Too... Many... Parodies... *Chokes*

I don't know whether this thread should be here or in The Feedback, Suggestions & Questions Forums.

Is it my imagination, or are there WAY too many parodies in the Fan Fiction Forum of Art & Writing? Especially OoT parodies...

I just feel that the Fan Fiction Forum needs a bit more drama than comedy. It's actually overflowing with comedy. Does anyone agree with me?

Well... you could always, you know... make a drama fan fic if you think the forum needs more. *shrugs*

If people want comedy, they make comedy. If you want drama, you make drama. Simple as that, really

I don't control what people write. They do it because they think they're pretty and witty and gay, or some-such.

Same goes for sprite comics.

Well, may I suggest a separate sub-board for parodies then? That way we serious fiction writers won't have to scroll through so many. Another thing, the majority of those parodies are terrible. Nobody wants to scroll past half-ass scripts.

Christ, the last thing we need are more subforums.

Considering you're relatively new, I wouldn't expect you to know this, but about a month and a half ago the fanfiction section was in absolute disarray- in the whole first page of thirty topics, there were seven or eight serious fictions. The rest were all parodies, many of which were sub-par.

Looking at the first 30 topics this week, I'd say a good three quarters of them are serious fictions. So no, I do not think, presently, that serious fictions are a rarity. They currently outnumber parodies by, like, 3:1.

So, in short: no. you're wrong. there aren't too many parodies.

Now as far as attention goes- there's a different story. I'd say parodies in general do get more attention than serious fiction. But that's because they're usually a quick-fix of humor and they're generally written faster- and the amount of thinking required to read them is small, so your average short-attention-spanned teenager is less likely to get distracted and lose interest- because they're over quickly.

Not to knock ZuWriMo, but does it need two subforms? We could get ridda one o' those.

Although if we were to do that, in my opinion we should do Serious Fanfiction and General Fiction (as in not fics) together in one subforum, with Poetry having it's own once again, (I never understood why General and Poetry were sandwiched together...) and Short Attention Span Fanfiction together.

Exactly, Lly. With all these damn parodies everywhere getting all the attention, my stories and those of other serious fiction writers are left to die in the thread graveyard. It's just no fair to us. And it hurts! D:

I doubt that parodies are directly responsible for people not reading your threads.

True, but I guarantee there are way more half-ass parodies than there are serious fiction stories, Jodd. You obviously don't know how much attention parodies really get if you think they aren't directly responsible either.

Umm, Yamari, they're not. It's the opinion to choose what you read that's taking away from the serious fictions. Seeing as most of the members here (I say most loosely in this case) are young teenagers they would prefer to read something funny instead of something serious like they would at school.

Also, if you want more people to read your work, improve your writing. I haven't read your fanfiction so I wouldn't know how your style is but that's usually the case.

Anyway, to stay on topic, the fanfiction board has been flooded by parodies in the past but not a present time. And I'm sure the mods wouldn't like to recruit a new mod just for a parody section so I doubt a parody sub forum would arise at any given time in the near future.

The reason there's so much garbage in there is because there's so many garbage authors on Zelda Universe. It may surprise you that the majority of them are not Pulitzer Prize winners, but in fact snot-nosed kids like yourself.

Hey, nobody said serious fiction couldn't be funny in some areas. In fact, I'm a humor whore myself and try to put in humor where ever it seems to make sense. I agree with you in terms of improvement needs being the reason for some authors, though.

I'm not a perfect writer, but I've become good enough to where the majority of my readers love my work. In fact, I got a review for my new story at FF.net just a day after I first put it there and that person said they loved it. I'm not trying to say I shouldn't get better, only that improvement really isn't the sole reason that my writing isn't getting much attention.

Parodies definitely are a reason. Maybe not the entire reason, but definitely part.

And these snot-nosed kids get praise while the good writers on here go unnoticed.

If you don't like the insane amount of horrible parodies on the board, don't read them or better yet, make up a totally original fan fic.

I support the idea of there being a separate sub forum for parodies, which is the current majority in the fanfiction area. They undermine the hard work others have put in for non-parody fan fiction. I'm not saying parodies are bad, but they really should have their separate section since they are so numerous now. Other works are flooded over by the parodies.

While it does seem that there are far too many parodies, it's not as if you can control what people write or want to read. Obviously people are attracted to failed humor, and if the parodies were moved to their own section, those people would simply linger in that section, and problems that people like Yamari claim to have (with people reading parodies rather than her story) will still remain. Except for, rather than glancing over her story as they scroll through to find a good parody to read, they won't even visit the section where her writing his posted.

EDIT: Actually, I guess I haven't payed a visit to the Fan Fiction section in a while, and remembered it as being a *lot* more overrun with ****ty parodies. In the first two pages, I only counted eight or so, which really doesn't seem like that much considering that the rest of the threads there are for serious (or semi-serious?) fanfics. so yeah.

And I too am I bit confused as to why General and Poetry were shoved together. :/

And Yamari, the amount of people who read your work depends directly on the audience that you're delivering it to. Seeing as how ZU is overrun by a plethora of pre-teen boys, it makes sense that Zelda parodies get most of the attention. : P If you want a wide range of criticism regarding your work, I would suggest posting it in many of the other forums that you visit, as each will provide a seperate audience and, along with that, another chance at people taking more interest.
