Magic the Gathering

I see Yu-Gi-Oh card game threads but I haven't seen any Magic the Gathering card game threads, does anyone here play or have played Magic the Gathering.

Yep. I had a very overtypical Elf Deck at one stage. Timberwatch Elf, Wellwisher, Priest of Titania, Heedless One, Fyndhorn Elves, Elfhame Palace, ect ect. I also had another Deck with damage shifting cards such as Glittering Lynx and Soldiers En-kor. Good times. How about you - Any memorable games, deck ideas you want to share?

I play!

My friends and I get together and play all the time. Zombie"ish" deck, Angel and Soldier Deck, and a Blue Morph Deck.

And I use to have Akroma Angel of Wrath! (why did I trade you, WHY?!?!?)

I pesonal liked to mix deck types like water and forest or Plains and swamp. I tried to get all the Golems and put them into one deck and also had lots of differnet types of drakes and made a drake deck (all flying pretty hard to beat). I remember playing against my brother and cousin when I was younger, they are the reasons why I started playing, but have since stop although I still have my cards and would like to start playing again. I thought that Magic was a better card game than Yu-Gi-Oh mostly because I required more strategy. My favorite card was the Knight of Dusk.

Good ol' Akroma. <3 And I like Knight of Dusk there, too. An ok ability for the mana cost. Is he from the Weatherlight set? Hmm - does anyone have any preferred sets? I originally fell in love with the core sets, for their sheer simplicity (the numbered editions), but later recognised that the Mirrodin set was probably the best of the modern game, at least in my opinion.

Admittedly I know little of Yu-Gi-Oh, although friends who played both games seemed to claim that Magic the Gathering was more varied, and provided far more versatility when constructing a Deck. Before I became too experienced with the game, I used to just favour colours and themes in decks, before I began to get into some real strategy - but the game could be fun at any level. I remember the great multiplayer games at my schools magic club. Awesome.

Since everyone is posting their favourite or much loved cards, this would have to be mine. Amazing for multiplayer battles, it could really change the game - and royally peeve an opponent. Nothing subtle about it, but it's cards like this that make me love the colour blue. (Btw, whats everyones favourite colour?) Anyway, here it is:



I also have a soft spot for cards like Glimpse the Unthinkable, Spelljack, Twincast, Deflection, Gifts Ungiven and everyone knows it - Counterspell.

I don't know what he's from, I traded for him back when I first stated playing. I don't have any prefered sets.

If anyone wants to look up cards, there is an entire database provided online by Wizards of the Coast, called Gatherer. You can search by colour, card type, set, and many other options.

I stopped playing Magic in 2002 or so. Everything got too expensive, and the guys with the best decks were the ones who could drop four hundred bucks on booster boxes as soon as a set came out. Three expansions a year, a new basic set with new rules every other year, it just got to be overwhelming. I still have my cards, though.

I started playing just after the boarder changes, so probably near the release of Eighth Edition, but I understand what you are saying. Everything seems to be moving faster than ever at the moment. I still play occassionally and might even purchase cards, but these days it's always singles and only in the interest of a new deck idea. You still own some - any memorable games, or deck ideas you want to share?



I recently perfected my old en-kor deck, that uses damage redirection and protection to mess with a strong opponent. Cards like the above can work very well with Stuffy Doll or Wall of Souls. Sometimes it's fun to test an interesting idea even if it isnt the most effective (because winning in the most annoying way possible is very satisfying when it occurs!).

What about you do you have any memorable duels with any of youy friends. As for me I just played against my brother and cousin because no one I knew played.

^Well, since you asked.

I remember creating multiplayer decks designed simply to annoy opponents, such as really focused mill decks (targeting one unhappy player), or absolutely protection focused, to make games last for hours. <3 But nothing seemed to annoy people more in a multiplayer game than my Blue/Red control/cheese. Sure, everyone would gang up on me when I used it, but not before I had countered lots of spells, reduced life totals, and stabbed 'allies' in the back.


Basically it was a bunch of Counterspells, Lightning bolts, Ball lightning, Unsummons and balanced cards like Invoke the Firemind. Cards like Stitch in Time and Spelljack also made it into the mix just for fun - it wasnt even a good deck, it was merely intended to do make things go bang and fizzle.

One of my friends had an awesome deck. I cant remember alot about it, except that it made use of a card that most people would consider useless, or relatively weak at first glance, called false memories. He had a foil verson of this card.

Ah, I remember the days of when I used to play this.

To quote a great former member: "I play with real cards, kiddies!"

I used to be obsessed with this game. I even went to tournaments and stuff. I still have several thousand cards that I have no idea how to get rid of.

Pay me 1,000 dollars and I will. Trust me, they're probably worth more (or maybe not).

Probably more around five hundred dollars. Depending on the rares/mythics.

Anybody playing type 2?

I played a little of it, but I prefer Legacy. Goblins are awesome.

I play Legacy too. Goblins are pretty fun. They have some new goblins in Zendikar.
