Deleted posts and threads visible?

Has it always been this way?
I've been in threads before where it's very obvious that posts were deleted (even some of my own), but recently I've been able to see that they were deleted, and who deleted them (for instance, Cody recently deleted a thread on this particular board. At first I was confused why it didn't have a thread title. It's just sitting there.)

Either I really haven't been paying attention prior, something changed, or something weird is going on.

Just curious, as I've never noticed this happen before.

EDIT: For clarification, I can't see what was in the deleted items-- just that they were deleted (and who deleted them, along with the reason if they leave one).

Yeah, this just popped up today. No idea why we are able to see this, but it's kinda cool at first.

Re: Deleted posts and threads visible?

I somehow doubt this is meant to be seen by all, because it would defeat the purpose of cleaning up all that junk. That's why I think something might be weird.
EDIT: It's also only visible while logged in.

Yeah, you're supposed to see deleted posts now. A step in making sure members get a better idea of why things are removed. All deleted posts should have some sort of deletion notice so you'll know why it's gone. We're trying it out.

Posts, fine, but threads? Waste of space!
Deleting threads is supposed to clean things up! Also, sometimes members delete their own posts for one reason or another-- should others really see that?

I dunno about this feature-- it only seems to be in place because the mods never want to tell individual people why their posts have been deleted.
But that's just me.

Even just seeing it for a little bit now, I'd say nay to this. It clutters up everything.

Re: Deleted posts and threads visible?

If the bot posts are bothering you, then we can just delete them differently. See, that thread in this board is gone. :3

We're still working out the tweaks in it since it's like the very first day, so give it a bit in terms of the clutter and it can easily be fixed.

It's certainly done its job so far. Tonchiki (that's you) made a "no comment" post in a discussion thread, then when you saw why it was deleted, it got you to write out proper opinions and thus increase the quality of the thread. All without having to derail the thread. :3

Ehhh, I'm still not so sure. It seems to me like the only deleted posts or threads people should see are their own. I have a feeling seeing others isn't going to solve anything.

Firstly, I would have known why it was deleted without that remaining there.
Secondly, that was a joke anyway, so it was an "everybody knows what I have to say about this, so just copy and paste my countless other rants here" post. Although I'm not sure why I was expecting so many people to understand that.

Being able to see your own deleted posts has been pretty much a unanimous agreement amongst the mods, and the reason it was never implemented by itself is that vBulletin provides no option for it. Either you see the reasons for deletion of both your post and the posts of others, or you see nothing. VB can be a pain, but still, seeing the deletion reasons of other people still has its uses in the same way that seeing other people in prison makes you think twice about crime. :P

See I didn't need to respond to that because I have responded to this before in other threads and thus everyone reading on ZU knows what my post would have said ;D

Then I'd say seeing nothing would be more efficient.
You don't even see what was in the other posts to get them deleted (and at that point they wouldn't be deleted posts anyway). You only see "reason: spam" or "reason: if you don't have anything to say, don't say anything" or something.
How exactly is that helpful or indicative of what not to post on ZU?

You're a funny guy.
My point was that the deleted post "stub" in no way affected how I went about that. Not at all (it's happened before we could see them, and I've done the same thing, going "okay, fine, here's my answer").

I like how there were threads in the past about seeing deleted post (but not its contents)... and yet it was turned down.

Why? It's about 10x smaller than a mod posting in the thread to tell people not to spam, and it doesn't affect your PPP. Yet you seem to have a problem with mods not posting in threads about their post deletions?

Mostly it's helpful to everyone relevant (i.e. everyone involved in the spam conversation). Members want mods to be more open about their deletion reasons, yet posting this takes up a lot of space (while sometimes sidetracking the thread), leaving a tiny notice about it makes the forums "cluttered", and as you pointed out, quoting the posts would negate the point of them being deleted in the first place. I guess it's lose-lose?

My point was that your post was spam because it assumed that every ZU visitor kept track of GCC threads religiously and kept records of you and your views from previous threads, causing 95% of ZUers to see your post as spam. Guess you already partly figured that out though.

Yes, for you in that one specific situation, but that doesn't mean everyone's the same as you. Without a notice, many members send confused PMs or repost the same thing thinking that the server ate their post.

Actually it was generally agreed by the feedback members that it should be done, just mods never got around to attempting to implement it.

I never said anything about mods posting in the threads (which happens about once every blue moon when the spam or flaming gets really bad). I meant that if someone wants to know why their post was deleted, they'd be able to ask the mod, since normally they don't give any sort of notice to particular people. So it's either nothing or everyone sees everything. Nothing doesn't quite work, but everything is overkill.

Everyone in the spam conversation would know why their post was deleted though, if they had half a brain. Also, in such a specific case, the mod would likely tell all involved privately to knock it off. This feature seems to be the best suited to isolated instances, which is also when it's most useless.

It was a joke to whoever got it, because that kind of thing happens to me a lot (especially lately). Geez, lighten up. Just get rid of the post if it bugs you and that's that.
Quote:

I'm going to assume that most posts that get deleted would be obviously unsuitable, and the user most likely knows it. In the case that it's not someone who usually does that kind of thing or knows better, I imagine it'd be good practice for the mod to contact them personally about why it was deleted.

But you know, whatever floats your boats. I'm just saying, I think it's an entirely useless feature.

If they can, this is bull****. The only reason one would delete their post is because they don't want others to see it. I mean, mods can see it anyway so it's not like you'll avoid an infraction or warning by deleting. When and if I delete my posts, I like it when they're actually...ya'know...deleted...of course, I stopped reading after this so I could respond so maybe people can't see them. I sure hope not.

That's what I did! I deleted the spam and then that was all! D: Was just trying to use it as an example in this thread since it's relevant to you, but I guess you keep track of all your posts and where in the thread they are, and also have a clear understanding of the rules, so it's not relevant to you.

It's still going to help a lot with Zelda section newbies etc that don't know where the appropriate line of quality is in a post and don't understand why it's gone. And the majority of users here start out like that. :3

No, no, you read it wrong. You can't actually see their deleted posts. If you delete a post it's just as safe as it always was. Difference is that people will be able to tell if you're constantly bumping your art/sig thread to the top with delete-reposting because a little notice will point out that you did delete it. :3

( Also puts a stop to those people who delete their posts and then claim that they never made them to get the other person in trouble for double posting, you know who you are >:[ )
