Time for a new Hero.

Don't get me wrong. I love the character Link. I've grown rather attached to the green tunic, hardcore hood, wee bootsies, and messy blonde hair, just like every other Zelda fan. And there will never be a video game hero who is as much an icon of his series as Linkie.

But, seriously, I think the Zelda series could still do with a new hero. No, I don't mean they should get rid of Link for the new guy, I just think we should add something new to keep the series fresh. Because, honestly, characters like Kafei or Mikau are much more interesting to begin with, and have much more realistic motivations for their involvement in the events that surround their backstories than Link tends to for his saving the world.

So, what do you think--new hero, or no new hero?

i like link. i dont have a problem with adding a new character, maybe have a mysterious 2nd hero guy who link meets later in the game. but link should still be main hero.

1. Link has not always had blonde hair, it was pink in ALLTP and brown in a few other games

2. There already has been a "Zelda" where link wasn't the hero. It was one of the CD-i games........ let's leave it at that.

3. Mikau really wasn't that ineresting to begin with, he played guitar in a band, and died tryig to help the girl he loved.

4. Same with Kafei....... he has even less of a backstory......he is the son of a cheiftan... he had a cool grandma..... the end..... I don't really see ANY motivation there

1: and what does that have to do with anything?

2: people learn from their mistakes.

3: interesting enough to me

4: Less of a backstory? He was one of the most developed characters in MM

Yes he's the son of the mayor, and that was Anju's grandma not his. Now what you forgot was:

Skullkid turned him back into a 10 year old 3 days before the wedding with Anju. He wants to explain it to her but is to affraid. He makes agreements with the mailman and you, to try and fix what's going on. Both Anju and him made a mask to show their love. Kafei tries to find the guy who stole his mask and ends up chasing him. Eventually both decided to meet up with each other despite the fact that they know the moon is gonna fall.

Kafei's sidequest was BY FAR the best and most developed one. If that's not motivation, then I don't know what is.

As for my opinion, I wouldn't mind seeing a new hero as long as they don't completely cut away link.

Re: Time for a new Hero.

Link is my favorite video game character, so I am gonna have to say keep him as the hero. It may say Legend of Zelda, but it is just as much his story as it is hers.

Re: Time for a new Hero.

Link will do fine if they make 1 or 1,000 more Zelda games with just him.

But I do see your point, Lio. I think they should give Link a partner to help him fight evil. That would be pahsweet for sure.

oops, i was thinking of Komali, not kafei:embrsd: but just because they have "character development" doesn't mean that you could make a game about them........

As long as it isn't Zelda. I don't think that would be a good game, but that is just my opinion.

Re: Time for a new Hero.

If all esle fails, Nintendo could make the new Zelda game called Legend of Zelda: Catfish's Requiem, complete with a brand new, player controlled Gyorg! Just kidding. But seriously a new hero wouldn't hurt, as long as he/(she?) is not too unattached from Zelda. Think about i, Laura Croft in a Zelda game???]

But then again. All of the Links aren't the same person, although they share similar characteristics. I wouldn't want to stray too far from the tried and true Link, but it would be good to "modify" him a bit. Perhaps some future game will give you the option of designing a costume for Link. We do eventually get tired of the same old green tunic and boots.

Re: Time for a new Hero.

Asking for a new hero, is like asking for a new Plumber. It just doesn't work that well. Maybe instead of a new hero, just being able to play as a few more players for short amounts of time to do certain quests and such? That'd be much better than getting rid of our hero all together. Technically not all together, but just him not completing his journey. It'd be weird.

EDIT: vvv Andross: Haha! Great minds think alike

Re: Time for a new Hero.

Well, technically, most Links are new heroes.

But, anyway, no, I think Link is alright. It'd be like making a Mario game and putting Luigi in it instead of Mario, as a main character. . .

Alright, Mario isn't the best example. But it would be like a Final Fantasy without chocobos. . .

Well, technically, there weren't chocobos in the first FF, but you get the point.

Anyway, maybe they could have portions of the game where you don't play as Link. TP allows you to use a new character, Midna, that rides around on your back. Maybe you could play as Zelda at times...

But, I just don't think that a Zelda game without Link is wise for Nintendo... It's like...

Mario Party without Waluigi. . .

Well, that one is a terrible example... Considering he came a bit later...
Well, you get the point.

Re: Time for a new Hero.

I think Link is a great hero, but instead of the usual *save the land of Hyrule along with the princess* gig, maybe Nintendo can come up with a new motive for Link like you mentioned with Kafei or Mikau, to keep the story interesting. Just as long as they don't change Link too much, maybe he could even don a new outfit or something like that, anything to spice it up a little!

Re: Time for a new Hero.

I never said we should "get rid of Link." Just that it'd be nice to have a change of pace every once in awhile. I mean, Mario has his Luigi. Link doesn't have any such sidekick. I know it's his style to work alone, but we could have someone else run about saving Hyrule for once.

Well, technically, Link has had several sidekicks... He's had some playable, and some not... Tingle is one of his sidekicks, and he has gotten his own game... Navi isn't playable, but she can help... Midna is (Somewhat) playable in portions of TP...

Well, maybe more games focused on Tingle would work. Heh.

Re: Time for a new Hero.

If we were to play as another character, I would prefer the game to:

1) play much more different than the current play style of zelda

2) pull a MGS2 and have us play as link for a little bit, have the "New hero" converse with link on many occasions, and in some dungeons, work with link to complete puzzles.

3) The Link that is present would have to be a previously seen link on a whole new adventure, perhaps play as the new swabbie while link from tWW is all grown up and is second in command of tetra's ship.

See, there is an interesting relationship between the main character, hero, and player. when we read a book, we are sitting there looking into a certain fiction and following the exploits of a character. when we play video games we are looking into a fiction, and now controlling the hero/main character. In most games the hero is also the main character.
We need to keep link as the main character, through and through, but the hero may change, so we play as another character, and no we are able to see link through a new set of eyes, our own, and those close to him.

I say that a Zelda game must always have Link as the hero, but I am not apposed to a game that takes place in Hyrule that doesn't have Link in it.

How would it be a Zelda game if it didn't have Link in it??? Link has always been the hero in Zelda games. (Well, except for that one CD-i game, but that doesn't count. A game without some kind of Link-like entity wouldn't feel right, at least to me. (Thats why Im not getting the Tingle RPG, or whatever that game is called)

Technically, it wouldn't be a Zelda game if it didn't have Zelda in it (Or if she wasn't mentioned.) It's a little weird how they named it after Zelda and not Link... Heheh.
