The Futuristic Zelda thread

After seeing the fake April Fool's video of a futuristic Zelda game, the little hamsters in my head got pumped full of 'roids. I got hit with millions of little pictures going through my head, and now I think I have them organized enough to put out a workable story for the next Zelda game:

I only have a semi-complete idea for the opening, so bear with me...

High up in the sky, the skyscrapers loom over the forgotten past of Hyrule. Hover-cars speed by and air-railways dart by transporting people from one end of the land to the other. In the midst of all the new technology, new ideas, and new people, a select few have charged themselves with the task of preserving the past. In a small church, this group gathers to pray to the three goddesses, and one of them, is Link. His good friend pulls him aside from the prayer and says that he has a great secret to tell Link. He says that Link was delivered to the steps of the church as a child. He had no records of any family, friends, or anything else. The one thing that stood out about Link, was the gold triangle that appeared on his left hand.

The church investigated this and kept the secret from him that he holds the Triforce of Courage. After 17 years, the secret is finally revealed.

Immediately after Link learns of this secret, his friend falls to the ground with an arrow through his back. Men dressed in all black drop from the windows and start raiding the church for important relics and information. Link is cornered by one of them. Then, a motorcycle bursts through the wall. The rider knocks Links assailant out and gestures for him to get on the bike.

As they escape, Link tries to find out who this mysterious person is. All the rider does is stop on the side of the road. He says, "I saved your ass, what do you care?" The rider then elbows Link in the stomach and knocks him off of the bike. The rider then takes off down the street and disappears.

Link notices the men in black followed him out of the church, so he ditches his robes and blends in with the crowd...

I like your idea and everything, maybe Link like uncovers temples that have been sealed and built over and what not. That would be neat.

But to be honest with you though, althought your idea is a neat one for a future zelda, Zelda is a medieval game. That's all I'm saying about that. But I do like your idea though.

Definitely a nice thought. But the future kind of set just bothers me a little. I like Zelda the old fashioned way.

I am going to have the world split up into multiple parts. The Hyrule part will have Upper Hyrule, Lower Hyrule, and Old Hyrule. Upper Hyrule will be the location of the new castle and the bulk of the business. Pretty much the market so many years after the old Zelda games. The Lower Hyrule will be the slum area. It will run off of crime, almost having no authority (by the way, the guards will affect the way you go through the world, GTA style). Old Hyrule will be the familiar Middle Ages layout, all busted up and decayed. Te forest will be over run by Ghomas and Stalfos, the temples and old dungeons will be hidden, making it an epic battle just to get to the front door.

I knew I would get these. At least these comments don't look like this topic. You guys just said "good idea, I don't agree", which is fine.

My main point for this game is to show that it can be done, and be done well enough to please new gamers and old gamers alike. By the way, there will be a lot of old and familiar elements in this game. The story goes like this:

Link figures out that he has the Triforce of Courage. He follows the guys who attacked the church and finds out their secret. If you don't want to spoil the story for this game (most of you won't really care) don't read the rest of this.

Link follows the guys back to a Stargate looking portal. They put in a medallion that was stolen from the church, which joins five others. The portal activates and they men go into the portal. Later, Ganondorf comes back through the portal, leading the other men and an army of Terminian guards. Ganondorf wages a war between Termina and Hyrule. It is later revealed that the war is a distraction so he can find the 12, yes that is right, 12 pieces of the complete Triforce.

Of course, this game being in the future, Link will have an arsenal of new gadgets. One of them being a modern version of the hookshot. It will be a wrist-mount grappling hook, with a secondary option of an assassin's blade. Another is, like nobody saw this one coming, a lightsaber-style weapon. I will probably rename it to avoid the Star Wars inclusion. I have much more, but I don't want to give away the entire game, otherwise it will suck like everyone thinks it will!

I think it's pretty good.One thing I have thought of is that when he goes down to the fith dungeon in old Hyrule,link uncovers the master sword in the sacred grove.After he collects the sword,he is ambushed by poe ghosts who find him.link finds himself in a temple,that the poe ghosts took him to.But instead of attacking him,the poe ghosts tell him about his past.At first,Link didn't belive them.But then they showed the past to him in life.Link figures out that his mother hated him,and sold his soul to a boblokin.They show him a mirror that shows a true reflection of whoever gazes in it.Link soon finds out that he is also a ghost,because of his mother.They tell him that the spirit of the boblokin who has Link's soul is still alive.the poe ghosts aid Link on his journey to the boblokin and his mother's spirit,so he can regain his soul,and meet his hateful mother.

what the hell is a boblokin?
Just so you know, I am the co-writer for all of this, and that is the weirdest thing I have ever heard.
I very highly doubt that Jan will say yes to that.

Uhh. Huh? 1st, what is a boblokin? I am not going to come in and claim this entire idea to be my own (and PD, it isn't very nice to come in and shoot ideas down like that.) but I do have to say I don't agree with that idea. It is a very interesting idea. I don't think it would fit in with my game idea.

By the way, as soon as gliderpilotgirl edits my first post, this is going to be the Futuristic Zelda thread where we talk about anything pertaining to ideas for a Zelda game based in the future.

On topic, I think this is a brilliant idea: the idea behind the Zelda franchise would work in any time period. A Hero will always arise to defeat evil, though his methods may change a bit.

I can see you wanting to avoid the Star Wars comparisons, but the fighting methods would be appropriate/similar, as would the inclusion of the mythology in a modern setting.( like the Jedi stuff )

Here's a question, how would Princess Zelda fit into this future setting? I doubt absolute monarchs would exist in this timeframe, yet her personality may be fitting to a different role, politician, military leader etc.

A bokoblin is one of the annoying green/blue/red goblins in TWW, they are the blue white haired goblins in TP as well.

I am thinking of keeping the monarchy where there is still a King in power, but I could always change this to a more modern style government. Also, it probably would be an absolute monarchy, but maybe a gov. setup similar to what Britain has right now. Royalty sitting on the throne to look pretty, while Parliament runs the country...

Also, pertaining to Zelda:
The mysterious bike rider that saves Link from the men that attacked the church is my modern version of Sheik. Zelda slips away from the castle and tries to live a life away from the royal pampering. She ends up getting interrupted by a religious/magical upset caused by these men stealing important religious/magical items from specific places all over Hyrule.

In the UK's case, the role of royalty is mainly ceremonial right? ...but nowadays royalty can serve in the military, go to college etc..I can see that ability fitting Zelda really well. Her current medieval position caters less to her personality ( tomboy, adventurous ) than the future would. It would be the perfect opportunity to take her even furthur away from the helpless Princess role that she is often forced into.

To the spoiler, I figured as much when I read it..and that role is appropriate.


So, your thoughts on a villian? I'm not sure the classic evil villian taking over the kingdom by magical and brute force method would work so well..a more subversive approach ( like the Emperor used in Star Wars ) may be the ticket. Ganondorf ( or whoever ) would need to be more devious.

My idea behind Ganondorf coming from Termina is based off of OoT when he was thrown in between dimensions. He finds a way into Termina, and his followers in Hyrule are able to open a portal to Termina and let him back into Hyrule. Ganondorf starts a war to distract the world from his real quest. So I guess that takes it slow like in Star Wars, but with a different approach. He farces the two dimensions into a war and then looks for the Triforce pieces with nobody but Link after him.

I am changing this idea, so scratch everything in that spoiler and check out my later post with this bold red above it.

Ok.The villain would possibly be one of the attackers of the church,or a fed-up leader of the lower Hyrule who wants a lawless kingdom,he/she wants the victory over all laws and orders,so every one might do whatever they want(like dominating everyone with torture,or death.).So,basicly...Its some fed-up moron who is careless about everyone but himself.

Here's another question..in the future modern world, what would Link do before his quest? In TP he was a rancher ( a common non descript occupation ) and in his other incarnations he was too young to really have a career before being drafted as the hero. At age 16-20ish I could see him being a student, I have trouble picturing Link as much older than that.

I just talked to Jan and he says that Link works at the church. He isn't a priest, but he works and lives at the church.

Yes, Link lived and grew up in the church, but also lived a life in the city. He studied ancient sword techniques and went through physical training in his teen years. This will explain Link being able to wield a sword like a pro, and being able to do ninja flips around Hyrule.

Yet another update (now that I have feeling back in my fingertips after last night's post). Sorry, but no new pictures this time. I am still working on some city concepts.

Head Items:

-Cloak (will cover head and body)
Blend in easily with the crowd and sneak your way out of a sticky situation.

-Bike Helmet
Advanced sensors give you a heads up display of everything going on around you, giving plenty of time for reaction even flying through the Lower City at over 150 mph.

Military Helmet (name in the works)
Sensors that make the Bike Helmet wet itself. Almost nothing will be able to sneak up on you, and also gives you what seems to be superhuman reflexes. Although it is just state-of-the-art environmental detection and threat breakdown software, all conveniently located on the front visor.

Re-Breather
Allows you to stay underwater for extended periods of time (given that the air tanks are not punctured or empty). WARNING: Does not protect against pressure from deep sea diving!

Zora Helmet
Advanced techno-gills allow you to almost literally breathe the water surrounding you. Protects the user from high pressure situations underwater, and is durable enough to handle most underwater combat. Headpiece for the Zora Armor.

Goron Helmet
Ultra strong impact dispersal system keeps the wearer conscious even after a swift blow from a giant rock golem. Also, cooling systems and air vents allow the wearer to stand intense heat. Headpiece for the Goron Armor.

Other head items are finished, but I am releasing info about my game slowly. It just wouldn't be all that interesting if you knew everything before my game was done...

good, good, But we should focus less on items, and more on story.
