What about the Great War?

There where a great war in Hyrule, a long time ago. However, wouldn´t it be great if a new Zelda game was all about that? I´m pretty curious about why it started and such. What do you guys (and gals) think?

Re: What about the Great War?

It was called 'The Imprisoning War.' And it wouldbe pretty cool to have a game based on it, althoughI don't know how much of a success it would be.

Re: What about the Great War?

Only if it's worked out well. I mean, if it were a Zelda-RTS; No.
If it would be just the theme of a random Zelda game worthy the name Zelda, it would be alot more then great. It would not be only about war, but also with some dungeon and other Zelda-ingredients involved. Imagine the new Sidequest posibilities, so you can see how all NPC's are facing the so great discussed war. Imagine a story so good, that even newcomers will understand a bit, and not only Timeline-theorists. Imagine, sitting on your horse, together with other Hylians. The general tags everybody off with his sword and gives the sign to attack. With your screaming army behind you, and an even harder screaming army in front of you.
Now THAT would be a good game-idea. But not only a good idea, but possible too. If it's worked out so that it's still a normal Zelda game featuring Link, with a story that newcomers can also understand. With the Improsining War only near the end of the game, then it wouldn't be impossible too....

You´re much better at catching the audience than I am, Abner! A game that solely contains the war, woudn´t be that great, but a game that leads to the war. Now that´s something! Why did the war start? Where there any rebellious groups?

I think it would be great

It's a Unification War. I think it's pretty obvious how it started.

Yes. Ganondorf reared his ugly head after Mrs. 3xgoddesses made the 3-force. (triforce)

NOT 4-FORCE.

Re: What about the Great War?

Its the Fierce War. And I wouldn't want to play that game, since OoT is sorta that. Link's mother was escaping the war. I don't think it would work out.

Re: What about the Great War?

I wouldn't mind a game focusing solely on a war. I'm a big fan of Star Wars: The Clone Wars for GCN (also for XBox/PS2) and I thought it was great! But if this idea were to work for Zelda, it would be best (in my opinion) if there was a game that led up to a war first.

Re: What about the Great War?

The war prior to OoT was called the Fierce War, and I made a thread about it a while ago. Here's the entire thing:
Quote:
The Fierce War. In OoT, it is said that a Fierce War took place shortly before OoT. Who was fighting who in this war? Why was it started? How was it ended? The last two are impossible to answer, but I'm going to answer the first one. You may say that this has no relavance to the timeline, but if you understand more of Hyrule's history, you'll have a better understanding of the games in general. Plus you can use events not covered in games to fill in gaps and make the timeline flow more easily. Link's mother died in the Fierce War, as proved by this quote:
Quote:
Originally Posted by Deku Tree Sprout

One day, to escape from the fires
of the war, a Hylian mother and
her baby boy entered this
forbidden forest.
The mother was gravely injured...

Her only choice was to entrust
the child to the Deku Tree, the
guardian spirit of the forest.
The Deku Tree could sense that
this was a child of destiny, whose
fate would affect the entire world,
so he took him into the forest.
After the mother passed away,
the baby was raised as a Kokiri.

And now, finally, the day of
destiny has come!
So Link's other died because she was injured in the war, so the Fierce War took place about a decade before OoT and Hyrule has only been at peace for about a decade. Look at the quote again. It says the King of Hyrule unified Hyrule as one country. It doesn't say reunify, it says unify. This implies that this is the first time Hyrule has been unified as one kingdom. Hyrule probably wasn't at war until shortly before OoT, it just wasn't one kingdom.

So who was on who's side? Well let's look at the Sheikah:
Quote:

So the Sheikah have been guardians of the Royal Family for generations, so they were on the Hylians side in the Fierce War. Who else was friendly with the Hylians?:

Domain in northeast Hyrule. An
aquatic race, they are longtime
allies of Hyrule's Royal Family.
I heard that only the Royal Family
of Hyrule can enter Zora's Domain...
Hoo hoo!
Long time allies. So the Zoras were on the same side as the Hylians and the Sheikah. Starting to look like that this war wasn't a great all out battle between every race that some people have speculated. Whgo else was on th same side in the Fierce War? Let's look and see:
Quote:

Darunia has strong connections with the Royal Family, because he and the King are "Sworn Brothers" and the Gorons have been entrusted with the Spiritual Stone of Fire, which has been in their keep for a while:
Quote:
You obtained the Goron's Ruby!
This is the Spiritual Stone of
Fire passed down by the Gorons!
So the Gorons have always been friendly with the Hylians. Now we have the Hylians, the Sheikah, the Zoras and the Gorons on one side. What about the Kokiri? Well they have no idea about the outside world, and the Great Deku Tree wouldn't have allowed them to become involved in the Fierce War. So the Kokiri are neutral. The only other race that I haven't covered is the Gerudo. There isn't any text to suggest that the Gerudo are long time friends of the Hylians, so the Fierce War was fought against the Gerudo.

What the Gerudo did to upset everyone else is unknown, but there may be something to suggest how the dispute was ended:
Quote:

sincere.
Ganondorf may have been the one that ended the Fierce War, possibly by apologizing and swearing allegiance to the King. You may be wondering "why would Ganondorf do that?". Easy. He wanted the Triforce. He needed the Ocarina of Time and the three Spiritual Stones to get the Triforce. He had already nearly forced the Kokiri, Gorons and Zora to give him the three Spiritual Stones by cursing or depriving them of something in their society. He needed to be friendly with the King of Hyrule to get the Ocarina of Time, so he had to end the Fierce War to do that.

So there you have it. The Fierce War that happened shortly before OoT was fought against the Gerudos, with the Hylians, Sheikah, Gorons and Zoras being on the same side. The Kokiri weren't involved. I hope you like this of info that reveals a small part of Hyrule's history.

Re: What about the Great War?

Nice collection of info you got there, ZeldaGamer21.

However I would love to have a Zelda game that had a war going on. Where Link takes part in some of the fighting, while most of the time its just like a regular Zelda game... Only with bigger battles.

And at the end, after the big battle, after the credits role... a cutscene happens.

A women is running across a field with something in her hands, the music is sad and the mood is grim, she enters the forest and runs through the woods until she meets the Great Deku Tree.... the mother removes the blanket and a baby boy can be seen. she says his name is Link, and the Deku Tree accepts him.

Then the game is over.

Anyways, I want to see a game that ends with Link's mother giving the Deku Tree Link.

Re: What about the Great War?

Oh my!
So hyrule wasn´t a nation before the great war, eh? then it would be strange having a game about the time shortly before the war started. Because almost every Zelda game has been about Hyrule. (not TMC, MM and FSA but they where sidestories)
But I still kinda like the thought of having atleast a proper explanation in a future Zelda game.
