The Perfect Overworld
One of the few things I look at when I play any game in general, is the overworld. Wether in be a hub world ( Peach's Castle in Mario 64), or a top down mini world (most RPGs), it has to be a place that you enjoy being. It must have great music, beautiful scenery, be realistic (hills and trees anyone?), and something to do, even if its only fighting enemies.
My perfict overworld will NOT be an OoT overworld. It must have the most boring overworld of all Zeldas, 3D and 2D. It was very flat with bearly any trees, hills, enemies, and it wasn't even fun to look at. The music was also way too... blan. It was so peaceful it was boring, as a matter of fact it fitted the land. MM's overworld was... unrealistic. Four different paths to four different settings, and they didn't even blend in to each other. Grass suddenly becomes snow... in a streight line?! No. Plus once you got on one of the paths, the only way to get to another is to go back to the overworld, no short cuts (no, I'm not counting the owl statues). You'd think I'd be pissed at Wind Waker.... but no. It did what it was suppose to do, give you the feeling you are at sea. The music was perfect, and yes there was alot of eye candy. It actually had the right amount of enemies, just the wrong kind. More land would have been nice, and pirates would have been great, but overall, Wind Waker's overworld is one of my favs. TP, near perfect. It just needed a little more to do than fight enemies (remember enemies is a good over world, enemies + gimmics make great overworld). Ether way it goes along with WW as my fav. What I would truly love to see however, is a 3D version of ALTTP's overworld. Add Wind Wakers amount of side quests, and it will win. |

Re: The Perfect Overworld
I'd have to say TWW has the best overworld if you ask me. Amazing music, tons of stuff to do.
I would have liked to have seen a bit more big islands but otherwise brilliant.

Re: The Perfect Overworld
ALTTP and LA, in my opinion, have the best Overworlds of any Zelda game. Great music, non-linear, open enough to explore, yet not too empty to call boring. Each area in both games had trees, grass to cut, water, cliffs, etc.
I would've given TP this award, but it's overworld was far too linear. Traveling got mass boring, and it would seem as if I'd be going around in circles...

I think I would be satisfied if, like I said before, a 2D overworld became 3D. |

Re: The Perfect Overworld
I do like ALTTP's, I gave me a vibe of a Kingdom that OoT doesn't and I love its layout. That said, if AoL's was made in 3D in its whole nature (including the area from LoZ) with a revamp it would be pretty great, The towns with great sea cliff views and such, and especially if Taakeslottets idea was in.

Re: The Perfect Overworld
They could make a blend of TP and WW in the sense that it's half land and half water, the water being filled with tiny islands to the scale of the ones in WW, and the mainland being divided up into three or four large islands, each one a little smaller than the overall size of OoT. It could be something like a prequel to WW, and play something like MM. Perhaps the land is being flooded during the game, and the longer you play, the more land disappears until you're standing on the pinnacle of a mountain and then a sage comes or something and sends everything back in time to when Link first began his adventure, only this time he has all the items he's gotten so far which allow him to get to get to other lands quicker, before they disappear uner the ocean, and it'll happen again and again and then finally you have enough items to get to Ganon's fortress before it starts the flooding.
And maybe each island could belong to each faction, that is, Hylians, Zoras and Gorons, and there has to be lots of towns, maybe one or two cities, have as many sidequests as WW and all of them almost as intricate and time-sensitive as the ones in MM. Or something like that.

Re: The Perfect Overworld
TP's version of Hyrule is definitely better than OoT's, but the graphics in OoT were some of the best I saw in an N64 game. Ogre Battle 64's graphics beat all, but that's off topic.
TWW's overworld is one of my favorites. I loved sailing around and looking at the sights. About the only thing that would make it better is if all the islands were as big as Dragon Roost, Forsaken Fortress, or Forest Haven. Some of those islands weren't really what I'd call islands. Just some rock formations barely jutting out of the water. I've heard that TP's overworld is bigger than TWW's, but it doesn't feel bigger. It's got some great places, though. Even though I like the forests around Ordon, one of the best places gets permanently covered in fog. I guess the perfect overworld for me would be a blending of TWW and TP.

Re: The Perfect Overworld
If TP's overworld is near perfect, and the best overworld in the Zelda series, then Zelda's overworlds must really suck.
Anyways, I think the perfect overworld is just a large, non-linear world full of cities, changes of elevation, rivers, lakes, moutains, forests, and battles*; oh, and I like when the music is ambient or peaceful (think Metroid Prime's Talon Overworld), but I lthe music should get epic when enemies appear. Basically, Oblivion's overworld, but without the loading. *When I say battles, I'm not talking about the garbage in Twilight Princess. I'm talking about fighting real enemies (Lynels and Dodongos) that do damage like in LoZ's or MM's overworld. The "battles" on TP's overworld were pathetic, and Ocarina of Time, while having the superior overworld in my opinion, completely lacked any enemies for the most part.

Re: The Perfect Overworld
Has anyone played Assassin's Creed? That game had a great overworld. It was big, full of life with people traveling from town to town, there were lots of little towns everywhere, etc. A Zelda overworld needs to be like that, with Wind Waker and Majora's Mask's amount of side quests it'd be perfect.

Yes. Enjoy that spot while you can, because it just isn't the same after you save Talo.

Re: The Perfect Overworld
The Overworld of Twilight Princess frustrated me. It breaks my heart to have an entire setting that felt just as trapped and prision-like as that of Ocarina Of Time. It would be a real joy to see a world that doesnt consist of enclosed fields. I want to see a world that is like Legend Of Zelda. Massive and non linear. I would rather have a larger world with content spread out, than a smaller one that would be jam-packed.

Re: The Perfect Overworld
Yeah, they tried to give the feeling of the OoT landscape. I liked that they were trying to take OoT and improve on it. I don't need something totally new every time, just improved upon.
