THE WATCHERS

This one I wrote for a competition - it was a 1500 word limit. I'll let you know if I win!!!

(sf) The Watchers (G)

Demyx’s heart pounded as he ran, fear pulsing through him with every breath. He had lost track of how long the probes had been following him, but he could hear their violent whirring getting closer and closer every second. He had to lose them, and soon. A small wreckage from a crash days earlier cluttered the side of the highway on which he traveled, and he jumped into it headfirst. He held his breath as he waited for the probes to pass. He heard them on the other side of the twisted metal and ducked as their sensor lights scanned the area. He would be safe as long as they did not enter the wreckage. As advanced as they were, they couldn’t see through metal. Yet.

He breathed a sigh of relief as they moved on, but he knew they would be back. He shook his head. 2032 was supposed to be the ‘Year of Revolution’, but so far nothing had changed. It was only February, but Demyx knew that nothing would get any better. He tentatively climbed out of the wreckage and ran into the shadows. There was no sense in revealing himself to anyone else. The Watchers probably already knew that he had surfaced, and they would probably keep sending probes – or worse – until they captured him. Being an Australian in a world ruled by Americans was tough.

Those of his kind who had not pledged allegiance to the tyrannical Americans were killed, imprisoned or enslaved unless they could manage to escape. Entire countries had been wiped out in what America had called the ‘Scourge of the Unworthy’. Demyx had been in hiding ever since he was born. That was almost twenty-five years ago. It was an awful life. Forced to live in the most squalid of conditions, more of his kind died every day. There were only a few hundred of them left in Adelaide. These few, however, were the most deadly to The Watcher’s plans. Many of them had formed a rebellion against the Americans and The Watchers, and many other towns, states and countries throughout the world were following their lead.

Soon, however, they were going to strike back. They were going to destroy The Watchers, who had risen to power after America had won the war, once and for all. Demyx made his way underground through one of the many secret passages throughout the city and met up with his fellow rebels. One of them, his good friend, Shax, greeted him, “You were gone for a long time. We were beginning to worry.” “I was chased by one of The Watchers’ probes.” Demyx replied, “Were you followed?” Another, Abraxias, asked. Demyx shook his head, “How are our plans coming along?”

Those who had hid ‘underground’ had only the technology from before America took over. That was in 2010. America had basically built over much of the old cities and had, in effect, forced them ‘underground’. However, over the years the waste from the ‘City Above’ had accumulated in the underground, and the rebels had taken whatever they could and rebuilt and used things from the discards. Much of it was in perfect condition, but those above discarded them once something newer was made. It was disgusting the amount that was wasted these days.

From these wastes, the rebels had managed to put together a bomb which they had improved upon every time the parts became available. It was powerful enough to take out every single one of the ‘WatchTowers’ which had been built in every single town, giving The Watchers power. They foolishly built them so that each one was linked. All over the world, the towers were linked together by a central hub, which was conveniently located in Adelaide. If that was destroyed, the WatchTowers were destroyed with it, as were The Watchers, and the Americans would be literally powerless. Then the rebels could take the world back and they could start anew. That was the plan, and it was soon to come to fruition.

Demyx and the rebels were nervous. While the majority of them caused chaos in the city, a select group of them, including Demyx, would infiltrate the central hub and blow up the supercomputer within. It sounded cliché, but it was their last and only chance at freedom. They had contact with their kind all over the world, and had orchestrated a mass war against the Americans to keep them busy as well. Demyx was brought back to the task at hand by the sound of a voice coming from the iYak in his hand, “We’ve distracted the Topworlders!” Abraxias exclaimed, hurriedly, “Go now!”

The six of them who would infiltrate the hub sprung from their hiding places and ran towards the huge dome, keeping well away from any probes or patrols they could pick up on their radars. When they reached the dome, Shax began to search the outer walls for the spot which they had been over many times in their briefings, which was the part of the wall which would be destroyed in order to provide them with the quickest route to the supercomputer.

When they found it, one of the other rebels, Rik, cut a square about the size of a small door into it. He then placed a small round object into the cut and pressed a button on its surface. The object glowed white-hot and moved along the cut until it stopped, burning straight through it. The wall fell away and they tiptoed through it. They found themselves in a large circular hallway which was empty save for the security cameras. They hid in shadows, making sure that they weren’t seen. Another rebel, Garena, produced a small, pen-like object and held it towards the nearest camera. She pressed a button on it and a small blue flash escaped it. The camera blew up, and she repeated the process until all the cameras in the room were destroyed.

A Watcher ran into the hallway and surveyed the scene. Garena clicked the object and The Watcher was dead. This process was repeated in every room they entered until they came to the door to the supercomputer. There were two panels on either side of the door, for two pairs of eyes and two pairs of hands. This was the one part which none of them were looking forward to. There was an intercom near the door, which Demyx proceeded to use, “There has been a security breach! The supercomputer is in danger!” Instantly, there were two black-robed Watchers in the room. Upon seeing them, they produced laser guns, “Move and you die.” They growled in unison.

Rik fell to his knees, “I pledge allegiance to you.” He said, dropping the circular object from before on the floor beside him, “Get up, you little Japanese rat!” The Watchers snarled. He did as instructed and the object began moving along the floor, but neither Watcher noticed, “Each of you foreign pigs will be executed before your fellow rebels on national television, so that nobody else tries what you tried!” They declared, readying their guns. One Watcher, however, screamed out in pain as the object hit him, burning and killing him. Garena clicked her own object as the other Watcher was distracted and he was killed as well. Two other rebels, Vance and Erek, bent over the bodies and proceeded to extract the parts they needed to enter the room. It was a disgusting job, but it had to be done.

Once it was done, four of the rebels held the eyes and hands up to the required monitors. The door opened and they went inside. This room was, as they discovered, filled with thousands of probes. These ones, however, were equipped with lasers. Rik and Garena loosed their gadgets on the probes while the others ran towards the supercomputer, which was suspended in the centre of the room. Shax tied a thin rope around Demyx’s waist, “There is a small opening on the supercomputer for ventilation. You must throw the bomb into it in order to blow it up. The rope will retract after thirty seconds. That’s all the time you’ll have. Good luck.” The rope was tied around the balustrades and Demyx jumped. He threw the bomb into the hole just before the rope retracted, and they barely made it out of the dome before it exploded, plunging the Earth into powerlessness.

The Watchers were destroyed, and, without power or technology, America lost the war. Two years later, power had been restored to the Earth, and society was slowly rebuilt the way it was before America had taken over, albeit with the new technology. Life was good again. Everyone returned to their homes and lives, and there was no more discrimination. There was finally peace on Earth. A part of Demyx was actually glad for all that had happened. The people of Earth had learnt a valuable lesson. And they’d never forget it.
