Combining forum with site and vice versa

Hey, I know that Lars combined the forum with the site. I was wondering how do you do that?

Thanks in advance.

I think heres how it goes;
In your manager something will probably let you make a link to something click that and enter the corrosponding answers then you have the forum attached to the site

Re: Combining forum with site and vice versa

Depends what forum system you're using and your knowledge of PHP.

I messed around with the IPBSDK (hack for Invision that lets you integrate Invision Board with other parts of a site) a bit. Google search it. I'm pretty sure there are equivilents of the IPBSDK for other forums. Also, some CMS's have built-in integration with certain forums.

There's really no complete "how to." It really depends on lots of things.

I am pretty sure that the forum has to be on the same server as the site though.

Re: Combining forum with site and vice versa

The way they are connected is that you need a forum name in order to comment on the main site. And you need a forum name, i do believe, to post things on the site as well...

AND (this is a guess, but I believe I did hear it somewhere) if you are banned one, you are banned from the other. In other words, if you are banned on the forums, you can't do any member things on the main site.

That's the connections.

Re: Combining forum with site and vice versa

He uses Mambo (www.mamboserver.com), which, if I am correct, has the option to merge forums with the site. The option seems to be an addon to Mambo, but I suppose only Lars can answer your question fully.

You may want to check out Mambo if you're looking for integration, but you should really ask/wait for Lars on this one. He most definately knows the most about it here, since he runs it.

Re: Combining forum with site and vice versa

Mambo has various extentions to make it compatable with forum software, and some people have made extentions for vB to make it compatable with Mambo.

Essentially, the 'way' it was done was by setting the vB user database as the user database for Mambo, and coppermine.

Re: Combining forum with site and vice versa

You don't really have a basic understanding of how using a premade script works, do you?

I'd suggest you read up on that before you even think about starting to modify them and tweak them to fit your own site, because it is much needed.

Re: Combining forum with site and vice versa

Uh lets see, my JavaScript sucks bad, I played with VBscript, what, once? And I don't have a freaking clue how to do PHP besides <?php and ?>. Anyway....could I tweak it with crap knowledge of JavaScript and OK knowledge of HTML?

EDIT-

I made one JavaScript that worked with help from my dad. That's all I've ever done with JavaScript.
