Tatl's Story

This is a very, very short Majora's Mask Fan Fiction that basically only covers one scene, seen through the eyes of Tatl the fairy. Not great, I wrote it in five minutes.

Tael, stop it!

Prat. Why wouldn't he stop right away?

What, sis, are you scared? Scared of the big mask?

So I was a little apprehensive about Skull's new mask. Who wouldn't be? It was big, dark, and creepy. Just like the forest we were traveling in... I still shudder to think of it. And now I had Tael to be dealing with, as an added bonus.

So? I have good reason to be scared! If my master shows up all of a sudden with some--

You're being a baby! Just look at the damn thing, it's harmless!

I doubted that. Wouldn't be the first time Tael had gotten us into trouble. Sure, the mask looked like a harmless chunk of wood, with its pretty purple spirals and lavish red eyes, like pools of sunlight glistening in the dark. But beautiful as it was...I couldn't shake that feeling... A feeling of morbid evil...

We passed a large oak tree and, mere feet away, I could see a boy on his horse. Skull would do something to him, no doubt--Loot him, steal his things, search him for all he's worth. Recently, though, the tricks were becoming more than a joke. Almost menace.

Skull Kid's voice cut through my train of thought: "So, what should we do to him, guys? Chop off his head... Cut open his stomach, drain out his insides..." He gave a cruel bark of laughter, and once again I felt a jolt of foreboding.

Of course, Tael was laughing too. I stared hard at his glittering purple body and wondered why he had become this... Would I become that as well?

What about you, Tatl? Don't you think it's funny?

Tael again. I fought back the urge to charge him into a tree, and replied calmly:

Yes... hilarious... I forced out a false chuckle. But why don't we try something else? Decapitation is a little far for me to--

"Excuse me?"

Whoops. Had I gone too far?

"Excuse me?" repeated Skull Kid, and I felt every last inch of me tremble as his high-pitched, squealing voice rose to a dangerous level. "Are you saying what I think you're saying? Tael, are you... Scared?"

Well I--No, I'm--You need to understand--

"YOU COWARD!" he shouted. "YOU FILTHY, TRAITOROUS COWARD!"

He thrust a long hand over near the green-clad boy, and he flew ominously off the horse and onto the ground. I heard his scream of anger and hopeless agony as Skull Kid leapt onto the horse, closely followed by Tael, with him dragging in the dust. I saw his young, innocent body be morphed by some kind of hellish power into that of a plant...

And then, for the final time, Skull Kid's voice rang out in my head.

Go, Tatl! Turn your tail and run, like the coward you are! A cackling noise, and he was gone.

Left to dwell in my own despair, I watched carefully as the boy stood up. Barely half of his old stature, his short wooden legs were firmly implanted within a violently pink flower.

Suddenly, unwillingly, I floated over beside the boy's large round head.

Would you like some help?

He nodded. I used the last of my power to lift him up, out of the Deku flower, and onto the forest floor.

He reached out a hand, and I flew solemnly over to it, resting at last on its scratchy brown surface. All my years with Skull Kid, all his deceit, all of our adventures were swept away in that instant...

It was a match that was made in heaven.
