The Legend Of Zelda: Solar Anchor

Just a mix of a few ideas I've had recently.

The Legend Of Zelda: Solar Anchor is a game that tells the story of a great flood in Hyrule. It is a 'realistic' Zelda, but also uses the light cel-shading effects from the Wii Fire Emblem game. The game starts with a mosaic display and a retelling of the story of the Hero Of Time. After which, gaming ensues.

The game starts with Link, a humble delivery boy named after the great hero, about the age of MM Young Link, delivering a parcel to the King Of Hyrule in a recently rebuilt Hyrule Castle. About 100 years have passed since Ganondorfs reign. All is going well for the lad in uniform, until after delivering his package, a man in golden armour (adourned with the Gerudo logo) and a blue aura storms the castle with his troops. They restrain from harming anyone, but they completely surround the king.

"Daphnes, the time has come. You owe us land. You owe us freedom."

The king of course, responds.

"I owe you nothing! We can't take any chances after Ganondorf's reign of power. The Hylian Council doesn't even have you on records -- we don't know who you are or how you got here."

The armoured man, enraged, removes his helmet, revealing himself as the evil that the tales told. His hands glow and he chants a spell, as the entire of Hyrule begins to shudder.

"Hyrule is set on a timer, old man. If we can't have it, no-one can."

He and his troops leave the castle, attacking anyone in their path. Among the mayhem, Link gets knocked out.

He awakens in a small room. It has veins running through the walls filled with lava. A monkey walks up to him and slaps him to check that he is awake. He jumps to his feet, and more monkey start to arrive. Chibi-ish monkeys though, not those filfthy baboons from TP. These, as it turns out, are incredibly clever monkeys. The chief monkey informs Link of what has happened.

"Link, Hyrule needs your help. You have been unconscious for two days. The situation is dire.

Ganondorf, king of evil, has accumulated a massive power. He has the fate of Hyrule in his hands, and he's not afraid to use it. A spell has been set on Hyrule; in one weeks time, the land will crumble from the bottom upwards if Ganondorf doesn't have his way.

Matters are much worse than that. The sages of Hyrule have activated the Tablet Of Floods. Legends say that the long-forgotten Tablet Of Floods is the only link between the Hylians and the Gods. When activated, an eternal storm falls upon the land, causing a flood. All those sealed among the waters are frozen, locked in time."

The chief Monkey then sets you task of being a new hero, but in a very different way. Your task is to help the inhabitants of Hyrule to the mountaintops, the only safe place to be.

He then reveals something shocking to Link.

He is, in fact, in the centre of the sun, which happens to be inhabited by monkeys.

_________

Link is given a tunic by the monkeys, and a mechanism called the suns anchor. The Suns Anchor is a big clockwork machine that attaches to Link's arm. By using the Suns Anchor, you can 'hookshot' onto the sun, and drag it downwards. He also gets a monkey companion, Kimp.

Throughout the game, the water level rises slightly at many points. At the start of the game, there are simply puddles of water, but near the end, the flood is reaching the mountains. Like WW, you cannot dive. By raising and lowering the sun, not only can you increase the temperature, the temperature can help lower the water temporarily so you can stall time to help the Hylians escape to the mountains.
__________

That's all I've got for this idea so far. I've also got a few other ideas, though I'm not sure how they'd fit in just yet --
  • At some point early in the game, you must fend off enemies in Hyrule Castle whilst waiting for a timer to deplete so Lower Hyrule is flooded, leaving the enemies in the castle time-stopped.
  • There are timered sections in dungeons when the water is constantly rising.
  • The sun is a layered dungeon. It consists of about 5 layers. These inner layers can be shifted so that corridors connect with other corridors, so you can progress.
  • At the end of the game, on an empty island (a mountaintop among the floods) Link delivers a 'finishing' blow to Ganondorf. Him and the Master Sword impaling him are sent rocketing towards Hyrule Castle underwater before they too are frozen like the rest of Hyrule.
  • When the game ends, Link destroys the sun anchor, leaving any remains of his tale forgotten. Aside from Link performing helpful deeds to help the tribes climb the mountains, the Hylians are surprisingly unaware of everything Link has done for them.
  • There is a 'civil war' at a point in the game between the hylians and the gorons who are unwilling to give up their mountain homes. The Gorons lose, hence why there is so few of them in Wind Waker.
  • Fun Fact: There's no way the Hero Of Time had any children in this timeline, so WW Link would likely be the decendant of the Link seen in this game.
  • It would use some sort of advanced shadowing system relying entirely on the position of the movable sun.
  • Your primary mode of transport is a kind of Manta Ray (looking alot like the Male half of the Gyorg Pair) that is blessed with the ability to go into the flood waters without being frozen in time.

______

I'm having a mental block, so if anyone wanted to carry on this idea it'd be great.

Detailed, but I'm sure lowering the sun would simply kill anyone in Hyrule and reduce it to a desert? And how would you 'raise' the sun using only an anchor, from below?

Dude, it's a magical anchor.

Things in Zelda aren't supposed to make sense, you know. So what if the sun can be moved by a hookshot/anchor? It wouldn't be populated by monkeys either if we're being realistic, nor would there be an all-powerful set of magic gold triangles.

Is the idea of monkey's living on the sun inspired by an episode of I am Weasel? <_<

Also, where the hell do all these good ideas come from?

That's true, but if you're using the sun to control the level of water, then you'd have to take into account other effects.

That's really the only stand-out thing about what is otherwise a rather good game idea, you've gone into plenty of detail and even tried to fit it into the timeline, which I applaud you for.

"I am Weasel?"

The name strikes me as familiar, but I just can't remember it.

Well, it would have other effects; smaller trees would die, the water shortage might cause famine among Hylians, and the rising temperature would provide particularly nice conditions for monsters to thrive in. It wouldn't directly kill anyone, but it would have consequences. If they can have a falling moon that doesn't affect the tide, they can have a sun anchor.

Sweet, sounds like you have this planned out well. Nice to see that you actually explained a way around it rather than just blumph your way through with some tosh. I look forward to hearing any more ideas you may have for this game.

May I ask, why monkeys though? o.0
