A Working Virtual Reality Zelda (On the Wii U)

So I saw this the other day and had an awesome idea.

Wii U - Tokyo Street Demo - YouTube

This tech demo essentially shows that the Wii U has a completely rendered environment that can be viewed entirely without the aid of the television and allows anything to be seen. Naturally, I would like to see this attached to Zelda, but I wanted to get some opinions on a thought I had:

What if Nintendo designed a pair of glasses that contain a sensor allowing them to display the image being looked at by the wearer in a way that mimicked the Wii U's controller design?

We would have a complete rendering of a virtual world we would literally be walking through. And, because the Wii U still has the Wiimote and Nunchuck, it would result in swordplay and immersion on a greater level than Skyward Sword was capable of. One of my biggest problems with the Kinect is how useless it is at registering motion on anything more than basic level, but the Wiimote has tended to work better for me. Plus, with the control stick, you could still move around without having to lean forward or anything. And I know glasses like this exist, I've seen them on planes.

This is just a basic idea. The same principle could apply to shooters like Call of Duty with a gun attachment, but you would truly be immersed in the environment. It would be a step away from television gaming, and the first real step towards the holodeck on Star Trek.

It would be nice, like a virtual boy, but with the Tokyo Street thing, you rotate the controller in any direction to see what's around.

Imagine playing Zelda like this. no more C button view for searching hidden switches or secrets.}
Running with Epona in the Hyrule Field like this.

The WiiU will have a right analog stick. Why's the camera gotta be motion-controlled?

The idea would be that this type of Zelda game wouldn't use the Wii U controller. It would use the Wiimote controls pioneered in Skyward Sword along with new VR glasses that mimic the Wii U's HD screen. It would result in a first-person Zelda and a very immersive version of Hyrule.

This idea sounds great. I've been wanted a first person Zelda, especially with the motion controls. The game would be extremely fun to play. Of course, everyone who places this would have to clear out their video game room to play it in 360 degrees. And when turning it's easy to mow forward too. As awesome and fun as it would be, I don't see it becoming reality.

Re: A Working Virtual Reality Zelda (On the Wii U)

I would disagree. I don't think the game would require much more space than the Kinect, since the Wiimote and Nunchuck will still have the same controls as Skyward Sword. The movements of the player would only factor in as much as Skyward Sword, save for the visual monitor now displaying Link's perspective in the game. Movement would still be locked to the control stick to make sure the game doesn't accidentally move you and it doesn't become a rail shooter.

Another thought I had would be the inclusion of a secondary player taking on the role of the game's assistant, similar to Navi and Fi. The second player would pilot the Wii U controller and use it to scout for enemies and items that the player can't see, like an enemy behind them. It would encourage cooperation and would allow the game to be interactive with more people. The way I see it, the second player would not have motion controls but would have independent camera controls on the tablet monitor, letting them see around Link and alert the player playing as Link to incoming threats.

If this does happen, it will probably be quite a few years if not maybe a decade from now until this could really work well. But when it does... Hellz yeah!
