[Suggestion] Recent Post Notification

I first ran into this function at another forum I frequent and I think it's a very handy feature.

Ever spend a long time writing a post only to find that someone else just posted something similar to what you were going to say? This feature kicks in during those times.

If a post was made while you were writing and you hit 'Submit', instead of posting the message the window will reload and give you a notification saying "A message was posted while you were writing". Then you could open the topic in another window to see what was posted.

I think this is really useful for just about anything, especially things like Serious Discussions.

Yeah, SMF has this feature, and it is quite useful. I'll look into it.

Does it show you the other posts, or does it just say there are new posts?

If I remember correctly, it does not show the recent post. It just pops up the notification.

A window with the post could be handy though, but I'm not sure of how hard that would be to implement.

Wait, what? Don't we have a feature that updates the thread whilst you're typing, actually showing recent posts?

Only if you're using quick reply. If you have the full reply window open, you won't know.

Oh, of course, my mistake. Is their not a way to implement the same feature into the full reply window, updating the Topic Review underneath the reply box?

If there was, I don't really think it'd have quite the same effect, since it's much further down the screen, and I'm thinking that most people aren't going to scroll down to check it before they submit their reply. But who knows.

It would probably be simpler to create a notification. Although, exactly how to display the new posts...I'm not too sure.

The way the first post describes it, it sounds very clunky and unintuitive, throwing another page/window at you before making you to open a new tab if you want to see the new posts.

If you had a notification at the top of the reply screen when someone posts (just above the "Reply to Thread" title bar), which would let people know that the Topic Review has been updated, it would work quite well, I think. If that's even possible, of course.

Similarly to how it currently works if you're viewing a thread that isn't "live" but it gets a reply, I suppose?
