Pardon my blasphemy...

Am I the only one that would be into an experience points/levels based Zelda adventure? I think that would be a fun way to take the game deeper and make it larger/longer/more involving.

In my opinion the gameplay that zelda has now is what makes it remain the lead franchise for nintendo becasue it differs so much from the conventional Fantasy games out now by keeping close to its roots with timeles gameplay.
It's really what makes Zelda; Zelda.
The system you speak of would make Zelda an RPG and thats far away from what Zelda is or in my eyes should be unless Squareenix suddenly makes a bid for the franchise and wins.LOL but no one wants that to happen.

Re: Pardon my blasphemy...

I wouldn't like it, but I would like to see more realistic things like we saw in MM, with people doing things instead of standing around, and being able to interact with NPC's more, like for example, the guy in WW in the bar who flips out if you break stuff
I like to feel like I'm in a world with real people, not just automatons who stand there all day saying the same thing.
an I'd like to be able to interact with the environment more, like tables, chairs, objects. if htey were movable that's be cool (thinking of morrowind, only not THAT detailed, ot hell- sure, why not?)

but Artorium is right. part of what makes Zelda Zelda is that it's NOT your typical RPG.

Re: Pardon my blasphemy...

I get the system, you know advancement bases on acquisition of new items based on completion of dungeons... and I wouldn't want that to change for the world. What if just a hint of experience were thrown in the mix? Maybe the dungeon bosses are harder/easier to beat based on how many bad guys you've killed up to then? something like that? I think it would be worth trying

That was wonderfull in tWW the way they made the majority of characters react to the world around them and we should deffinetly see more of that. Make Zelda realistic whilst keeping the 'Animated' feel becasue that also makes Zelda; Zelda.
I havent played TP for 6 months now so did they intergrate that into the game; i cant remember?

No, I wouldn't like that kind of Zelda game. As said before, it wouldn't make a true Zelda game.
It would probably be thrown aside by fans.

Re: Pardon my blasphemy...

Not as well. But they did a good job with the Castle Town, I thought it felt more alive. Zelda doesn't really need experience, but more interaction with the environment and npc's. I really loved the feeling of MM and the characters within it.

well the bosses are already too easy, imo. and if some people fight every enemy they encounter (those crazy people who feel the need to do EVERYTHING in the game) so it would be kind of a punishment for those types.

zelda, being more of an adventure/puzzle game gives it's "advancements" by allowing you to access new areas once you get the right item. i love that, because you can see something enticing, like a chest, and not know how the heck to get it, maybe even waste a bunch of time trying to get at it, then once you're in a dungeon, you get something and you're liek "OMG I know how i can get that dang chest now" it's much more satisfying than going "only 396 more xp to go then i can get that armor upgrade"

Re: Pardon my blasphemy...

In rpg's like final fantasy, you usually get more health and more powerful attacks as you progress through the game. In as you progress through a Zelda game, you usually get more heart containers and a more powerful sword.

Don't buy into the anti-hype. A black sheep is still just a sheep. It just has a higher level of uniqueness.

Re: Pardon my blasphemy...

Ok, so the whole RPG styled Zelda thing just dosn't go down well with me. The thing is, Zelda is based around exploration; if you are willing to explore, you can find more Heart Pieces, more powerful weapons, and Magic Spells. You are almost rewarded for curiosity and deviating from the set path.

What you describe is somthing completly differant. It would be based around repetitious combat and level grinding. That isn't what Zelda is about.

However, intergrating some RPG element into the game isn't nessicarally a bad thing. For example, maybe a point-based system which gives you points for defeating enemies, or chaining combos, which can then be spend on upgrading spells or even customising appearance. This would give a more satisfying element to the combat.

But not a linear leveling up system. Ugh. Not that it is a bad thing (hell, I love Final Fantasy as much as anyone), but not for Zelda.

Re: Pardon my blasphemy...

I think a real time experience points system, such as the one seen in Adventure of Link would be an excellent idea.

I thought the system worked brilliantly there, and makes killing enemies feel that bit more satisfying, because you know you're getting something useful from it, rather than just another bloody green rupee.

Obviously tweaking would be in order. I haven't played Zelda II for ages, so I can't remember if this was implemented but experience points for exploring and finding rare items and the like would be a must.

Re: Pardon my blasphemy...

I think a Final Fantasy II-esque system of levelling up could work quite well. In that game, spells and weapons became more powerful as you used them more, so why couldn't the same apply for Link's items? Use the bow a lot, you can fire faster and more accurately. Use the sword a lot, you learn new attacks and become stronger. Use the hammer a lot, you get stronger and faster with it. There's no reason why this wouldn't work.

And now I'll be proven wrong.

Re: Pardon my blasphemy...

No. I don't want Zelda to turn into our generic RPG. If we have Experience points, the next thing will be using a type-system like in Pokémon.

"Oh, a Stalfos Knight. It's Shadow-type and has mediocre Resistance Points, so if I use a level 4 Light Arrow that will do around 64% damage!"

Re: Pardon my blasphemy...

I think that Zelda shouldn't go down that particular road; however, I certainly wouldn't mind more equipable stuff (tunics, shields, swords, etc.). I think that having a bunch of them with different properties might allow for more strategic gameplay (using tunic x against this boss instead of tunic y). Maybe I'm just insane, though. I guess I'd just have to play it first and see how it goes.
