Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

I love the Zelda series, but one thing that has always been a problem is the fact that you constantly have to press Start and change your items. Well, for the inevitable Zelda title for the Nintendo DS, they should just make the second screen your inventory screen, and use the DS' touch screen capabilities for quick item changing. Want your hookshot? Just touch it, and all of a sudden Link has it on the top screen.

It's possible and likely that that system will be used. Hey, I would be all for it.

Re: Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

They could use the touch pad for just more than that. If the game's 3D (I hope so), they could use the touch-pad for aiming the bow or something. But anyway, yes, it could be really useful to place items in the 2nd screen. Btw, isn't Zelda DS going to be a Four Swords? Now that I'm thinkin' we won't have many items at the same time though.

Re: Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

i always thought they would use it for a map or something, but i guess items would be a nice idea as well. I dont have one yet, so i cant really say...

Since it's going to be four swords, maybe they could also have it for switching between links (assuming it'll have a 1-player option)

Like hisak just said, yes it is going to be a Four Swords game, but we don't know if it's going to be 3D or 2D. I think the DS is capable of holding Cell Shading graphics on it. If Four Swords went to 3D thats the graphics I see it using. Noting realistic like OoT or Zelda'05. For multiplayer it's nice that all you need is one cartridge hehe. So I think its still possible to have multiple weopons...but the max the Links can hold is 4 (one for each Link). As for what the touch screen would be used for (if it's mulitplayer 3D or 2D) I could see it being used as a map (also telling you where all the other Links are in the dungeon/region), and when you press start, the touch screen will become the menu inventory (items, collectables, fairies, saved maidens, save option, etc...).

Re: Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

Well when I said this I didn't really have the Four Swords game in mind, I meant a Zelda like OoT where you are in 3D and on a quest.

*Gasp* I just realized that the DS has more buttons to equip more items and make the sword permanently equipped.

Re: Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

i believe ive stated the possibilities for the DS 4swords somewhere here, so i wont repeat those, but i will say that 4swords should still be top-down perspective, for several reasons.

1. if the game is to be able to be played multiplayer with only 1 cart, the size of the program being sent to the other three DS's must be an adequate size. the DS only has 4mb of RAM. so a fully 3d game would probably be too big for single-pak multiplayer.
2. for problem soving purposes, it is easier to use the 2d perspective, as well as easier to keep track of your comrades.
3. the DS's capabilities will allow for more elaborate, and new things, such as the ability to see and hence manipulate gusts of wind, better explosions etc.

also, on a side note, some of the items in links inventory for the DS could utilize some of the DS's new features. while the face buttons could be for actions and items (say have the sword, two other items and an action) the shoulder buttons are free for say, other things, ive drawn a blank. maybe some items could utilize touch. like an ice beam may be usd to draw an ice path over a lake of lava?

That site has some great ideas, I think the Stylus should be put into more of a use, there are a bunch of DS games out there that uses the DS's capabilities for a small purpose and doesn't use it as an advantage.

Re: Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

You shouldn't expect a lot of games to be innovative right off the bat. It'll probably take a few months, maybe even a year, before we get really innovative games using the DS' powers.

Re: Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

They could put the touch screen for better use I think. Like using it for an overhead view of where your friends are, and you touch the one you wish to send a PM to.

Re: Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

i like the ideas you showed in that picture except for a few things :

if it is , and i do believe it is, a sequel to the Four Swords then it will more than likely be an overhead view because as someone said, it would have to be something easily sent over wireless networks because the ds only has 4MB of ram. If it is an overhead view game, then there would be no reason for R Targeting, also, i dont like the idea of using L for Sword, it has always been B in the console series and it the old handheld series you set it to a or b, but since this system has four buttons then i think it would work well to reverse your L sword and A button roll around. Good job though.

Re: Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

I would like to see a remake of mm and oot for the DS that utilizes the touch screen, and the dual screen.
For oot they could the item/pause menu on the lower screen, and have the option to look at a full map instead of some crummy little map that does not show chests and things of that sort. this way one could have all items available to equip instead of wasting time setting stuff to your c-buttons and having to pause and select every time you need some rarely used item and then switch back.

Are there more who would like this or am I just weird?

Re: Zelda for DS- A cool interface for changing items

Ive put my ideal interface for changing items for the DS if it were to be a four swords version on my thread Here. also, i think having MM or OoT on the DS would be cool. i think whenever you go first person, be it for bow or hookshot or whatever, the controls should change so that while the inventory screen remains on the touch screen, or whatever you have there, it is used as a mousepad sort of setup. move your thimb along the bottom screen to move where link aims on the top.
