PMs and 60 seconds

Hello, I have a simple little request. We all use pms, right? So why do we have to have 60 second intervals between them? I can be pming 5 people at a time, and it takes me 6 minutes to pm them all back. Why? Why do we have to wait a minute to send a second pm? Can't we make it like 30 seconds or 15? or no delay at all?

Please take this off. please.

I remember when I got 120 PM's one day.

On a lot of them it said:

"This forum requires 60 seconds between messaging. Please wait 1 second."

This is ANNOYING.

It takes me 10-30 seconds send a PM.

I'd like it to be removed, or at least lowered to 30 seconds.

I think the purpose of the rule is to keep people from maliciously flooding someone's inbox to capacity or quickly sending general spam. Makes sense, but that's just me.

EDIT: Ad bots too, I guess. Good Point, Waffles.

I believe it's because of ad bots that send out mass amounts of PMs and ads.

I agree.
I tend to PM alot during my time here, and the whole 60 second wait is frustrating. I've started opening second windows just so I can do something productive with my time while I wait.

While I understand that the time limit is there to keep people from spamming Inboxes and to keep from accidentally double-sending, I do agree that 60 seconds is annoyingly long. 15 or 30 seconds would be preferable with this under consideration.

Agreed. I beleive I had just read one PM, then I was about to send a reply when I got a second one. I went to check the new one, it was nothing big, so I sent a quick reply, and went back to the first one. It didn't take me long, due to the fact that I had already read the PM, and it told me I had like 4 more seconds 'till I could send it. -_- I mean, for the time it took me to get past the message, I was good to go, but it was annoying that it had to delay me for all of five seconds for no reason. Delays need to bo important, and they need to be somewhat long, or I find them annoying and pointless.

EDIT: Why not change the rule so that you can't spam one person? Just change the rule so that it applies to only one person your sending it to. :3

Deal with it.

In all seriousness, it's there for a reason. Blocking multiple messages meant to fill up your inbox immediately comes to mind.

60 seconds isn't that long. :/ if you're PMing 5 different people, why don't you just get their emails or IM names and talk to them there?

because that takes alot more thn 60 seconds, especially if you hppen to be pming with someone you don't really talk to that much, like a one time pm discussion that branches off from a thread. happens a lot. in fact, most of my pm conversations have been those kind.

About 60% of ZUers (random number pulled outta nowhere) have IM. I'd say under 50% of those use MSN. (8/10 posters in this thread have no listed use of an IM service, so I think my percentage is generous.)

60 seconds, when you're sending a bunch of PMs is a long time. As to why I don't use email, it's slower. People don't respond nearly as fast since here we have that nice little popup that says "New PM".

Also, IMing people isn't always a good choice. PMs allow me to say everything all at once. With IMing, I always find myself sending messages too soon and getting the wrong message across, and they can turn into boring conversations.

The way I see it, is it should take you at least 60 seconds to type something worth reading, so you shouldn't run into a problem.

There's a box up there that lets you send something to multiple people, if you're having one conversation with several people. Then there's IM messaging.

I have actually never had this problem, even when I didn't have Mod priviledges.

Having multiple IM clients open at the same time, and multiple windows of said IM clients for multiple conversations, when each time you get a new message, a tone sounds, would get very hectic.

As is, if the limit of people I could send a PM to was closer to 10 than 5, perhaps the 1 minute thing wouldn't be so bad, but at the same time, I do partake in multiple different conversations that I don't feel like letting everyone in on just to save 1 minute.

As is, it does not take 1 minute to type something worth typing if you can type 70+ words per minute. This thing took about 30 seconds to type. So not quite so icybreeze.

Meh. But even if you take the average to be 50 words per minute, you can make a PM in 10 words. That's about 10 to 15 seconds, not a full 60.

There's probably a few really small ones that it doesn't work with, but the majority, yes. Pidgin's home page says it supports
Quote:
* AIM
* Bonjour
* Gadu-Gadu
* Google Talk
* Groupwise
* ICQ

* IRC
* MSN
* MySpaceIM
* QQ
* SILC

* SIMPLE
* Sametime
* XMPP
* Yahoo!
* Zephyr
And according to Miranda's homepage, it supports AIM, Jabber, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo, Gadu-Gadu and a bunch of others. If someone you were talking to used some weird IM program not supported by one of those you could always add that one seperately.

That's because a large percentage of ZU'ers who have IM accounts don't want random noobs adding them. I'm pretty sure if you were to ask them in a mature way to give their IM names to you, they would.
