"The Twilight Zone" (spoiler)

This topic only discusses what is clearly presented in the 3rd E3 trailer, but that trailer does give away key plot elements, if you haven't seen the trailer and do not wish to have these elements 'spoiled' then STOP! You have been warned.

As anyone who has seen the newest trailer probably realizes, when Link entires the Twilight the world becomes black and white. The only exception is that many characters have some sections colored (Link's earings, Midna's headgear, those wierd-tentacle-face-things chest symbol). So... opinions?

I absolutely love the style. Coloring key elements on a black and white picture is an effective artistic technic that I've been fond of for a while (before Sin City... ).

My only grip is the minimal color added to Link. I don't know, being the main character I'd just like him too stand out more. Although, I have to admit I don't know what should be done about it. Link's fur has a slight greenish-brown tint, and I'm pretty sure that going with full blown bright neon green fur would be the wrong direction. So I'm just whinning I guess...

What does everybody else think? Like it? Hate it? Insist on trying it out before you make an opinion?

Re: "The Twilight Zone"

I think it's really good, it sets the scene. The sad depressing scene that gives you that scense of worry, but although it is all in b/w I think it would be ruined if there was more colour. Well thats my view!

Re: "The Twilight Zone"

Zelda games always had those backgrounds that exactly fitted the scene. Also, the grey world is not totally black and white, as some others may have seen... And the reason it is grey is not because animals cant see colours, but because the twilight zone just is...well...grey...If you've seen trailer 3, youll notice it is already grey when link changes into the wolf. So color-blindness isnt really the problem i think. I have a whole theory around it, but i wont bother you with this at the moment :p.
The minimal color added to link. I think it is done to make him more mature, and realistic. No? Correct me if im wrong, but I think its better to have a darker link, if you want a darker game...

Re: "The Twilight Zone"

Well... wolves really are not that colourful X3
Generally, they are grey - although you can get white wolves... *shrugs*
But, the wolf Link does have some blonde fur around his face and some brown tinge on his legs - which I thought was very sweet ^^

I think the grey colours suit the scene well, doesn't make you think that it is a friendly place and makes the atomosphere a lot darker. Quite effective I think
And contrasting that with the odd flickers of colour is quite nice to look at as well - makes things stand out and all that jazz.

I like the idea of the twilight realm. It is a ghostly, surreal place, and is probably full of full of lost souls (people who wandered into or were sucked into the twilight).

Re: "The Twilight Zone"

I realize wolves aren't colorful animals. That's basically what I was getting at when I said bright green fur probably wouldn't be the right direction to go. But still, I stand by what I said earlier that I think Link Wolf would benefit from a bit more color. His eyes and earrings are really only noticable from a close up of the face and his slightly tinted fur is, well, very slight.

I'm debating whether or not I'd like it if the symbol on his forehead possibly glowed a blue or green, or if they could get away with coloring the chain on his leg without making it look cheesy. Maybe give him a bandage around one of the legs. Not really sure. It's all opinion of course, but I'd like to see them give wolf-Link some more color.

Re: "The Twilight Zone"

It initially seems a good idea, but surely your eyes wil beacome distracted by more vivid colours around your playing environment. But then again when i coloured character is used, this could be a nice contrat. However im not going to pass judgement without properly playing the game.

Re: "The Twilight Zone"

I find the wolf to have enough color, though the bandage will look good too. I really look forward playing the wolf as how you control it and how it falls in to the story. I also an curious if you enter the twilight at some point and have an item and can control if you want to be a wolf or not.

Re: "The Twilight Zone"

It's funny, when I played WW and found the greyscale underwater world I thought "They should make a greyscale world". I rarely get what I want so I won't complain about it ^_^

It looks great in the trailers and I like it a lot. Makes me think of ALttP with its Dark World and Metroid Prime 2 with its similar Dark World....

Re: "The Twilight Zone"

Yeah the greyscale world is great but the name twilight makes me think. You know how link turns into a wolf whenever he enters the twilight world is just like in alttp when you enter the dark world and turn into a bunny. If any of you didn't know twilight is between darkness and light so could it be the dark realm is merging with the light world in this one?Your thoughts?

The whole 'bits of colour within black and white' has really taken off since 'Sin City' came out, i see it everywhere now, ads, music videos, now Zelda!

I'll have to try it out before I can really tell you how I feel about it. I just hope it doesn't make up a lot of the gameplay. Running around as a wolf with a weird monkey-thing on your back might get old...

Yeah, right. I hardly believe that the Nintendo crew saw Sin City and said "omg we need to make something like this in our new zelda game!!".

They probably made it greyscale because they felt that was the right thing to do with that particular setting and they happened to do it the same year as a blockbuster grayscale movie comes out..

Coincidences do happen.

Heh, sorry - but bits of colour in black and white has been around for quite a while :S I've seen it in advertisements years ago - and I've done a few pictures myself like that.

It is nice and effective - and does convey emotion and feeling in this game well rather than just being black and white with shots of colour for the sake of it.

Re: "The Twilight Zone"

I like the greyscale of the twilight world. It makes it darker, somehow. And a bit weirder, like it was in WW...
I read that dogs could only see in colours of green and blue, so the greyscale maybe just to make it feel strange, and that it looks different from the Light world.
