Death recording

Do you think that future Zelda games should bring back the idea of 'death recording'? That is, whenever you get a Game Over and continue, it counts the death and shows it as a number on the File Select screen (or during the credits when you complete the game).

I had a dream that I completed Twilight Princess, and at the end of the credits it showed me the number of Deaths (Game Overs) and Falls (into bottomless pit, into lava etc)

The fact is, from Majora's Mask onwards, the Zelda games seem to have abandoned the idea of recording how many times you have died, and I'd really like to see that reinstated for the next Zelda game - perhaps with a special reward if you get through the entire game with 000 deaths. How about also recording the number of times you save, and/or limiting the number of times you can save the game throughout your quest?

Any thoughts on these ideas?

Re: Death recording

Recording saves and deaths are always interesting statistics to go over after you have completed your quest, however a limited number of saves (unless it is really part of the fabric of the game, like Majora's Mask) would be simply annoying, because it has little going for it, and forces you to keep an eye on how you use your saves. Because of that rule, you may not be able to have the same replay value on a long-lasting game file.

Re: Death recording

Game Over and Fall counters would be neat to have... But I would not want limits on the save system! There are many times when I have to stop playing suddenly or only want to play for a short time, and I would detest saving restrictions.

Re: Death recording

There is no need for death counts anymore. Aonuma is going out of his way to make sure that no one will ever die (or take massive amounts of damage) to please the non-gamers while the hardcore Zelda fans are starving for challenge.

Re: Death recording

Death counters are a cool idea, but they would have been pretty irrelevant in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess...as they wouldn't have much to count. Still, I'd like them to be included in the games anyway. Not essential, but nice to have..

Yeah, you know how you said "from Majora's Mask onwards"?? Well that's when Eiji took over. Many of the games under him have ended up good, but they got easier and easier as time went by. I still consider the new ones good, just ridiculously easy.

I am desperately hoping that TP was just meant to convert people to the series so they can make a game with actual challenges. When that happens, a death counter would be nice. It is worth mentioning, though, that I fell many times even in TP.

Nope, Twilight Princess was said to be for the hardcore Zelda fans (as said in pre-release interviews). What a joke. . .

Seriously can you trust Nintendo when they say that?

And can you really Zelda games are only for hardcore Zelda fans. No you can't because it's not true. Zelda is for anyone who wants to enjoy an epic adventure with Link.

I'm also sure TP was a lot harder if it was their first Zelda game.

As for death counting, I don't really care for it. It's not a major deal. . .

This has nothing to do with me. Noscreenname said: "I am desperately hoping that TP was just meant to convert people to the series so they can make a game with actual challenges." and I let him know that Nintendo said they were targetting the hardcore Zelda fan with TP. Regardless if they did or not, that is what their intention was (or atleast, that is what they said).

Re: Death recording

Having a death counter would be fun. You can see if you or one of your friends can have the least deaths in one of the games.

Why the f-ck hasn't Nintendo given Zelda a difficulty setting?

Re: Death recording

The death counter is a nice feature. It's kind of fun after years of not playing deciding to play and if you still have your old slot to see how many times you died your first play through.

But there should not be a limit on when you can save in the game. I didn't exactly care for that in Majora's Mask. It's not fun to play unless you have at least an hour or two to play, and it poses a problem when you have to save your game quickly.

Re: Death recording

While I think that the death counter should return, it should include not only deaths but also saved games as well. That way people are constantly striving to better their number by longer sessions and more skill, until (if they can) they get down to zero.

Like with the old games? I know that's how ALttP worked on the SNES. The lowest I ever got was 004, I think.
