Realism in TP (or whatnot)

Ok, I know everyone is getting sick of TP threads (I know I am... unfortunately) but there is just one thing I'd like to ask you all.

After reading this new article from Hyrule.net, it finaly urged my to ask the rest of you the question that's been buggin' me for a while.
http://hyrule.net/?get=newsview&date=1391&lan=en

Ok, first off, has anyone played the new PS2 game, Shadow of the Colussus? It's a great game, and one thing they nailed is the realism in the movements of the characters and their responses to their environments. In the article from the link above, Nintendo said they are finishing off with making the wolf Link move naturally. Now, we don't know how it's going to look until E3, but from the previous E3 '05 demo, both wolf Link looked a bit stiff, and also Epona's (easier to say than Link's Horse) construction and movements looked less than a true horse and, well.... Moves kinda like a car, a mindless transport vehicle.

Now, in SotC, When you try and turn left, the Horse half fights against it's rains, the gallops aren't evenly spaced, perfect unison like that of Epona's. And sometimes it randomly neighs or moves possition at times.

Now, what I am wondering, is that the Epona of TP is going to be exact same as Epona from OoT. A mindless, running vehicle. TP's Epona reminded me ALOT of OoT's Epona, at how much the same it looked. Now, here's one thing that neither has done (though I might be wrong by the time of E3 '06): when you leave your horse on it's own in SotC, it walks about at times on its own accord.

So, what I am asking of you, and wondering, is that what do you expect from TP's Epona? In my oppinion, I'd like to see as much "real" Epona can get as Nintendo states that it's going for a "realistic" approach to the game.

Re: Realism in TP (or whatnot)

Well, they didnt delay the game for nothing. As they said, the delay was made to make the game perfect. I doubt that nintendo are gonna leave Epona like she was in the demo. I admit Epona did look stiff, i just always assumed that it was defanatly gonna be fixed up. If they dont... well, i guess that would be a big let down in realism.

Re: Realism in TP (or whatnot)

Well one thing about SotC (a favorite of mine, mind you), is that given all the realistic movements, it's controls would be horrible for any other game. Of course there are probably ways around horrible controls without sacrificing realism, and Nintendo probably figured some way hopefully.

I'm expecting wolf Link to look A LOT better than what we've seen, and Epona for that matter.
I read that Aonuma and Miyamoto (at last years E3) were watching SotC with praise. I think they might have been taking a few pointers (hopefully).

Re: Realism in TP (or whatnot)

When they say Realistic, they mean a Real Zelda World, not as in a Real World with the name Zelda slapped on it. They want to stay true to the Zelda franchise not the Real World.

So, while in Real Life a horse may struggle a little (although well tamed horses wouldn't), in the Zelda it might not be the same.

Re: Realism in TP (or whatnot)

I agree with Tjalian. There's only so much realism you can have, especailly for a Zelda game.

Just to bring up one point" motion capture. It was what they are working on during the dealy (though obviously not exclusively) and that should add a huge amount of realism to fluid movement. They're using motion capture for link, "epona," and wolf link, plus I'd wager the enimies will benefit, too. So maybe the horse will be more of a "mindless running machine?"

Re: Realism in TP (or whatnot)

Well, we all know that the E3 demo was shown way before they were done with the game. Not even half-way through, I might add. Now, I AM looking for some MAJOR realism in the game, but not TOO much. If you had TOO much realism, Link would be squashed flat after he jumped off one of those towering cliffs, but that's beside the point. If we're talking about the way things look and feel, then we need some major improvement. In the E3 trailer, the entire Twilight Realm seemed to me as if it was put together by playdough; the graphics were that bad. Epona's mane didn't even budge either. Too much hairspray or a desperate call for more time? I pick option #2. What I'm trying to say is, since TP has been delayed almost 2 years now, by the time TP reaches your Gambecube/Rev, it'll feel as if you were right in the game. After all, Aounuma DID say the game would be perfect...

Re: Realism in TP (or whatnot)

I never really saw much problem in the horse's animation-now Link's running animation DID look a bit funny though

Re: Realism in TP (or whatnot)

It was stiff, but never fear, more time is here! Don't worry, the game will be perfect and I doubt Nintendo would let something as simple as stiff horse movements prevent TP from being dubbed as "the best". Really, they'll fix it.
