Should Link be able to leap?
Should Link be able to leap?
I'd like to be able to do more than just go up to enemies, target them, wait for them to attack me, stun them, then strike them a few times, repeat, finish them off. Now in TP, we saw some pretty cool things when it came to boss battles. Remember Morpheel? Link had to shoot his clawshot at it's eye and by doing so he could climb onto it's back and wound it. Then when Link had to face Argorok he had to shoot his clawshot at it's tail and bring it down with the Iron boots. Shortly followed by having to shoot the claw shot at the eye on it's back and stabbing it. Thought that was good? It could be even better. How about fighting big monsters? And being able to leap into the air and climb onto the leg of the monster, then cut the legs off, then jump onto it's back and stab it in the back to finish it off. This could be performed with the Wii-remote. Where the jump button could be assigned to B. Pressing B would just do a small hop. But running and then pressing B would create a bigger jump. Jumping and then pressing A will make Link drive his sword into a monster's body. If the monster is wearing armour, Link must drive some sort of special weapon into the monster's armour so he can harm it. So if the monster is in range of his leap he can jump onto it and use a Clawshot type of weapon to hang on. Now you must be thinking, "But what if it's a flying monster, how would Link jump 30-90 metres in the air?" - Easy, he can use his Clawshot to hook onto the monster. This opens up other options. Once Link is holding onto the monsters body (leg, back, neck etc), he can climb around wherever he wants. This could be done by pressing the down button the D pad. Each time the button is pressed the player must move the Wii remote in the direction they want Link to move: four directions - left, right, up, down. This must be done at the same time as the button is pressed. If no action takes place, Link just drives his weapon (Sword/misc weapon) back into the monster's back. With that said, it is easy to tell that if this really could be done, boss battles would never be the same. In fact, Nintendo could make fighting big boss-like monsters commonplace in a future Zelda game. And I think that would be awesome. Us Hardcore Zelda fans want a change of Zelda formula. Don't throw out the staples, don't throw out puzzle-solving, don't even throw out dungeons, but vastlyimprove the fighting and swordplay. Don't just have a few big boss battles, have many, some that take place underwater, some that take place in the sky, some that take place on a mountain peek, some that take place over gigantic castles. This sounds a bit like SotC and a lot like Beowulf, but it would improve Zelda so much. Not just for bosses and big monsters, but even for smaller monsters. Imagine fighting the monsters that are around five-ten times the size of Link and having to beat them some way, but there is no way fit because every time you cut their leg or arm off, it just grows back. You must find a way to beat it. And you have all these great options to defeat it: you can stab it in the back, the chest, cut it's neck off... you could do anything. Options are plainly endless and there are a variety of ways for Link to defeat his foes. When fighting enemies, the Jump button would allow Link to jump off his foes and leap from the air, he would then have enough time to shoot his clawshot at a wall or pillar, that would save him from hitting the ground and killing himself. When using weapons and anything that needs to be "aimed", "thrown" or "swung" when fighting enemies, it should all be done in third-person perspective. However the "on-screen pointer" allows the player to have ultimate freedom at what they want to point at. For example, if the player has just dived off a flying beast in the sky (dragon?) he sees Link from a fair distance in which he/she can see his surroundings quite well. The clawshot should be able to cling onto any wall or pillar made of any material to make it easier and have a wider sence of freedom, rather than trying to pin-point some wire or mesh. Having a grapple hook would also serve it's purpose. The grapple would hook onto any part of an enemy selected (a tail, neck etc). Then Link won't drop to the ground. From this position, the Wii-Remote can be turned in a a semi-circular motion that will let him swing backward - this builds up momentum - then if the Remote is turned in a full circular motion, Link will swing on his rope and to the monsters back. It could also be used to climb, yes actually climb the sides of mountain walls. I think walking up a mountain isn't very fun. So climbing up would be a whole lot better. They could use the controls you thought of when you climb up a monster's leg or something. - Froto79 I'll leave it at there and see how what everyone thinks of this.

Re: Should Link be able to leap?
Obviously, they're all magical items and weigh next to nothing. Or Link wouldn't be moving at all. I think this idea has great points, and should be considered in a new Zelda game.

Re: Should Link be able to leap?
I'm pretty sure there was a reason for him never jumping. It was so the game would have more of a puzzle feel, instead of a pure RPG. Obviously RPGs have puzzles, but none quite like the Zelda franchise has. I think thats what made the game play so unique. Besides, You obviously don't need a jump button to enjoy the game, so why risk it. And as for the little battles you were talking about, I think it would get a little repetitive. And the "On screen pointer", if you were aiming that, how would you control links movements in mid-air?
On the other hand, we do need a different way of playing Zelda, because its already getting old so, why not.

I said the Remote would be used for sword actions and things. It's quite simple really. The on-screen pointer appears when you take out a weapon like a bow, clawshot, etc. However it stays in third-person. Also, about the jumping thing. Maybe the "jump" button should only work when Link is in range of a monster larger than himself, or when he is holding onto a monster.

Re: Should Link be able to leap?
Regardless, if you had to aim the wiimote AND control link, I think people would mess up and stuff far too often, because I already screw up on trivial stuff like that in the Zelda games now.
Although I do like the idea of it only working in the range of a monster. That, is a good idea. TP was a gamecube game, that was mirrored for the Wii. I bet that there is something similar to this idea in the actual Wii game already.

The one problem with that battle though was that it wasn't paced fast enough. It was slow in the way the player had to clawshot to those pillars to get high enough to clawshot to those flying things. Then it was awesome when you actually got on the dragons back. I was thinking more along the lines of having to get onto the dragon's back in the first place. Then it will fly around and with smart AI, it will try and throw you off. To stay on, you have to do whatever you can, like keep moving around it's back and stabbing it. Once you reach the top of it's neck you have to wait for it to start flying upward. While it's flying upward, you get your chance to really hurt it. If the player has been staying on the dragon via the clawshot, then he has to press the B button again while pressing the A button to "drop", but "leap". Once this has been done, the player can push the Wii-remote forward: this will make Link slash the dragon down the back and really hurting it. Then the player will be given just enough time (as they are falling), to pull out their clawshot with B, quickly aim at part of the dragon, and then stab their Wii-remote to finish it off (they'll fall with the dragon). Or, if falling with the dragon doesn't work like it did with TP, they can have their Hover boots assigned to the D pad, which will break their fall.

Re: Should Link be able to leap?
In theory, this is a decent idea. But I have a Wii, and it is accurate, but I don't think its quite fast enough. During the dragon boss, I think that it would end up working, because it is a much higher distance to fall. So your original Idea of a lot of huge monsters is a good one, but how many can you really have in a single game when they aren't sub-bosses or bosses? If anything, they should just have a tone of sub-bosses, where this rule applies. Really, I'm not trying to come off ass thinking its not a good idea, because i think it would be cool. I think its just a matter of it being too difficult or not, in both game play and monster placement.

Re: Should Link be able to leap?
I wouldn't mind if Link jumped or leaped at all.
It sounds like a good idea. I remember playing Twilight Princess with my nine year old cousin (a Zelda fan too, but couldn't get a copy of TP becase it was T for teen and his mom is pretty strict) and he told me that if Link could jump, it would be so much better. I could see how making Link jump or leap would be better. Battles and fights could be more interesting and funner I guess.

I don't really care if you do that but can you put somewhere that I made it up? Just so people know who to credit and things like that.

Re: Should Link be able to leap?
Well duh. Link should be able to jump why would you not want jumping in a videogame? That is the most abusrd idea I felt to this day to not have Link jump.
I mean even if it's a puzzle game that shouldn't force Nintendo to cut off Links ability to Jump. Think BK/BT by Rare Banjo has the ability to jump and there are puzzles in the game such as switches that open stuff and you have to play mini games for jiggys yet the game is an Action/Adventure game too. You even have to know the secret combination to free someone from a prison in one of the eariler levels. I am not going to get much into that since it's another game. I think Nintendo could even make an entire dunegon based upon jumping. Don't know how that would work though. Maybe Link would have to jump platforms to the other side to get a way from the lava? or jump across the fake-floor?, get away from the spikes that shoot out of the walls at the middle of the hallway? Or jump over the poison darts? Or just jump up and down when you are angry at a dungeon? I feel anyone who doesn't like Jumping just dosen't like change in a videogame like the WW haters for Cel-shading or changing Links tunic or something like that. Though you have a right to disagree just as long as your not mean about it unlike those people that say no for no particuler reason whatsoever. I defintly think this would cause more obsticales Link would jsut have to dodge at the least an intresting change. |

It's too late to add a jump feature now, but there should have been one from the beginning. Seriously. Someone name me an adventure game where you can't jump. You can even jump in Halo!
