Re: Rap and Hip Hop

Rap and Hip-Hop is probably the two genres I listen to the most. Rap of modern time is ****, though. Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne, Birdman, etc. All those people who ruin rap. I miss when rap were emotional songs coming from the heart and mind, like Tupac who rapped about his appreciation of his mother, or Eminem who praised his daughter. Those kind of deep songs, that are long lost. Today its like "omg beyaatc* yo yo i got dat money yo u noe wut i mean yoyo i rich yeaa TURN MY SWAG ON". Please..

Anyway, enough ranting. I'll list my favorite artists too!

Eminem
Tupac
Snoop Dogg
Young Jeezy
Dr. Dre
Busta Rhymes
50 Cent
Ice cube

'Many Men' is the only reason I have him listed. If you know what his lyrics mean the song actually has a meaning except for *****es and cash.

Re: Rap and Hip Hop

I love rap and hip hop. But I pretty much listen to every genre.

My two favorites at the moment are T.I. and Lil Wayne.

Recently Forte got me into Lupe Fiasco. I have to say, he is very good. Thanks Forte <3

Then I have several other artists I like, but I don't feel like listing all of them.

Re: Rap and Hip Hop

Aesop Rock is amazing. His song Killswitch, that he did with DJ Krush (another favorite) is one of my favorite songs. Check it out. It's -far- from what mainstream MTV rap sounds like.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9ORLo7ntMY

This is another amazing song, featuring DJ Krush and The Roots. It's called Meiso. It has a sick beat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UR0AfZoWVFk

As far as popular genres go, I am a rock/metal person. But I also LOVE electronica and DJ's, **** like that, and rap can be a big part of those genres. Not to mention I just genuinely do like some rap and hip hop. Some artists I like...:

NWA
Wu Tang Clan
Method Man
Aesop Rock
Gangstarr (mostly for his song Moment of Truth)
Eminem
Tupac

Sure there's more but I can't think at the moment..

Call me tasteless but there's a special place in my heart for Korn covering rap songs... I forget the original artist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8e0ZkxPkBw There's a lot of rap in Korn's music to begin wit.

Nu-metal is inspired by hip hop anyway, you can hear a lot of it in nu-metal. Nu-metal gets a bad rap (omgomgzz see what I did there?!?!) but I like it. -shrugs-

Anyway, anything with a sick beat and sick lyrics and I'm down.

oh speaking of NWA

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tcvDsiNMmI0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tcvDsiNMmI0&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

That is worth the embed. It's hilarious, just watch it.

edit: Wtf? Someone explain to me the embed. In the meantime:

Re: Rap and Hip Hop

Rap as an lyrical form of art (theoretically) works. It's just poetry. Too bad 80% of all rappers choose non clever, generic, 'gangstuh ****' as a subject.

Looking at it as 'music' though, it's probably way down there at the totem pole. Anyone with Fruity Loops, 30 minutes of free time and the most basic form of rhythm can fix up a beat.

When a rapper uses actual instruments, paired with strong lyrics, I'll give it a shot. Rarely see such thing though.

Yeah? So, like, what have you listened to? Like, really listened to? I'm not talking some songs you may have heard on the radio. Just curious.

Well, when I was still living at home I heard quite a lot of hip-hop. My dad is really into that kinda thing. Mostly the older generation though; Wu Tang, NWA, Tupac, B.I.G etc. But also some of the new stuff like Eminem, 'Fiddy', Snoop (I'm counting him as new, because I hardly ever heard his older stuff), Chamilionaire (or w/e), Lil John,

The thing is, I just find it a shame that they take a powerful art form like the Spoken Word, and use it to talk about disrespecting women and shooting people. Not out of a moral standpoint, not at all in fact. It's just not very creative.

That said, I do like some rap songs, for no apparent reason.

Re: Rap and Hip Hop

deku guy maybe you should try listening to rap that isn't mainstream because generally a lot of the stuff that gets radio play (and is subsequently about such vulgar subjects) is going to be rather uninteresting drivel

going out on a limb and contradicting myself, i've been listening to asher roth's 2009 album quite a bit lately and it was me very intrigued, because his subject material is pretty interesting and his rhymes are witty and hilarious
