Post The Legend of Zelda: Knil's Revenge

This takes place after TMC, before WW. Enjoy! The story isn't completed yet, but you are free to leave comments, as long as they contain no swearing (at all!) or inappropriate things for anyone under 11.

Chapter I
Knil

Hyrule was a peaceful, prosperous land. It was perfectly normal in most ways, and a great many people lived there. And it had a legend. A legend of the great evil, Ganondorf, that swept over the land. But a hero came. He battled the evil and drove it away, and the land was prosperous for many years after that. But soon, there was lots of gossip and rumor, saying this:
“The Hero is back.”

* * *

In a small village called Kokiri in the vast land of Hyrule, a boy, no more than eleven, was finishing up sword training with his grandfather. “Ha, ha, my boy, you did it! You’ve earned the rank of Swordsman!” The boy cried for joy and ran to embrace his grandfather.
Suddenly, a voice said, “Don’t celebrate just yet.”
The boy turned and said, “Who are you?”
The figure was tall with blue hair, and wore dark blue clothing with a long robe. He looked evil. “I am Knil. I have unfinished business with you.”
The grandfather stepped forward to guard the boy “What do you mean?” he asked as he reached for his sword.
“My origins do not need to become known to you,” Knil stated plainly. “All you need to know is that I’ve come to take over.”
This was all the motive the boy needed. He had the urge to charge Knil, but his grandfather held him back. The boy then cried; “Why did you come here?”
“Oh,” Knil explained, “You’ll find out soon enough…Link.”
Knil faded, then disappeared. Link, now looking deep in thought, could think only of two courses of action: either be a coward and go on with life (which sounded much safer to Link), or investigate further who this Knil person was. Having decided, he grabbed his sword and rushed to the door. “Hey!” the grandfather said. “Where are you going?”
“To Aria’s house,” Link replied. “Maybe she’ll know some legend related to what just happened.
“Then take your sword,” The grandfather commanded.
“My sword?” Link gasped. “You mean…”
“You’ve earned it. You’re a Swordsman now, anyway. Right?”
Link thanked his grandfather and set off on his way.
As he ran out the door in his green tunic, the crisp autumn air tinged at his nose. He then quickly realized that he had no plan whatsoever. Link sat down to plot a course of action, and decided to see his best friend, Aria. Maybe she would know who Knil was.
He set off to Aria’s house and saw Mido The Annoying, as people called him behind his back. Mido had always been nosy, and if you needed privacy, you shouldn’t go anywhere near him. Mido was 14 years old, but was extremely short, and was barely as tall as Link. He had blond hair, and was the slightest hint pudgy.
“Hey! Link! Did anything interesting happen to you lately?”
“No,” Link lied. It seemed Mido was always on his case, and he didn’t need Mido to tell the whole world about Knil. “Are you sure?” Mido asked. He had a way of making a story come out of you, even if there was nothing to tell.
“Get off my case, Mido,” Link said. “I’ve got no story.” “Fine,” Mido said, and stormed off.
Link arrived at Aria’s house and knocked on the door. “Who is it?”
“It’s Link.” The door opened. “Hi, Link. What’s with the sword?”
“Can I come in?” Link asked. “I’ll show you.” They walked in and sat down. “So, again, why do you have your sword with you?”
Link explained what had happened, and Aria seemed surprised. “My father is really into the old legends,” Aria said. “But I’ve never heard of anyone named Knil.”
“Well, who do suppose you should go to when someone appears in your house, says he’s ‘come to take over’, and disappears?” Link asked, frustrated. “You might be able to talk to the town doctor,” Aria said. Link gave her a look, and she quickly added, “He is also the town elder.”
“Maybe…” Link speculated. “Yes, that’s a good idea.
“Sure. My father should return soon, though, and he doesn’t like guests. He thinks they’re too noisy, so you can’t stay too long. Anyway, what do you want to do?”

* * *

“Well, I think it might have been just a dream, Link.”
“But, sir,” Link pointed out, “I distinctly remember going to Aria’s house, then I came here. And I’m here talking to you, aren’t I?”
“Well, I don’t know, Link. But I did look at one legend, and it said:

‘Of the Triforce of Power there comes a legendary secret

A secret of multiplying thyself and that self gain the Power once again

A secret multiplying in power, then to wreak havoc once again

A secret of legendary power.’

You see, Link…you know the Legend of the Hero of Time?”
“Yes,” Link replied.
“I think it might be hinting that Knil is Ganondorf, but you probably just had a hallucination.”
“Okay,” Link said. “Goodbye.”
“Good day,” the doctor waved.
“Wait,” Link said. “Do you…think you could read me the rest of the legend?”
“Of course. It goes like this:

‘The spawned shall be hiding out in the castle

Waiting for the right time to strike

Altering itself to its original form

It shall overthrow the monarchy and shout with pride

That it is the ruler of the kingdom.

But a hero will come to battle the evil

As if time itself has repeated.’”

“Thanks, sir.”
“No problem. Bye!” Link left, feeling a hint confused. Could evil really be coming to Hyrule?
Probably not. Link decided that he would go to his hideout that he and his younger brother, Gleet, had built in the yard. It was Link’s favorite place to get something off his mind. He walked to his hideout and saw Mido again. Oh, no, Link thought. Not him again. He kept walking at a normal pace, hoping Mido wouldn’t notice him.
It worked. Mido decided to annoy someone else, who, as Link made out, had a story. Phew.
When he got there, he found that Gleet was there. “Wow,” Gleet exclaimed. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“I’d rather not talk about it.”
Chapter II
The Dream

That night, Link had a dream about a girl, seemingly in Hyrule Castle. He heard her say; “Link.”
“Who are you?” Link asked.
“I, I…I can’t tell you right now. The fate of Hyrule, possibly the world, depends on it.”
“Okay, right, right,” Link said with a hint of confusion in his voice. “The fate of the world? Are you sure?”
“Yes,” the girl said, “But I haven’t much time. You must go to Hyrule Castle immediately. Again, the fate of the world is at stake.”
“Well, I’m eleven. How will I explain to my grandfather?”
“Check the mail. There will be everything you need.”
And with that, Link woke up. How weird, Link thought. But I might as well check the mail. As he lumbered out of bed, he hollered; “Grandpa! I’m going for a walk!” This rather loud statement was met with a louder snore. “Okay,” Link mumbled to himself.
He walked outside and walked lazily to the mailbox. He found the slot with his name and saw a letter. He opened it and found that it, oddly, was watermarked - with the Royal Family’s seal! “Wow!” Link quickly clamped his hand over his own mouth. If anyone found out, I’d have Mido all over me… He took it in hand and started to read.

To Link:

If you are reading this, it means you must come to the castle now. The enclosed stone is a Gossip Stone, a tool long used by my family. Take it out and you’ll see how it works.

If you have encountered a tall, dark clothed man with dark blue hair who calls himself Knil or called you by name without you revealing it, it is imperative that you come to the castle,. Make it appear as if you are spying, and when caught, you will be taken to court in front of the King, my father. Show him the other letter enclosed and he will take you to see me.

Princess Zelda
(The girl from your dream)

P.S. I will explain more…once you open the Gossip Stone.

Link, realizing who it was from, tucked the letters in his pocket. Wanting to know more, though, Link opened the package to find a teal stone with a faint aura glowing around it. Suddenly, a voice said, “Link? Are you there?” Link jerked his head to attention and looked around, but there was no one there but himself.
He heard the voice again. “Hello? Link? " He looked into the stone, and saw who was, presumably, Princess Zelda.
“Zelda?” Link asked. “Is that your name?”
“Yes…and yours is Link, right?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Now, go to the castle, and hurry. We have no time to lose.” Link, a bit reluctantly, took off to the castle. And not a bit too soon…

* * *

“The fools,” Knil said, his voice bouncing off the inner walls of Hyrule Castle. Just a few seconds earlier, he had been walking up to the castle, but the guards were too faithful to the king, and clung to his orders.
“I’m sorry, sir,” Guard One said. “You must have a permit to enter.”
“Or you could fight us,” Guard Two chortled. “It’s been slow lately.”
“I’ll take number two,” Knil said, drawing his sword, the Sword of Shadow. It strangely resembled the Master Sword, but the handle was red, and it had a black and red glow. It befitted Knil perfectly.
Both hands on his sword, Knil charged the guards. Not expecting their bravery, though, he slowed. The guards were not moving. “Very well,” Knil said. “You shall die with honor.”

* * *

Link walked up to the drawbridge between Hyrule Field and Hyrule Castle Town and looked around. I must be going in the right direction, Link thought. I see the castle.
He walked into the market and covered his ears. “It’s really loud, I know. Want some bombs?” Link turned and jumped back. It was an extremely large, brown creature, unquestionably a Goron. Link was fiercely intimidated by the creature’s large size, but managed to stammer, “N-No thanks, s-s-sir.”
Still shaking from his encounter, Link walked up to a sign and read:

<--- Hyrule Castle
No Admittance Without Permit!

Link walked down the path, wondering why he had even come this far. Even if that was Princess Zelda, how did he know it was all that important? Maybe it was a prank? No, she knows too much, Link thought. Link walked down the path, unsure about it all.

Chapter III
The Castle

Link strolled up to Hyrule Castle, looking for a way in. The only way Link could see was the main entrance, which, oddly, had no guards. The direct approach is the best approach, Link thought, and walked in. He walked into the main hall and stood in awe. This is nothing like back home. The amazing decor, the carpets. Even the temperature is just right. Link peered around the wall, only to see some guards.
He crouched down and slowly crawled along the edge of the wall, hoping the guards would notice. They did.
“Ah-ha,” One guard cried. “An intruder! Seize him!” Link turned around, pretending to try to escape, but he was tackled, surprisingly hard. They bound his arms and legs quickly, and hauled Link away.

* * *

“Gahh!” Link exclaimed, his words echoing off the walls of the cell he was just thrown into. He stood up, dusted off his tattered pants, and contemplated the position he was in. He thought maybe it was a dream. “Oww!!” Link shouted, his fingernails jabbing into his own hand.
Scratch that.
His eyes drifted over to the corner of his cell and he saw a strangely familiar girl, seemingly crying. “Zelda?” The girl nodded almost invisibly and continued bawling. Link, for some unknown reason, felt a connection to the girl, and started sobbing too.
“That man,” Zelda bawled, tears streaming down her face, “That man is not my father.
“And honestly,” she whimpered, barely audible, “I don’t know what’s going on.” This quite depressing statement was followed by another flood of tears by both children.
Some minutes later, they quit crying and started planning. “I know a bit of magic,” Zelda speculated. “I might be able to get the keys from a passing guard.”
“But then what?” Link pointed out, his eyes still red from crying. “Once we get out of the jail, where do we go? There are guards everywhere!”
Zelda did not reply, having lost herself in thought. Some seconds later she came out of her trance-like state and replied, “Like I said, I know some magic. I’ll confuse a guard for a moment. Long enough to escape. Wait, here comes one now.”
The guard, cheerfully whistling a happy tune, did not notice as his keys were slowly lifted off his belt…without hands taking them. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥Clink! Zelda lost her focus and the keys plummeted to the ground.
The duo of Link and Zelda didn’t dare breathe. The guard stopped, but his helmet kept out most noise, and he figured it was ambience. Link, with one swift move, reached out, nabbed the keys, and brought them into the cell without a sound.
“Got ‘em,” Link whispered. The guard left, and already Link was fumbling to get the bars opened.
“There,” Link said. “Let’s go.” The duo left the jail and started out on an adventure neither one would ever forget.

* * *

“You what?!” The king’s voice boomed throughout the room.
“I-I’m sorry s-s-sir, it’ll never happen again, s-sir.” The guard stuttered over himself in fear of what would happen next.
“Too bad. Your presence is no longer needed.” And in one brisk swing of his sword, slayed the guard.
“You,” The king said, pointing to a legion of guards that swiftly stepped back. “After them. They are a catch we cannot afford to release. You, out,” He said, pointing to his servants, “I need some time alone.” The men walked quickly away, fearful. “Now,” the king said, “To wait.”

* * *

Zelda and Link gasped for breath, entering the Kokiri village. “Wow,” Zelda panted. “I didn’t think I could walk that far in a dress.”
“Just a little further,” Link urged. “I just know he can help us.” Zelda muttered something in Hylian, and trudged on into the night.
As they walked toward the house of the town doctor/elder, Mido saw them and quickly walked over. “Hey, Link. Your grandfather’s been looking for you. Where’ve you been?”
“I just went for a walk,” Link replied, half-telling the truth.
“Well who’s this?” Mido questioned, nodding toward the princess.
“None of your beeswax,” Zelda snapped, grabbed Link’s arm, and walked off to get some answers.
“Geez. No need to get snippy…”

* * *

They entered the elder’s house, and Link asked, “Doctor? Are you there?”
“Lord Knil will be pleased…”

Chapter IV
Trust

Link’s legs started to quiver. Who had said that? It sounded an awful lot like the doctor. The large, open area and the dim light made it all the more scary. Zelda didn’t feel exactly brave either, even with the bow and arrows she had picked up from a store on the way from the castle.
Link, for the second time that day, didn’t dare breathe. He didn’t dare move, either. But someone had to break the silence, and Zelda sure wouldn’t. “A-Are you sure that you read me all of the legend?”
My little boy,” The elder replied as he stepped into the light. “If I had told you all of the legend, you would have become bored.”
“Well, what about saying something about ‘Lord Knil?’” That was Zelda, completing the transformation of the room into a battlefield of words.
“And you, dear girl, that was just…an opening for an appointment. Yes, an appointment. A lord from another land was wanting to see me.” Zelda did not look convinced.
“Either way, can we look at the legend?” Link persisted. “It’s an emergency.” He stepped toward the table with the scroll on it.
“I can’t allow you to do that,” The elder replied in a less friendly voice. Link made a fake lunge for the scroll, then ran around him, but the elder was too quick. He grabbed Link and threw him to the ground.
“What happened to you?” Link inquired.
“Lord Knil has employed me to bring you to him, if you must know. Not that you will live to tell about it.” A dark fog filled the room, covering the elder. Link and Zelda stepped back, scared out of their wits.
The smog evaporated, exposing a large creature. “I am Brinswith,” the monster of an animal roared, “And I am the end of your little masquerade. You want the legend? Come and get it!”
With a moment’s hesitation, Link took his sword out of the sheath and charged him. “Cover me, Zelda!” He yelled as his sword met Brinswith’s flying claws. Zelda looked at Brinswith for a second, then ripped out an arrow, pulled back, and let her rip.
The arrow simply bounced off Brinswith’s abdomen; he didn’t even seem to notice. “Zelda!” Link hollered while defending himself. “It didn’t help!”
“Well, what do you want me to do!?” Zelda yelled back.
“I thought you knew magic!” Link replied.
He’s right, Zelda thought. I could… Zelda whipped out another arrow and tried to remember the spell. “C’mon…c’mon…yes!” The tip of the arrow started to glow. A perfect Light Arrow, Zelda smiled as she took aim.
She let it go, and it pierced the skin just a little, but enough to send Brinswith howling. “Aaaaagghhhhh! Hmph, a very good job, princess,” He said, practically spitting out the last word, “but you’ll need more firepower to defeat me.”
He lunged toward her, growling ferociously. At this moment, Link had a sudden burst of courage. Link ran to Brinswith and plunged his sword into his enemy’s head from the side. “Arooooooooooooooo…” He howled and fell down, but with his last bit of strength, threw his arm over his side and clawed Link at the stomach before he disappeared in a shroud of smoke.
Link made some unintelligible noise and collapsed. Blood was streaming down both sides of his body. “I just knew today would be great,” Link said, making a horrible attempt at a joke before losing consciousness.

* * *
“I’m sorry, m’ lord,” Brinswith explained to a large man wearing very fancy clothes. “I leapt at the girl, but she was too quick and disappeared,” he lied.
“And what of the boy?” the man asked.
“Well, sir, um…you’d be surprised how…I think…” Brinswith stumbled over himself, defeated.
“I’ve heard enough. You are davaadi.” That, reader, is the Hylian equivalent of fired.

OOS: Davaadi is something i made up. i don't know if it's canon or not...

Link could, very faintly, hear a voice. His head ached horribly, and his torso was unspeakably pained.
“This better work,” Zelda said, kneeling next to him. They were still in the doctor’s office, and Zelda was trying to be a doctor. Link could hear her muttering to herself. Eventually, she threw her hands up and rambled off some Old Hylian.
“Amazing something or other, heal this dude, cuz he’s, like, totally awesome.”
Almost instantly, Link felt better, and he felt the scar along his stomach. “Why didn’t you do that before? Link questioned.
“If you’re gonna be ungrateful about it, I’ll…well, I’ll do something.”
“No, no, no,” Link said, sitting up. “I was just wondering.”
“I just didn’t remember until then,” Zelda replied simply. “So…what next? This is kind of a new experience for me.”
Link chuckled softly, speculated, and said quietly; “We should see grandfather.”

Chapter V
Convincing Grandfather

“I don’t know…”
Link shifted nervously as Zelda said, “We’ll be really careful.”
A futile response normally, but what they did not know was that Link’s grandfather had to stop himself from yelling “Yes! Yes! By all means, yes!” But instead replied calmly, well, I suppose it’d be all right. Why, when I was your age-” He broke off.
Very strange, Link thought. Not only was he not surprised by Zelda, but he let us go! What is the world coming to?
The duo was just about to thank the grandfather when they fell in to a hole.
A deep hole.
A deep hole.
A seemingly endless hole.
“A portal!” Zelda cried as the hole ended and they found themselves above a deep wood.
But first there was the falling.
Then the realization.
Then the impact.

“Uh..…where are we?”
