The sudden impact on ZU.

Why is there suddenly a massive impact of newbies in ZU? Pointless threads, main forum pages getting flooded with locks..I suggested make a newbie forum where they can only post in for 7 days or make it that they can only post in main forums until their post count is to 100. Im sure many agree that there has been a sudden rush of newbies on the forums and pointless threads.

Re: The sudden impact on ZU.

It will probably go away soon. This is the summer, so n00bs are looking for stuff to do. We'll just deal with them the way we always have.

And 100 is a bit brutal. Maybe they have to get 100 posts before sarting a thread would be OK, but not everyone deserves that, I certainly would have not.

Re: The sudden impact on ZU.

*sigh* yes... and sadly, I am still considered a new member.

Mr. Fish is right, it is Summer, and kids are bored. Though, personally, I would like to see some new "older" members.
EDIT:
Perhaps in their late teens to early twenties. Most of them are around 12 and 13.

Re: The sudden impact on ZU.

I have to admit when I came I made pointless threads and they ended up locked. I think Mr.Fish idea is great, they need to have 100 posts before they make a thread.

Re: The sudden impact on ZU.

There have been many pointless threads... but if we deny new members things, the nwe will also be denying members that aren't n00bs. Why don't you make them take a quiz on ZU forum ettiquite before posting, so they now where to find the help threads and such...

Ah, that could work, because I consider myself to be quite mature for my age, with "above average" grammar skills. It wouldn't have been fair had I had to wait to make a thread when I was quite capable of creating ones that wouldn't be locked.

They could take a test on the Rules, and the Newbies' Guide. And if they passed, they could post, and create threads. Then they would understand how things work around here.

Re: The sudden impact on ZU.

Ironically, all the ones making suggestions to "tone down" the n00bs appearing on ZU are ones that mostly joined this year.

It's Internet. You can't always have everything go the way you hope they would go. Besides, this is a Zelda gaming site (or used to be). It's only logical to assume that there will be more teens than young adults here. Would you want this place to be filled with 40-something years old men and women with nothing better to do than discussing about their future family plans and career goals?

Like Fish said, it'll go away soon. It happens all the time. Summer; the peak of all activities; both good and bad ones mingling into one big happy family.

Heh.

What does my join date have to do with anything? Does that lower my stance in supporting this suggestion?

You were referring to me? I never said that.

And, no... of course I wouldn't want 40-somethings to join here. That's just creepy. I should have elaborated further and said that I would like to see some mid- to late- teens and early twenties people to join. I'm sorry about that.

I'd say make the newbie area easier to find. When I first came to this site I couldn't find it...

Re: The sudden impact on ZU.

Whenever ZU has some sort of "invasion", such threads always pop up. If you want to solve the problem, how about helping a newb and showing them the ropes via PM or IM. Complaning about it gets you nowhere and usually does no good for the complainer.

They've just discovered th internet, and decide to join here, because Zelda is the best videogame series, after all. (My apologies to the 12 -13 year-old members that did not just discover the internet of forums)
EDIT: Not all of you 12 -13 year olds are bad we just seem to be lacking on the older people here...

I wouldn't know... insaney is still a new member, and he joined in December I do believe. So it still looks like a long way to go for me... but you joined a month before that.... hmm... I would say not. Riku's_girl joined in November too, and she isn't a newb anymore.

Under normal circumstances, no. But in this case, I find it oddly ironic because 80% of the time with people making this kind of threads in certain times of the year, they just joined not too long ago. Although I don't agree with the whole quiz thing or the whole restrict new members from accessing certain parts of the forum. It degrades the whole community feeling and feels more like an elitist cult instead. Check Nox's reply, though.

I was referring to people in general. Don't feel guilty or feel out of place when I said that though.

It's Internet! No need to apologize when you didn't state things clearly. It's text messages after all.

Yes yes... it does, but it could still be an idea...

Just an observation I suppose.

But sadly, most members just don't care enough to help the other members.

You are right, however.

Haha... it's cool, I understand. I didn't feel out of place...

Again, true. But I still should have delved a bit more with what I was talking about. I have a thing with being a bit vague sometimes.

Re: The sudden impact on ZU.

A couple of things...

Like everyone said, if we denied any n00bs access to the forums, none of you would be discussing this, now would you? You would have all left the moment you joined thinking that this forum is bull for making you prove yourself.

Once again, like everyone said, it's summer, most kids are home bored all day, therefore, those who enjoy Zelda type in "zelda" into Google, and I do believe we're in the top 10 for zelda sites...

Also, your join date means crap unless you have joined in the past year and are still making posts like "OMG, i luv zelda. she iz sooooo hawt."

This is the reason we mods are here. To enforce the rules, keep the peace, and put the newbies in line. If the problem gets out of hand, we might add some more mods, no big deal.

Re: The sudden impact on ZU.

I think the adoption system would help. Get volunteers to adopt newbies for the first month or so, show them the ropes and teach them proper online etiquette. And how to use periods and punctuation marks, for chrissake.
