would provide the basic range and speed as well as a large chunk of the look.

Material:
This would affect its speed, damage, texture, and defensive abilities. It could be various types of metals, stones, kinds of wood, and animal bones.

Essence:
This would affect it's special abilities and give the sword a specific type of edge, making it look more fierce, frilly, or anything in between.

You can only have one of each category (of course) and every sword would have its strengths and weaknesses depending on context. You should be able to carry 3 or 4 different swords at a time, so you wouldn't have to make a new one every time your circumstances changed.
If you don't believe me that I'm SvenHudson, you can message me in the Game Informer Forums, where I still go by the name SvenHudson.

Re: Forge Quest?

im kinda against too much customisation, as i dont think its what the genre needs everything is super freedom open world complete customisation, and i think we need to get past this in order to move things forward.
but, i do think there should be some way of augmenting existing weapons
the weapons will lose all individuality if you allow them to be customised
i know that sounds wierd but think about it
if you could create a custom sword, there would be no feeling of weilding a great ancient weapon of heroes like the master sword, just a boring history-less generic sword
it would have history, as you created it ten minutes ago
i personally think zelda should move further away from being an rpg, and closer to real action-adventure games that currently set the bar for the genre, like shadow of the colossus and ico
but some sort of augementation would be ok
just not entirely user-created weapons and stuff
if you want that, play fable 2

whos played shadow of the colossus? i think that is the direction zelda should be going
and if that sword was user-created, all the magic of it would be gone
same with zelda

Re: Forge Quest?

As long as it's not too much customizing, it be great. Look at it like this, OoT had three swords. Kokiri sword/dagger, master sword, and then the third was the somewhat optional big gorons sword/giants knife. So, think of a customizable sword as that third "optional" sword. I think it'd be great!

Re: Forge Quest?

Yes, but that was a set line with one set outcome. I would like a "tree" line. You have this Item, item A, and you can do two things to it. You can do this and make it Item B, or you can do this and make it item C. Then you can do two things to each of those outcomes, ect. ect.

Re: Forge Quest?

Link the 13th, I don't mean to sound rude at all, but it's impossible for something to both stay the same and evolve.

And I think this is cool, with PH and TP being "the last Zelda game of their kind" it's fun to imagine what sorts of changes we will be looking at.

To me, a customization system sounds like a simple next step. It's not quite as jarring as a change of time period, but less arbitrary than just changing the main character. I hate turn-based RPG's, but I love the selection that RPG's have.

Perhaps the Master Sword has a unique material and attribute, and is not customizable, that way we could still customize but also need the Master Sword.

No. Lose the Master Sword as a unique item, because I'm tired of the plot relying on it. Instead, why not just be able to make a duplicate with the customization process. With my customization method there would just be a specific essence that when applied to the long sword base would give it the shape of the Master Sword, for instance.
