What can the DS do for Zelda?

When I saw the demos of the DS from E3, I started to wonder how a Zelda-game could make use of the DS-hardware. I haven't come up with much yet though...

First I thought that there could be a device in the game, a megaphone or something that you use by talking into the DS-microphone, but the I though of how awkward it would feel to sitt on the bus or in the park talking to you DS...

One thing that could be really neat is to use the touch screen for puzzles that includes drawing. The bad guys could comunicate by making symbols on treestumps, houses etc. Link could learn the meaning of the symbols and by drawing symbols on different places he could trick his enemies... You could also have Link drawing magical symbols using his magical pencil...

If the second screen only is for mapas and inventory it would be quite boring I think, though I have yet to come up with an alternative use of the second screen.

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

Are you kidding? On-line? Since when has Nintendo wanted anything to be on-line.... I really can't think of anything for Zelda, but maybe display the map at the same time, that would be nice . Otherwise I really couldnt think of anything other than differen't views while you are playing.

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

It would definately give some interesting options for a multiplayer Zelda game such as four swords, where you could use the second screen to keep an eye on your teamates.

Ehhhhh... I don't like the drawing idea. How would it know what you were trying to draw if your motor skills were really bad?

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

I think that the best use for the touch screen in a zelda game is for all the stats and inventory, including map and other stuff....you could choose them from here with your finger then the item that you choosed appears in link's hand....instead of stopping the game everytime that you need another item.....and also it leaves you the top screen clear of any icons because everything is below, resulting in a more clear screen, where you can see all the action without having any icons.(D'uh)

But thats just my ideas.

I think a bigger question for a DS Zelda game is would it be 2D or 3D?

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

with this new Mario 64 X 4 coming out for the DS, I was thinking that the Zelda DS could be a Zelda 64 X 4. I know I've said this idea multiple times in previous posts but I'll say it at least one more time. The four characters you could control would be Link, a Goron, a Zora, and a Rito. Just think of the possibilities. Enough Said.

What? That's all the people you can think of? I think Majora's Mask is better suited. First the Four Sword comes into play which splits Link into four. Then each one puts on one of the transformation masks except the original Link.... then you have Link, Deku Link, Goron Link, and Zora Link. I think I've said enough under his terms.

Now for mine. All I can say is the GBA port and Four Swords with no messy links..... that is awesome... They could make Four Swords connective with the power of the wireless feature for connections.......

As for the DS itself they could port OoT (or use this for another NEW game) into a DS game, revamt the graphics a little (as in rounding the polygons) then use the other screen for maps and items, and such like that. With the touch feature picking stuff up would be a snap. Just touch what you want and presto you have it in your hands ready for action. No messy C buttons, but only two weapons, and two buttons for using them... One is the sword, then the rolling attack, obviously your shield for another, and your item of choice on the last. Utalizing all 4 buttons on the DS.... I'm pretty sure that the DS has the L and R buttons so you can use those to toggle your menus.....

My theory on a great use of a game ^

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

I think the DS could allow for a Zelda game which places a large emphasis on the Map and Compass on the touch screen. I'm not exactly sure how everything could be manipulated using the touch screen, but it could allow for a somewhat more interactive map. Perhaps the compass would allow you to see enemies on the map as well, which could place a small emphasis on strategic planning. Or viewing rooms from far away... oh the possibilities!

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

Coming to think about it, an inventory screen could be useful, the inventory screen could play a more active role, where you would have to use the inventory screen during game, you could have objects that would react to the environment, Link could bring puzzle-objects with him, he could have map-pieces that he would have to match to what is seen on the top-screen. You could have a notebook and be able to draw on your map.
To evolve my drawing idea, I would love it if the enemies comunicated with symbols writen on places or objects, by studying how the enemies behave in environments with symbols, you could learn the meaning of the symbol and use it to trick the enemies. For exemple, if you see that enemies never enter buildings with an X-mark on it, you could draw the conclusion that by drawing an X-mark on a house, you could prevent enemies from entering making the building a safe hideout.

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

That would be easy though, you could place an X on every single thing and then you would be practically safe. I'd like it so that enemies can move through rooms. You could use the map to study their patterns and strategise. It would most likely be used to chek your inventory and status, the gameplay would be a clear screen with no Icons or hearts there. I think they are going to use one of the Crystal Chronicals GBA map things.

1) Map showing the whole dungeon/area (Highly Detailed)
2) Map showing enemis positions (no walls or stuff just icons representing the enemy)
3) Map showing treasure chests (no walls or stuff just icons representing the enemy)
4) Map showing the status of the enemy and teling how much HP it has left etc.

If your motor skills were really bad, you wouldn't be playing video games!

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

Video games don't take as much motor skill as drawing. As long as they kept it to triangles and circles I wouldn't mind that much.

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

I have no idea on how the new DS will show Zelda. I hope it can be a all new Zelda with a built in multiplayer mode that can be unlocked once you complete the game once

Well yeah, the drawing would be simple. Maybe you can design the shape of your sheid or something?

Hmmm this is off topic of Zelda but the drawing just reminded me of something. Do any of you remember that game "Mario Paint" for the SNES (It was either SNES or N64, I forgot)? I was just thinking that since the DS has a touch screen and a point "pen" I think there should be a Mario Paint for the DS. ( I liked the game where you had to kill all the mosquitoes with your fly swatter )

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

I dont want it to be anything too flashy, Just a map like the one from OoT and MM will suit me just fine!

And is the DS really going to be touch screen? If so then the drawing thing you came up with would be a really good idea, But they would have to be basic because some people cant even draw the simplest of things

Re: What can the DS do for Zelda?

(on the subject of the DS, but off the subject of Zelda) It has been noted that the DS can play DS disks and GBA cartriges...does anyone think that GB and GBC cartriges can be played on the DS? If it can, then I'm deffinentally buying a DS and selling my GBA, however: when Nintendo said that the DS was a completely different system all together and it won't interfere with the production of GBA games, they didn't think about how it would interfere with the production of GBA systems themselves. Probably the DS is their way of trying to motivate the Nintendo buyers to stop buying the old (GB/GBC/GBA) and start on the new age of the DS.

What do you all think?
