You can get around using most of the default emoticons by bolding the eyes -> :)

Or if you don't use quick reply, there's a button in miscellaneous options that says 'disable smilies in text'. If you check that box, all your smilies will show as text, not the graphics.

The real solution is to google the emotion you wanted to display, then use the first image that pops up.

Example:

"I love you. :D"

Becomes:

"I love you. "
