Perhaps it is an interesting idea to someone who loves RPGs. If it had to be an RPG, it would have to stay medieval. If it didn't... it would lose it's magic.
You wouldn't mind at all if they stuck to the old formula? Are you completely serious? You do realise that the game then actually becomes about collecting special items to advance the plot and ultimately "saving the princess" occurs all over again, don't you? This limits the possibilities the developers can work with, this includes: storyline, gameplay and other features.
The same old formula has been used since
ALttP, which was made in 1992. That is almost 16 years ago. Zelda fans are tired of playing through element-themed dungeons, collecting stones/medallions/pendants and saving the princess. It's the same old thing, over and over again. And Nintendo have already made a statement (that I can't think of at the top of my head right now) that promises everything and anything, so we'll just have to wait and see.
