The legend of Zelda: the next generation

12 year old Atom was having the time of his life. Everything was perfect. His grandfather, Link, was at home, the sun was shining and he and his friends were jumping on a giant bouncy mushroom that they found. And today was his birthday. But best of all, today his dragon egg was hatching. He just could not wait to watch it happen. Then his grandfather rang the dinner bell. He ran home excited and hungry. When he got there his 90 year old grandfather was just setting out Atom's bowl of stew; although, he did not seem to share Atom's happiness. After dinner Link told Atom to come into his room. As he came in Atom nearly exploded with happiness. His dragon was hatching. When he looked at the spot where he incubated the egg for so long, the egg was nearly open. Then it just burst and a black baby dragon with a red belly popped out.
“What will you name him?” said his grandfather. Atom hadn't thought about a name in all of his excitement so he had to think awhile, but he finally came up with a good one.
“I think I will name him Tarragon.” he said.
“Do you think or do you know?”
“I know.”
Atom walked up to his dragon and held out a chunk of meat. Tarragon gobbled the meat gratefully and stumbled to Atom.
“Atom,”
“Yes?”
“I have some bad news. I feel bad saying this on a day like today but it must happen. Our land is being poisoned by evil. Do you remember the stories that I told you about the hero that saved the land from the evil Gannondorf?”
“Yes.”
“Well even if he was sealed away he has had a son and his son has his father's power. His son's name is Kryllic. And you must stop him.”
“But why me?”
“You are the next hero. I was known as the hero of time before but I am now only a wise sage. Age has made me weak, but wise. I can help you get started but you must pull through the rest.”
Atom thought about this for a moment.
“But I do not even have a weapon.”
“That is where you are wrong. Follow me.”
Atom walked with him into a different room and saw his grandfather open a compartment that Atom had never seen before. Inside was a sword with twisted deku tree wood for a handle and cross guard with a strange rock in the hilt. The blade was wide and just the right length for him. The sheath was blue with golden decorations and a back strap that fit him perfectly. He asked about the stone and his grandfather said, “The stone is known as a gossip stone. It will allow me to talk to you even if you are far away.” As he put on the sword, he felt that he just could not do this. He imagined himself fighting a superbly powerful being all alone. As f he read his mind his grandfather said,
“You will not be alone. You will have a companion.”
“Who?”
“Tarragon will travel with you. He is a special dragon. The one that only comes every thousand years.” There was a long pause of just thinking and wondering. Then Link finally said,”well off to bed with you. You will begin training tomorrow and you will leave the next day.”
“But where will I go?”
“Why to the royal family of course. Now sleep.”


Atom could not sleep that night. He lay awake with his eyes open thinking about the task before him. He kept rolling over to see the sword. He did not see how a twelve year old boy could destroy someone as powerful as Kryllic. But he finally found comfort in the steady breathing of Tarragon. He remembered his grandfather saying that he was a special dragon. He found comfort in that thought and went to sleep.


The next morning, Atom expected his grandfather to put him to hard work with his sword but instead his grandfather told him to go to the festival which came around every year. He also gave him a red rupee to spend there. Excited but confused, he ran to the town of Hyrule. When he was there he had a ton of fun with friends and he even bought some sweets. But when he passed a stand with two warriors they called to him and as he went over they introduced themselves.
“I am Xavier.”
“And I am Otum, and we are brothers that love to fight. A while ago your grandfather asked us if we would train you in the way of the sword. We agreed of course because this just gives us a chance to fight. Come on back and we will begin.” So this is what his grandfather meant by training him at the fair. As he walked behind their stand he found himself in a large secluded dirt field.
“Show us your sword and I will train you.” As Atom did so, Xavier pulled out his sword and slashed at him. Atom jumped back quickly. “Good. Now I will teach you the most important thing about sword fighting. Do not treat your sword as a tool. Treat your sword as an extension of your arm. And when you swing, let the sword guide itself to its target.” Atom did so and he actually felt as if the sword were part of him. He tried again and the sword guided itself through the air smoothly. But on the last time he tried his swing he gave Xavier a scar to remember. It was shallow and long but luckily it did not bleed much. He just casually wrapped his arm with a bandage and said that he would tend to it later. Just then another figure walked into the scene. She was as tall as Atom but as soon as he saw her he knelt in respect for he knew who she was. She was princess Aira, the daughter of queen Zelda and one of Atom's close friends. But Xavier did not know her and stood while Otum walked up to her.
“Little girl, you need to turn around and go the other way,” he said. “We big strong men have a little work to do and we do not want to be interrupted by one of your little tea parties.” Just then with incredible speed, her bare foot lashed out and struck Otum in the face. When Otum did not stir, Atom realized that he was out cold. “Well I guess that you should learn to hold your tongue, Big Strong man.” She said with a sarcastic tone. Xavier looked at Atom with a wary glance and knelt like him. The princess then walked away. When she was gone Xavier stood up and continued with the training. After a few hours Otum woke up and walked over angrily to Xavier and Atom. When they saw his face they were doing the best that they could to not burst out laughing. “What is so funny?” He asked.
“Nothing brother, I just did not realize that you got a tattoo of a foot on your face.” Then Atom just burst out laughing and could not stop until his stomach hurt and tears rolled from his eyes. After that he traveled home, stopping to buy a sharpening stone for his sword. When he was home he told his grandfather about his adventure and then went to feed his dragon, after which he went outside and played with.

That night he laid awake pretty satisfied with his life but in the back of his mind he remembered that his quest started tomorrow. He wished that tomorrow would never come, but of course, it did, and with it, his quest.

His grandfather woke him up early that morning and he groggily ate a small breakfast of fruit and milk. Then he woke his dragon, practiced with his sword and left. He was stopped by his grandfather in their front field.
“You need to be careful Atom. Go to the royal family, talk to no one and come here.” Said his grandfather. Atom left with a nod and his adventure began. His pack was filled with three day's worth of food for him and his dragon. His sword was newly sharpened and his morale was fairly high. After he was almost to Hyrule dark clouds started to form and a fine dim mist floated to the ground. This lowered his morale pretty far. He felt like he was small and vulnerable. He finally saw Hyrule castle but something seemed wrong. After awhile he realized what it was. One of the towers was missing. When he got to the gate he found no guards and it was open. Confused he walked inside. As he did so he found that the guards were not guards anymore. They were mutated beasts lurching around with guard armor on. And sure enough, one of the great castle's towers had crashed to the ground. Its bricks were scattered everywhere and a row of houses were destroyed. He then realized that some of the beasts were also villagers. He saw them attacking Otum and Xavier. He was relived that they weren't mutated. He ran to join them.












He got there and immediately pulled out his sword. He was not merciful because he did not know them and he disliked them anyway. After he killed many he asked about the royal family. Otum had no idea but he went to look in the fallen tower rubble. Atom rushed inside the castle and began his search. With the fallen sections and the many strange beasts the castle was like a puzzle. When he got to the last room to search at he was sad for he found no one. He was in the throne room and something did not seem right. Then he noticed that the king's throne was crooked. Even in a problem like this the king wouldn't leave this room a mess. He then also noticed that near the throne on the plush carpet there were slide marks that indicated that the throne had recently been moved. Atom slid the throne and found a passageway. He followed it into a dark tunnel. He wandered in this place also and there were many strange creatures in the area. The tunnel eventually opened up into a cavern and in the center was the royal family. He asked to escort them out and the king refused. He did not trust anyone besides his family any more. But when the queen saw him she agreed. He then noticed that his grandfather had saved her many times and he was wearing clothing that his grandfather had worn when he was the hero of time. He then escorted them out and was filled with new hope. There was only one thing that worried him. Princess Aira looked darker in skin color than she had when he saw her before. He just made himself think that it was the cavern light and continued on his way. He made it to the courtyard and he was stopped there. The king was angry and would not go further. Even Queen Zelda could not get him to calm down. He began screaming and yelling and Atom noticed that his skin was changing to a dark pale color and spines were growing from him. His king's clothes were tearing off and showing armor underneath. He became a giant version of the other mutated beasts. And Atom was forced to fight him.

The rest of the royal family hurried to the side of the courtyard and hid in the many bushes .He began the fight just watching for a weak spot in the enemy, just as Xavier told him to do. He watched closely but there was not much because two other beasts brought the mutated king a gigantic sword and a bow and arrow with bombs. He then noticed that after the beast spun around with his sword, he seemed to have a dizzy spell for a few seconds. Atom then saw a crack in his back armor. He then found out what he needed to do. The next time that happened he rushed behind the beast and slashed as hard as he could at the crack, and to his surprise, the crack got larger. He new that he had to repeat this but the beast was already up. The beast spun again and Atom repeated the process. The beast was learning now. It started using its bomb arrows to attack. After the first arrow Atom was knocked off his feet. He was thrown into the bushes near Zelda and Aira. He jumped back out and began dodging arrows. After a wile the beast spun again and Atom slashed once more. Then the armor shattered. Atom now had his chance to slay the beast. The beast then jumped up and sent out many smaller beasts. Atom plowed through these easily and slashed at the beast. He caused many wounds and gashes but none that were fatal. He began to lose hope that he could do this. After another rush an idea popped into his head. On his next chance to attack he, instead climbed the vines on the castle wall. The beast gave him another chance but instead of slashing, he jumped off and stabbed his blade into the beast’s forehead.

The beast fell to the ground and laid there without breath. After a while Atom got the royal family from the bushes. He noticed tears coming from both of their eyes. He silently escorted them to his house in the woods. He also noticed again that Aira’s skin was a dark color. When he got to the house his grandfather was seemingly not surprised. After some quiet dinner, Atom asked the royal family about Kryllic. They said that kryllic was the one that attacked the castle. The queen said that he sent a black cloud carrying a shadow plague. The plague affected the guards and the king which explained the beasts. She also said that the princess would soon mutate as well. She said that for Atom to prove himself as a hero he needed to go to the waterfall of wishing with the princess to cure the shadow plague. Atom simply nodded and woke up his dragon.
“Come on, we have to go or you will mutate.” Atom said to Aira and they left together. He began his long journey with a map that his grandfather gave him. There was very little talk the first day.

The princess was confused in this whole journey. She seemed to have a black fog over her mind. She could not think. She just followed the dragon boy because he had a good heart it seemed. He made her feel safe.

Atom made it to the waterfall on the third day. He did not know what to do. He had thought that he had failed when he noticed something. He saw a dark spot in the water fall. He then realized that there was a cave behind the waterfall. He then began to talk to his dragon. “you need to help Aira fly into the waterfall. I am trusting you to do this.” Tarragon just grunted in approval. And so he flew up and grabbed Aira's shoulders and began to flap his wings very hard. Luckily she was pretty light and he was able to lift her just barely. He then slowly flew her into the cave. Atom then jumped over the river and into the cave. He saw Aira standing there with a blank look on her face and Atom saw Tarragon laying on the ground breathing hard . Atom gave him a rub on his belly. “Good boy.” he breathed. He then looked at his surroundings. He was in a cave that was very damp and torches with purple flames lined the walls. Atom felt a evil feeling coming from the cave. He then carried Tarragon and began walking deeper into the cave. He then saw a pool of dark and murky water. He then walked closer and then a evil voice filled the air.
“None shall enter and live.” then a dark silhouette of a person with a single red eye appeared. “You will now meet your ends.” it said as dark tendrils began to reach for them.
“wait! What can we do to make you spare us. We only want to use the healing powers of this well.”
“none shall use the powers of this well that the great Kryllic has given me. But if you can beat me in a mind game then I might reconsider. But be warned, no one has beaten me in over a millennium.”
“i accept your challenge.” He moved to put Tarragon and Aira at the side of the cave but dark tendrils grabbed them away from him and suspended them in the air.
“They will stay with me and will die if you lose. You should be grateful that it is not you. Let's begin.

here is a riddle. Answer correctly and you go to the next. Answer a number of riddles correct and you may use the healing power.”

At night they come without being fetched,
and by day they are lost without being stolen.

Atom thought a while. He had heard riddles like this from his grand father, but he came up with an answer. “Stars!”
“correct.”

I never was, always am to be, no none has ever seen me nor they ever will. I will never come.

Once again, Atom came up with an answer. “tomorrow.”
“correct.”

The beginning of eternity,
the end of time and space,
the begging of every end
and end of every place.

Atom had never heard this before and thought a long time. He then made a guess. “Destruction.”
“Incorrect. The correct answer is the letter “e”
Atom then heard screams of pain from Tarragon and Aira.
“wait!! please don't hurt them, I will make another deal with you, if you can answer a riddle then I will die to but if you cant then you must die.”
“Deal. What is the question?”

What statement is never true but never false?

The being thought a moment and the eye seemed to pulse. It then came up with an answer. ”no statement at all.”
“no. the answer is: this statement is false.” Atom said with a smile.
“what?! NOOOOO!!!!” screamed the creature as it folded inward on itself then exploded into a black cloud. His friends fell onto the rock on the side of the pool. He noticed that Aira's dress was slightly torn from mutating and spikes were protruding from her back and arms. She had also grown. She was now a full head taller than him. But the mutation was not complete, he grabbed her and carried her to the water's edge and laid her down. She stayed there floating with her hair all around her. Then, she started to lighten in color. She shrunk to her normal size and the spikes sunk back into her. When she was healed atom carried her to the outside. When he got outside of the cave, she woke up.
“what? What happened? I remember being grabbed by dark tendrils and I can't remember past that!”
Atom filled her in on the events. “oh, well um I guess that I better thank you.” she smiled and gave him a small kiss on the cheek. Atom blushed wildly.
“well um uh it was no problem, uh-”
“hey, don't let it get to your head. I was just thanking you.”
“oh, um yeah, right, uh your welcome.” he managed to say.
“oh and by the way,” She started “, I wanted to give this to you for your birthday but I never got the chance. Aira handed Atom a green elegant deku flute.
