FEEDBACK: Facebook Connect on ZU

PLEASE read this post and vote ... this will ultimately decide whether I keep the current login structure of ZU or set it up with a Facebook Connect option, allowing you to login to the main site and forums with your Facebook account (only if you choose, of course - your current login details would still work if you don't link them to Facebook).

Should we vote on what we would want, or what we think is best for ZU?

On what you want. This is all about whether or not you think this wold be useful to you.

I thought I explained it pretty well in the post, but sure:

Without Facebook Connect, nothing changes.

With Facebook Connect, you can login and register on ZU, both the main site and the forums, with your facebook account. If you already have a ZU account, you can link it with your facebook account so that you can also login to ZU with your facebook account. You can then also use your facebook account to access the main site as well.

The benefit to all of this is that you can login to the main site, albeit only if you have a facebook account. Right now the main site is closed to registration - it doesn't use any sort of account system and there's no way to register to post comments under a frequent username.

In addition, stuff you do on ZU, both the main site and forums, would be posted to your facebook wall if you login with facebook and/or link your current account to your facebook account.

Of course, you wouldn't have to use any of this and if you don't have facebook can continue using the site as you do now.

I say no and am about to go off and vote no.

Like hell I want all of you strangers to see me on facebook because you'll all say I'm weird. Also, like hell I want all my RL people to see me on ZU because they'll say I'm weird. Oh, and that whole giving personal information out on the internet part that I am not a friend of.

It might be great for a few people, but I would be really concerned with the people who are 11 or something and decide it's a nice idea to connect ZU to Facebook where they have their adress printed and everything else in the world visible like full name and numbers. Bad bad bad idea for not only safety reasons but also because I like ZU staying ZU only and not involving the people who run around me at school or in the neighbourhood.

It doesn't use more bandwidth - it actually saves us bandwidth by routing all authentication through Facebook and taking it away from ZU's servers.

So it'll actually make ZU faster. In addition, there are no bugs to be had from using this system - I've investigated it well enough, and it doesn't cause any conflicts with the username system. When someone registers with a facebook account, they pick a username.

In addition, posting things to your wall is purely optional.

I'll vote no.

Seems like this is wasting server capacity for unnessecary things, i don't see the point of it.

Theoretically, yes. In reality, probably not.

Some people like privacy. And even if they don't use the feature, it is more than possible for a person to be tracked by their friends if they (the friends) happen to be allowing it. I can think of plenty ways to figure out who someone is on Facebook just by looking through their friends list on ZU, and as well the other way around.

Even with that said, I honestly don't mind. I like being open, and I like having nothing to hide.

I'll have to say no because of the privacy issue. I personally wouldn't care, but I know many people would.

They shouldn't have to if they only want to avoid ZUers

Captain's pre-edit: Eh, you're right, then. I haven't given a care enough about Facebook to remember anything about it.

Post-edit: No, by people looking through the friends list of the person, and finding all the people they can from that list on Facebook, and narrowing it down for potential people for the one person they really want who hasn't connected the accounts. That was my theory.

If you aren't using it, your "privacy" isn't any less private than it was before.

Let me see if I'm reading this right: Somebody can follow a link from somebody's ZU profile to their facebook page, and start finding other ZU'ers that aren't using Facebook connect. Right? Is this what we are arguing about?

Well, damn, there's a good deal of ZU folk that I have on my friends list. Gee, we didn't need Facebook Connect to do that, and guess what, everybody here is capable of putting their Facebook homepage in the URL field of their forum profile, posts, etc, etc. Thereby rendering this entire argument moot.

So it does take a more-than-intelligent person to figure out how to isolate people out of a large list. Nevermind then. It's not a huge risk.
