Look at Jak and Daxter (then again, he's much more badass when he begins to talk). I agree with you that the protagonist should speak -- especially in this day and age of gaming where there's fresh VA talent just waiting to be found.
However,
if Nintendo decided to make
just Link a mute, I'd want them to take a more interactive RPG approach that allows Link to interact with the characters and initiate all sorts of dialogue, but are also able to retain his vocal muteness (e.g. main characters in Oblivion). Again, I'd still prefer Link actually speak. But if push comes to shove, this is how I'd want Nintendo to approach Link's lack of vocals.
