Suggestion: adding an acronym tag

I don't know if this has been suggestion before (I tried searching for it, but nothing), but is there anyway an acronym tag can be added to the list of BB code tags? It would be nice because there are so many acronyms, and I want people who don't necessarily understand the acronyms to know what they mean. Its annoying to do this without this tag, however, as it clutters the post.

I think what he means is that you would use it on an acronym, IIRC, and when you hover your mouse over it a tooltip shows the meaning of the acronym, if I recall correctly.

The point of acronyms is to shorten words. What's the point if you're going to type in the full meaning and BB code? :P

There are plugins that automatically detect acronyms. In fact, we have one, it's just not enabled. Maybe I'll enable it...

What would it do for acronyms which mean multiple things (like FPS)?

Yeah, exactly. It's the tag that's important and doesn't specifically have to be used for acronyms. The point is that displays a tooltip, which I think would be a nice feature. For instance, as you can see in my sig, I have my timeline that's written in with Acronyms. It would be nice to provide tooltips to show new people who would be new to theorizing what those mean. I started out as one of those new theorists and when I browsed the forums, it was frustrating to not know what those mean. That's just one use that has come to mind lately. The tag itself could be used for much more.

ZU should have a feature you could possibly enable to make certain phrases into acronyms, like ames of video games, federal departmends, and orgnizations.

There is a thread which has all the major Zelda related (and some others) acronyms listed and thier meaning.

It would display whatever is the most common usage of the acronym. I mean, it's really not that important how it interprets things - it's 90% right and useful with odd terms like AFAIK, IIRC, etc.

That said, I've never actually used it on ZU. Just seen it used elsewhere. I'll debate turning it on over the weekend.

you can just hop over to IRC and type .acr xyz

if it's that crucial.

Ah. I do see problems though, particularly the example I gave of FPS, which is very context-dependant. IIRC, when I say "IIRC" I use the "if it really counts" meaning, and when I see "AFAIK" I read it as "And for all I know" rather than "as far as I know". Unfortunately though, to my knowledge, both of these uses are in the minority.

So yeah. It might result in some confusion.
