a closer look at these soldiers

I know everyone has seen the artwork for the soldiers before. But just noticing now, I don't think they are human.
Now look closer at the chin, its completely rounded. Plus there is no mouth, instead replacing it are a few dots which I know are not part of the helm. Discuss, do you think this could possibly be another race in the game?

Re: a closer look at these soldiers

My first impression was that they were wearing some sort of cloth mask underneath their helmet. But maybe you're right.

Re: a closer look at these soldiers

I think that they're just Humans/Hylians. The helm is very similar to ones worn by medieval knights, those ones also didn't have chins. The fact that they're wearing the symbol worn by Hyrulian knights was also a bit of a hint .

Those "few dots" are probably air holes, so they can, you know, breathe

What I find kinda cool/odd is their spear/shield, I mean, they have what looks like legs made of gold. They're obviously ceremonial, but still.

Re: a closer look at these soldiers

I agree with Bomber Nr. 5's Cloth Mask Theory. It looks more like that then a skin. And for me, the picture only says it IS human. If it really was a new race, the costume would at least be different and not so much like this Hylian Style thing.

And in case it would be a new race, I would be rather disappointed. But there is a slight change it really is another race, for what I think.

That looks to me like it's just a mouthguard. You can even see a sort-of silhouette in it that resembles what the face beneath would look like.

You never know, though.

Re: a closer look at these soldiers

5 fingers, arms torso legs head... yeah. their human.

the helm is fine, you ought to check out helmet designs from medeval and rennaisance europe, you'lle find some designs very similar to the Hyian soldiers.

the helm itself looks 3 peice. Head covering, chin/mouth peice, and visor. I'm sure that the visor only goes up to cover the soldiers mouth, while the visor extends out to cover his nose.

What I truely love however, is the mixing of european design aesthetics with south american/african geometric design, it's quite appealing.

I actually remember hearing from an intervue that they will actually be able to walk with those legs. So like a mobile shield and spear so that they dont have to fight on there own or maybe they throw the spear and then it jumps back .
Im not that sure of that intervue though, about 65%.

Re: a closer look at these soldiers

No, it wasn't an interveiw, it was some random mag or site picture description.

"Oh my, these soldiers sure our lazy, they even have legs on their sheilds."
something like that, but I know for a fact that the whole walking sheild rumor is not true.

But, i'm sure that the legs are used simply as a stand. Imagine in a battle the soldies simply set up their sheild to increase their vantage point, slowley creeping across the battle feild, setting up their sheilds so as to free their hands

My thoughts exaclty, the lower part seems to be more a sort of cloth and I can definately see a normal human face in it.

While on the subject, does anyone else think that those 2 black spots ontop of the shield are used for peeking trough the shield? Seems useful during an attack, you get a view of your enemy while safe behind the shield.

Re: a closer look at these soldiers

If they were hylian they would probably need some place to hold the ears since Hylian ears take up quite a bit of space, they are for the most part ceremonial because their weapons aren't very good against melee fighters (like swordsmen). They look more like anticavalry units (who hold their spears out to stop horses from rushing them)

The legs are probably so that they don't have to hold them up for a long time. Those guys don't look like they'd be foot soldiers, but more like sentries, and if they're standing around for hours, their arms would get incredibly tired from having to hold up such heavy weaponry for such a lengthy period of time. With the legs, they can just hold onto their equipment, set it down and just stay on guard duty without any inconvenience.

Sure, but gold legs? They'll be completely useless for that role. Given enough time they'll simply bend out of shape. I suspect that they're palace guards, so they dress formally, but that they're not actually expecting any kind of attack.

Re: a closer look at these soldiers

Who is to say that they're gold? Generally, gold is rarely that light of a color. And bending? Not as easy as you think, look at them, they've already been manufactured with an angle, the weight of the shield is spread out instead of focused onto one thin point.

They look like a mix between Middle Age Knights and Japanese Samurai.

Re: a closer look at these soldiers

Can everyone please stop saying that the guard is human? He is HYLIAN. TP is only a few decades after OoT, so the Hylian race hasn't started to decline yet. The thinning of Hylian blood starts to happen around TWW, and TP is a good few hundred years before TWW, so all people in TP are Hylian.

Re: a closer look at these soldiers

Poeple breath through their noses. Not their mouths most of the time. So those holes are for breathing..
Nah they aren't *(sarcastically says).

Nothing more to say about this topic folks.

Why do people keep saying "human"? Knights of Hyrule have always been Hylian and always will be. As long as there is a Royal Family around in the Zelda games it means there are Hylians. Link will always have pointed ears and so will Zelda. On Outset Island in TWW only the fat woman had rounded ears and so did her two children.

Majority of the people in Hyrule in future Zelda games would be Hylian.

Lets say 85% of Hylians with 15% of Rounded ear-people. Hylians will always be the dominants and the rounded-ear people would be scarce, eventually.

I agree look at the elaborate design. Their just there to look pretty and deal with the ocassional drunk hylian. Or the Goron who has a one rock to many. There not excpecting any heavy battle situations.
