item "Shelf life"

All the zelda games as of yet are missing one thing in regards to realisim: Real world perishable items don't spoil. In OoT, Link could drink a seven year old bottle of unpasturized milk and it would actualy help him! I think there should be (at least for items like milk or dairy products or food/some medicines) a shelf life or expiration date for items. I liked the idea in SS about potion enhancements, maybe if this idea were used there could be a way to add preservatives to items? What do you guys think?

Most games don't take place in a long enough time-frame that it should matter. It wouldn't really make sense.

I really don't want to play another game where I have to worry about things going bad or breaking.

Link usually keeps carrying milk around for a day. Unless you forget to use it. And milk standing outside the fridge in a closed bottle for a day is perfectly drinkable.

But if its in a bottle that carried medicine, fish, bugs, etc before that, something could contaminate it. Meh, its always kinda bugged me Link could keep milk for SEVEN YEARS and drink it with no problems.

It's a game with fairies, magic, and time travel and you're getting bugged because milk that heals major wounds doesn't spoil and that is unrealistic?

I just lol'd. Seriously? Why are we trying to make LoZ realistic Too many things in a game that operate on a timer is a waste of the time needed to write the code for it. I can't even imagine how annoying that'd be to let a red or blue potion "go bad". One, after dropping the rupees for it and secondly; we all know it'd happen right in the middle of a boss fight and we need it.

Looking for realism isn't why I play Zelda, I play it to escape reality. I don't want it to be just like reality -.-

Things like Lon Lon Milk expiring i could handle much better then shields breaking under one frickin' Beamos attack.

No. All the beverages inside the bottle are magical, as in the fact that it never spoils.

In SS however, hot pumpkin soup will go cold in 5 minutes. The pumpkin soup is mainly used for sidequests however. I do not want to see milk or potions going bad, unless said beverage is used only for sidequests.

Except shields break depending on the type, a Hylian or Divine Shield does not break under one attack. Shields are also upgradable and replenishible, and item durability is a much better concept than expiration periods for magical products.

7 year old milk? Who says that it wasn't preserved for 7 years along with Link?

because his SOUL was frozen, not his body and material posessions. All I'm saying is it would make sense that items would act like they would if they were real. Im not saying they should be realistic, but say you get a potion. the likely ingredients would probably be herbs, mushrooms, maybe some sort of alcohol, etc, so having it have an effectiveness of say, a week, wouldn't be too unreasonable, there could be like the generic red potion that restores like 8 hearts and lasts indefinately, or one that has volatile ingredients added that restores all hearts/magic. I just think it would be interesting, thats all.

I only had a Wooden Shield available during the first time I fought Beamoses, and those nasty creatures destroyed them fairly quickly. But I do suck at killing them. I think expiriation periods could work well depending how they are implemented. Maybe the reverse could happen as well, and some potions become more potent over time rather then going off? SS was keen to implement restrictions like stamina bars, breakable shields and limiting how much equipment you could carry. It depends on whether they can make it challenging and fun, rather then just an annoyance, which is how some people felt about the things put in SS.

It's possible Rauru drunk all his potions, and replaced them before Link woke up, or whatever he did to amuse himself for seven years. At least, I hope that's all he did to the comatose boy...

I'm thinking about the hot spring water from TP and how annoying it was to warp from the very back of the spring above Kakariko Village to Hyrule Castle Town, race as fast as I could to the southern gate, and reach the tired Goron only to find my delivery had cooled down to plain old water.

You can buy hot water from the Goron's store in the southern market strip instead. It's a lot easier.




As for milk travelling through time, it should have turned into some good ol' cheese.

The bottles were only explicitly magic in LttP.
