A jump button

So I'm going to tell you a little story about why I want a jump button in future Zelda games.

I was at the "Inside the Great Tree" part in Skyward Sword with the hanging platforms that you have to swing, and I literally spent a half hour in there trying to get out, but I wasn't going to give up because I hadn't saved since doing the Silent Realm.

I was so close to making it out and Link fell short and plunged into to waters below. I lost it. I threw my Wii remote as hard as I could against the floor. I threw it so hard the back came off and the batteries flew out, and the Wii Motion Plus, which was firmly locked into place, came out and landed in the Christmas tree, and I'll honestly be surprised if it's not broken now.

Link can't jump. He really can't. It seems like he can jump far, but he can't.

I really want a jump button in future Zelda titles. Link's jumping abilities are ridiculous. I like the autojump, don't get me wrong. It's helpful since you don't have to press a button, but it's so annoying. Have you ever been just walking next to a cliff or a ledge and Link jumps off it? Another thing that's especially apparent in Skyward Sword, when you need to jump onto a box, but it takes forever because if you hold forward and press A, Link will push the box.

I really hope for a jump button. Or for those that really like autojump, make the jump button or autojump optional. Nintendo really needs to do something about Link's lack of jumping. Something similar to that has happened to me in every Zelda game I've played.

My liking of Skyward Sword has decreased a little bit because of that one room.

So what are your thoughts about having a jump button? Are you for? Against? In between? Like the idea of being able to chose? Discuss.

Re: A jump button

I've wanted a jump button in Zelda ever since Okami, but I wasn't bothered by autojump in SS at all, especially with dash making jumps longer.

But I still want my jump button.

Re: A jump button

SS has a jump button. Just press Z, move a little forward and then A. There ya go. Link is jumping. =3

Unless... that's not what you meant... You mean Mario style jumping right? Well SS's Jumping and running features are already a step up from previous games so you never know what Ninty has in store for Zelda's future. =)

That's for attacks, not jumping from platform to platform.

Re: A jump button

Ever since I played OoT for the first time years ago when it was released, I was frustrated with the lack of a jump button because I was too used to the Mario games.

But the more I played it and got used to it, the more I liked the idea of keeping a jump button out of the game.

I like Link having that limited ability, except for the auto jump move. I dunno it kind of makes it feel a lot more real instead of having him jump around like Mario. Besides, some of his items make up for the missing jump move, such as the hover boots in OoT, the hookshot/clawshot/grappling hook etc...

Not necessarily. If you don't swing your sword he just jumps normally.

But if you just want to jump from platform to platform then you just need to deal with the "run off cliff" way the series had since Ocarina of Time.

I say they should just finally give us a Roc Cape on a 3D game, I've been praying forever for that to happen.

I wouldn't mind full blown platforming sections either.

Re: A jump button

You had to use the Gust Bellows in that room to blow the platforms toward you, then jump quickly.

And SS does have a method of jumping, Z then A, you can jump forward a reasonable distance without attacking. It's actually useful in combat situations.

I'd love for that to happen. I'd much rather have Link require an item to jump on his own, rather than being able to jump at any given time.

Thing is, I think a Roc's Feather in a 3D game would make things too easy, with the exception of using it to clear pits that Link cannot do on his own by running off an edge.

Sounds like you have anger issues. All you had to do was use the gust jar thing.

*facepalm* Oh my God, people. Do I seriously need to write down every thing. I know you had to use the Gust Bellows.

Re: A jump button

Is it not possible to have Link dolphin-jump out of the water onto the ledge instead? I'm pretty sure that at some point those swings aren't even in there.

I just seem to recall being able to swim-jump there. Could be wrong.

Yeah, you can, but only after a particular point in the game.

Falling of a ledge wasn't too bad, because Link didn't lose hearts unless it was lava.

Annoying? Yes. But, it would be worse to have an actual jump button. Especially if you miss the timing. The chances of falling of accidentally falling off cliff are higher with a manual jump button. Hell i had trouble with Skyward Sword's mini-jump feature. I couldn't do a jump attack unless it was an accident.

Well, considering that you can have the platforms overlap each other when doing this part I think you're just doing it wrong. Manual jumping wouldn't help you.

Since I'm a Chugga fan...

"I'm going back to Mario 64! That game had a jump button!"

Jumping in Zelda would be like using an actual weapon in Mario. It's fine for specific Zelda games, but I really wouldn't have Nintendo using jumping as a concept in 3D Zelda.

SS was already too much of a platformer. I don't want them to make it worse with more jumping around.

Re: A jump button

I wanted Roc's feather ever since ALTTP.
But seriously, I hope they add it to a future Zelda 3D game where you have to use Roc's feather to figure out puzzles and everything is made harder.

I was also thinking it'd be cool if there were high up areas where you'd not only need the hookshot to be perfectly aimed, but you have to jump as well and time it perfectly. That'd be cool.

Hmm... what if there was a roc's feather tunic that allowed you to jump but had lower defence or something? That would be pretty cool.

I can imagine a repeat of OoT's water temple with the constant pausing to switch equipment if they ever did something like that.
