I've read the first book of the series, and I'm starting the second one.
Stephanie Meyers had a dream about a vampire and a human female laying in a field, and she thought it was so interesting, that she wrote it down, and added things until she couldn't stop - which is what the Twilight series is, in the end of all things. I don't think she was aiming to be as amazing as Stephen King, or Margaret Atwood, or whomever else, but she just wanted to write a story about characters that she fell in love with, and wanted to share them with others.
I think people are trying to compare her to a bar that she wasn't trying to reach for in the first place.

She was just a everyday lady, who had a thought she liked, and wrote about it; and then it got really famous and turned into a movie.
Anyways. With all that being said, I will have to say that the books can get pretty tedious. We get it that Belle can't breath whenever Edward comes really close to her, and we also get the idea that Edward is as perfectly good looking as a greek god, but yeah. Kept me reading on, so that's a good thing.
EDIT: Oh, this is about the movie! Durrrr.
Well, I liked the movie. I'm a sucker for cheesy, cliche-like, romance flicks. They get me every time.
