Should The Masks Come Back?

We all like at least one of the masks from Majoras Mask (say so if you don't) but should they come back in a future Zelda game? They were what made the game either brilliant or terrible depending on your opinion, being the reward for many side-quests so should they reappear or not? If so, which ones should be brought back, left out or added?

In my opinion most of them (excluding some such as the great fairy mask) should be brought back along side some new creations but as an optional extra instead of a main part of the game (I wouldn't want another Majoras Mask. It's already been done).

I don't think they should. Though it was a fun concept, masks were Majora's special thing.

^ I agree. I loved the masks, but I don't want to recycle them. They could bring the transformation mechanic back, but it would have to work in a completely different way (and I don't mean by using a Goron Stone rather than a Goron Mask).

I would like to see a game that shows the essence of what Link is, and show us what he can become or what he could have been through the use of transformation. I have an idea of how that could work, so I think I'll write a thread about it.

I think, they should give you some sort of collectible items, where every item gives you an unique ability, like the masks in Majora's Mask did or the rings in the Oracle games. But it shouldn't be masks or rings, because we already had that, so it should be something new.

How about a pendant? I remember seeing a pendant years ago at a jewelry store where you can accustom the rock in the middle of the pendant so that it can suit whatever you're wearing. What I'm thinking is having the same concept as the Ring Box/Rings from OoX, but this time it will be a Pendant/Magical Rocks that give you some abilities (ala OoX).

I think they should use rings again. Masks were unique to the Termina culture and they'd feel out of place in Hyrule. The rings from OoX could work in any fantasy setting without feeling out of place, plus wearing different rings wouldn't be so intrusive on the character model.

Yes, because the masks and the abilities attributed to each of the transformations were awesome.

They should keep some masks and create new ones to replace the discarded ones.

I really was hoping that Masks would become a permanent feature in Zelda games after Majora's Mask. They brought so much gameplay variety that just moving around as the different races was fun as hell.

Yes, but only a few and only in toon zelda games, also make them optional and side-quest related.

Bunny Hood: makes link run faster (or at least his train )
All-night mask: makes link perfectly focused, will not fall asleep, will not flinch from reDeads etc.)
Goron Mask: not actually transforming, but makes gorons think he's a goron
Keaton Mask: allow you to see and talk to Keatons (they ARE in this dimension, look at MC)

I have to agree with Billiam's first answer - it was special for that one game, and it became an instant classic in the Zelda series. One of my favorite Zelda games of all time.

It might have been interesting to see another game involving the masks a few years ago (nearer to when MM was released), but now I don't think they should do it.

There were masks in Ocarina of Time, and even though they did not have anything to do with plot, they still had their functions, like the Mask of Truth.

There was also a mask in Wind Waker (The Hero's Charm) and in twilight princess (the hawkeye was basically a mask).

I think I would like to see a new item that gives small useless abilities, as an excuse to fill the game with sidequests. Masks are unique to MM, as most of you have said.

Maybe they could have capes that do different things?

Like capes that set you on fire/become invincible/become invisible/let you fly/or glide/or jump/walk on water/walk on lava/not slide on ice/scare monsters away/deflect certain attacks from behind/blend in with environment/increase your endurance/and/generally/look/really/cool?

No idea what you would use them for.

With all the magical devices that appears in all of these games, someplace there has to be a huge vault full of all of Link's loot. A warehouse sized vault with masks, musical instruments, swords, shoes, and all manner of dangerous items. I'll pity Hyrule when a bad guy finds where that vault is hidden.

You know that is a good idea for a secret area in the game, like WindWaker had that art/photo gallery.

Once we complete the game, we gain access to the vault, and can rent the items out of the vault.

They should have clothes-enchanting like in Oblivion.
I made pants that set me on fire as long as I wore them, called 'em "Hot Pants."

That freedom should be in every game.
